Couldn't you use a throwing knife so you would only have to worry about movement speed?

11 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 2 of those were killed.

 9 souls destroyed the Mastermind...
7 killed the bitch and survived.
2 showed that it can outsmart Hell itself.

I've been aiming to increase to the Hell Knight XP rank, so I needed some pistol kills. Knowing me, I would never use a pistol unless I went AoMr, so that's what I did. I also needed another silver for 1st Lieutenant skill rank, so I needed a 100% on HMP.

I decided to go Sharpshooter, just because it's my favorite pistol master and easy access to WK is nice (especially to augment Ss' early weakness). I was really concerned about Cybie, because I've never done Sharpshooter outside Ao100 before. That's why I put the early point in Hellrunner. I don't regret it. I think it was a wise choice. Things were going okay, then...

I found a GCB. o_O Let me tell you. GCB + Sharpshooter is.. it's insanely easy. It's complete insta-win mode. I also found a pair of phase-shift boots which I a-modded and then a Necroarmor. My move speed was ridiculously fast without even trying.

The mastermind's AI has changed drastically in the latest version. Corner shooting is easy now, unlike in 0.9.9.6. A gatling gun will work fine. I'd use your rockets up first, though.

I don't understand chain firing at all.

It's only good against a single opponent if you expect to kill it in 4 or more volleys. And I've never even been in a situation before where using the 'sweeping' functionality was a good idea. I don't even know how it works. It seems like you'd have to expose yourself way too much to use it.

Whoah. How do you beat the Unholy Cathedral with a build like that? And you're not carrying a melee weapon. Did you bring along the chainsaw and then ditch it afterward?

Isn't it difficult not to blow up the pillar with the BFG? It only has such a middling range...

Also, carrying enough plasma ammunition to do this, if your build isn't plasma friendly, seems a tad crippling. But I guess it could be worth it.

Surely there must be a safe way to get the demons' attention from a distance. A rocket, maybe?

I, too, got my butt handed to me by the Shambler duo. Next playthrough I went AoB and completely annihilated them both with a vampyre build in about 5 turns.

I'm sort of disappointed by the huge disconnect between melee and ranged in this fight.

NetHack was my first roguelike. I spent years becoming good at that game. I like it, but I've forgotten enough more about that game than there is to learn about most roguelikes and I can still win.

I'm also quite fond of Crawl and ToME 4.

I can safely say none of them I like as much as DoomRL, though. Some come sort of close, but DoomRL has an indescribable charm that meshes very well with my personality.

BTW, when clearing CoS with the double shotty and you are in the phase when you mostly meet single lost souls, you can use the alternate fire (single shell) to dispatch souls in short range to save ammo/be ready to kill another one without needing to reload.

Wow.. been playing this game for longer than a year and never knew you could do that.

I haven't actually played City of Skulls since the new lost soul AI. Does it change the difficulty or tactics much?

Check out this thread. Hopefully that's the solution you need.

They go down to shotguns like a hot knife through butter. I'm pretty sure they're weak to sharpnel damage. Not to mention that you can get most of them in your cone of fire. (By the way, they're resistant to bullet and fire damage.)

By the way, the City of Skulls is a pretty extreme challenge. You don't have to do it (and probably shouldn't) without at least shottyman and/or a tactical shotgun. Without a shotgun build I'd feel much safer with a super shotgun. Or, you know, a melee build. Or like, a nuclear plasma rifle..
