... or maybe not. This "run" took me a bit over a month, and finally, it is done.
Well, this is it. The secondmost-grindy challenge possible in DoomRL is done, and I'm not certain whether the most grindy challenge, Nightmare AAo666 YAAM, is humanly possible at all, mostly given the no-save restriction.
I played this run for slightly over a month, a few levels here and there. Hence the number of saves and the play time (at least once I fell asleep with this game running).
I _love_ the Sharpshooter build. Once it gets rollling, it can produce one of the highest DPS possible in the game. I believe that out of those 56565 kills (nicely shaped number :) ), only a few hundreds or so were non-pistol kills.
I learned my lesson from my previous Ao100 YAAM Sharpshooter run, when I nearly ran out of pistol ammo. This time, I used a heavily modded P3B2 blaster, first in combination with the GCB, and later with what I personally call White Death (in memory of Simo Häyhä, one of the best WW2 snipers) - a P3B2-modded combat pistol. As a tertiary weapon I assembled the Mother-In-Law, for times, when corpse disposal was a really high priority.
This run was made much easier for me when I completed the Inquisitor's Set at levels 56 and 67. A complete immunity to fire allowed me to laugh into VMR packs' faces, and considerably improved my maneuverability, treating lava as solid ground. After finding the Set, I was pretty much indestructible, and I supported it with Iro5 taken as my last five traits. In this situation, I could have been only killed by doing something _very, very stupid_ (doing something normally stupid was fine :) ), or by a really, really bad starting position, like starting in the middle of nightmare demons or arachs caves.
That being said, those nightmare demons and arachs caves were pretty much the only challenging levels. A nightmare demon cave felt like an advancing wall of doom, kept at bay only by knockback, and sometimes, even that wasn't enough. Nightmare arachs then could inflict pretty high damage at the start of a level.
On the other hand, there were levels where I spawned with a Cyberdemon right in the line of fire. The feeling of a Cybie kill before he even has a chance to move or retaliate is simply priceless.
In this run, I also had a sidequest besides simply completing the challenge, and that was finishing the last three master assemblies for Technician Diamond.
I failed.
Seriously, in a run like this you'll find all the uniques, all the extras and so many mods that you could get Tech Diamond even if you started from nothing (barring unequippable armors, that is) - but all of this is worth nothing when you don't find the items to slap the mods on. Out of the three assemblies needed, the cybernano armor was no problem (I actually finished the assembly right after clearing floor 666 before leaving), but the other two, the biggest fucking gun and the ripper? I only found one BFG9000 on level _550_. And I was even less lucky with chainsaw - I found only one during the whole run at level 240-something, only to see it destroyed by a stray mancubus rocket. Ah well - can't have everything, and at least the components for the ripper are easy to find in normal games.
That being said - I had to rely on GCB until level 282, when I finally found a combat pistol and turned it into White Death, finally peaking my damage output. This weapon is simply a beast.
As I slowly advanced deeper and deeper, the amount of monsters per levels went to staggering amounts. In the end, 100+ monsters generated on a single level became a more and more common sight, happening more often than not in the last hundred-or-somesuch levels. The most monsters generated on a single level was _160_, in a "Hellish magic fills the air!" level (an archvile+formers complex, with about 1/4 of the monsters being viles).
But the most-kills levels were the pain elemental and agony elemental caves. I encountered five of these, with 398, 505, 707, 534 and 506 killstreaks respectively. Two of those particularly stand out: The level 529 agony elemental cave, where, after clearing the initial on-screen wave of enemies I opted for conserving ammo, leaving my blaster to recharge whenever possible, thus allowing the elementals to breed a bit, leaving me with a killstreak of 707 - my best DoomRL killstreak ever. The other one was the last pain elemental cave, encountered at level 640-something, when I ran to the left in a lava river (again, the Inquisitor's Set was a huge boon here), allowing me to simply wait for the elementals and lost souls to come to me for their deaths and leaving my blaster to recharge inbetween. I racked up a killstreak of 506 without spending a single bullet.
Some more interesting numbers come up when I compare this single run to the rest of my whole previous DoomRL 0,997 career (which took me to Archvile Br. General rank, no less):
Well, that's it. It was grind like no other, and with no rewards other than a good feeling. But at least, the Infernal Sharpshooter is finally done.
PS: I noticed that a killstreak is broken when you are hit - even if you completely resist the hit and take no damage (for example, you're hit by a revenant rocket while wearing the Inquisitor Set, taking zero damage). Is this intentional? I'm not calling it a bug, just pointing out the behavior.

- This game took me three days and fourteen hours. The whole of my previous career took four days and six hours.
- Prior to this game, I racked up a total of 28589 kills. This game netted 56565 - I was only a few hundred kills shy of doubling my previous career killcount.
- In fact, checking the rank requirements, this single run would carry me from Human rank all way to Cyberdemon (provided I could throw in some melee kills as well).
- The difference is even more notable when considering Cybies. I've had 18 Cybies on my deathlist before this game - and 152 in this game. My Cybie kill list grew to almost ten times the original size. I didn't encounter any Cybie complex in this run, but at least once I encountered three Cybies on a single level. Of course, with the Inquisitor's Set, I could not only laugh them off - I could even use them to wipe the floor of unwanted corpses :).
- An even more massive increase of a deathlist came for nightmare archviles. Out of 504 total kills I have now, 492 were scored in this run.
- The 50000th kill was a former captain (on level 609), and the 55555th kill was a baron of hell (on level 658) - these two were the most-encountered enemies in this run.
- Last but not least, the score in this run was 37122516 points. Compared to my second-highest score of 2353162 (UV Ao100 YAAM, Sharpshooter of course :) ), it's almost 16 times higher. Compared to my best non-Ao100/AAo666 game, the score is 103 times higher (a UV AoMr YAAM run, Sharpshooter again, scoring 358528 points). Quite an increase.
Well, that's it. It was grind like no other, and with no rewards other than a good feeling. But at least, the Infernal Sharpshooter is finally done.

PS: I noticed that a killstreak is broken when you are hit - even if you completely resist the hit and take no damage (for example, you're hit by a revenant rocket while wearing the Inquisitor Set, taking zero damage). Is this intentional? I'm not calling it a bug, just pointing out the behavior.

Bug Reports / [0.9.9.7G] Berserk effect speed bonus is applied after firing speed cap

I played a Sharpshooter build and when I reached SoG5, my firing speed was capped at 0.10s per shot. When I grabbed a berserk pack afterwards, my @ screen told me my firing speed was 0.07s per shot, which would suggest that the berserk effect is applied after the 0.10s cap.
As all actions take some multiple of 0.10s and alternate if the action time is between those multiples, this would mean that every third shot took _no time at all_. I did not check turns passed between actions, sorry.
I do not know whether this is a bug or intentional, but IMHO it was worth reporting here. It happened several times in my game, so it should be easy to reproduce.

Century Lounge / [U|Ao100|YAAM] Centurial Platinum Asskicking Sharpshooter - and almost not ...

Man, that was a drag.
I'm quite a defender of Sharpshooters here in the forums, acknowledging their tougher start but also their incredible offensive power once MSs kicks in. And so it was in my case as well.
I've had quite a lucky start, as in the early levels I could always find a sweet spot and let enemies simply come for their deaths. I only faced a few Barons and once MSs kicked in, everything except Viles was going down in a single clip. I assembled a high power pistol to kill the smaller ones quicker. Little did I know that this weapon will stay with me well until the seventies, and even afterwards I was using a P3B2 normal pistol. Too bad that I didn't find a single combat pistol to unleash the full bulletstorm.
The Anti-Freak Jackal was a godsend - it granted me all I ever needed in corpse-disposal department, making Viles much easier to deal with.
Single-enemy-type levels were fun. Viles with nothing to revive? Easy. Mancubi? Too slow to fire even once. Nightmare demons? An advancing wall of doom kept at bay by AFJ and its knockback.
Thanks to Int2, I didn't need too much in movespeed department, so I was wearing cerberus boots ever since I could assemble them. To my surprise, cerberus armor and boots have a fixed movespeed penalty, no matter from what item they were assembled. However those two or three lava run levels were ridiculous with those boots.
However, cerberus armor _does_ keep original resists, making cerberus ballistic vest one of the best assemblies in the game (70% fire and plasma resist, 50% resist everything else). Sadly I didn't find a second onyx pack, and the nano pack was found on the very last level. Still, I was able to tank two Cybies at once anyway.
The VBFG9000 was not used a single time - but it was my last advanced assembly to create for Technician Platinum. With four master assemblies out of the way and three to go, I'm closing in on my second diamond here.
The nastiest moment arrived on level 97, which I cleared - only to find myself with twenty four bullets in my three guns and not a single bullet to reload. With only three floors to go, I picked up a combat knife to fall back on. I thought about just making a break for the stairs if need be - my defenses and medpacks would likely carry me through. So I braced myself and entered level 98 ...
... to find three captains right in my iron sights.
Pop. Pop. Pop ...
And suddenly I had over 400 bullets, and I was back on track again. The sigh of relief must've been heard in miles around.
With that, I cleared 98 and 99, won the "Suddenly monsters come from everywhere!" challenge on level 100 (including my last Cybie) and won. All of this was not enough to grant me Experience Cross - guess I'll have to make a YAAM Ao666 for that :).
Well. With this challenge completed, I guess it's time to work on the Strongman badges a bit - for Archvile rank, I only need a few hundred melee kills. But first, I'll have a beer for a little celebration :).

Now there's something I've been trying to find for quite some time - a calculator to which you can input a dice notation and the calculator will display the chance of the roll being higher or lower than a certain result.
For example, what's the chance of killing a demon with one BFG shot?
Now we know that a BFG is 10d6 damage, demon has 2 armor and 25 HP, so what's the probability of 10d6 >= 27?
I found the calculator here at anydice.com. I thought about sharing this with the rest of us here.
By the way, the probability of the example is over 94% :).

- The next word or phrase must begin with the letter, that the previous one ended with.
- The word or phrase must be directly related to DoomRL, Doom or Doom 2, or officially released DoomRL (_not_ Doom) mods. 0.998-exclusive words are not allowed until it's officially released (although it's not in beta-testing yet - but who knows what may come in near future :)). Also DoomRL Extreme Arena-exclusive words are not allowed since this game is available to supporters only.
- More words in a phrase entered are allowed only if they are directly stated in any of the games. Guys,
I just recently lost all my progress in DoomRL and I have to restart again, on a laptop with no numeric or external keyboard. The standard Home-End-PgUp-PgDn is not available to me due to my keyboard layout.
In ToME I used the following four keys for diagonal movement - [ - as NW, ] as NE, ' as SW and \ as SE. (yes, I know the layout is strange). Could someone please point me to the proper keybindings here, what to put into keybindings.lua? Or if someone has a completely different experience here, could you give me a hint?

As I needed one more Gold and one more Platinum for Lt. Colonel, a quick look at the requirements told me I need a game like this to grab both at once.
I recently grew very fond of Sharpshooter - once they get rolling, they are nearly unstoppable. Sure enough, I died quite a number of times, be it from carelessness, exploring too quickly, miistyping, or just the RNG putting me in inescapable starting location. This run, however, RNG was standing well behind my back - no bad startups, plenty of both ammo and mods.
As I learned quickly that too wild exploring led to YASDs, I adopted a completely different approach - I just set my Wait parameter to 2000 and let those bastards come to me. This worked pretty well - weaker creatures died before having a chance to strike, stronger ones, like Knights and later Barons then required some careful positioning, before they fell as well. Later, as I was growing in speed, more activity became an option, since I could outrun and outshoot everything.
I didn't want to risk losing YAAM in Vaults, so I skipped Arena - I had the Gold from there from previous runs anyway.
CC was a breeze - two zerks for the right part, camp until everything else came for their deaths, two zerks for the Barons to the left and the last few buggers in the center, and one more to leave with 100% health. Easy as pie.
Military Base then was an absolute campingfest - I must have killed like 40 formers before moving from the starting spot. The elites are an insane XP gift, so Sharpshooter arrived right there.
With tactical armour and boots I was able to outrun the initial ambush at the Anomaly - but later I received some hits. Too bad - with some luck I could have ended this run with GK Diamond, but whatever.
Deimos Lab was another of those campfests. I simply waited for the initial wave of captions, commandos and cacos to come for me, before finally going in. That left mw only with a few revenants to deal with. Two Shamblers were quite powerful together, but I managed to separate them and kill one without the other interfering. This netted me the mods needed for antigrav boots, and at that point I was already faster than anything the game could throw at me at this point.
Halls of Carnage? Holy crap, the flood is really fast there on UV - with all my speeds I finished the level with lava only four or five tiles away from the stairs. I colud just wait till it floods the whole floor, as there are no fliers there, but instead I just killed them all. Also, this yielded mods to create something more powerful than the starting T-modded pistol. I kept the original though, and used it on weaker enemies, saving plasma for the stronger ones.
The rest of the run was easy and smooth. With movespeed 0.21s, firing speed 0.10s on both pistols and guaranteed knockback I could simply outrun and outshoot everything, never alowwing any monster to at all in my LOS - I simply knocked them out of it. Nuke plus lava element picked at Mt. Erebus allowed me to go for a full win. Strangely, JC didn't summon any single minion - not that they would be any threat anyway. And so I ended with two Platinums instead of just one.
Well, now, knowing something more about UV, I'll probably go for UV Ao100 to do some Archvile-hunting :).

Well, I wanted to see the Angelic requirements, and I thought Longinus the easiest one. And I was correct, as it took me only four or five attempts before things clicked into place.
My strategy was easy - pick up a Scout and simply outrun AoD. With Fin2/HR2 I had 0.64s both attack and movespeed. A lucky invulnerability on Hell 1 spawned close to me, allowing me to level up to 3 in perfect safety. Some of the invuln lasted even into the UC for the initial wave of lost souls. The demons? I simply led them into a lava bath effortlessly, granting me level 4. I had everything I needed.
Then, I just escaped from the AoD, and when he didn't move and was two squares away from me, I waited. This brought him into my melee range, but giving me a free attack without him having a chance to retaliate. Rinse and repeat until he's dead. He did not attack me at all.
The next level got me killed, but I didn't mind at all.

I'm starting to get along with MSs pretty well, so I tried to see how it works on Ao100. The results were plain awesome.I went with the philosophy that speed is the key, and this was achieved pretty easily. Upon getting MSs, my T-modded plain pistol was firing at 0.32s speed for 11 damage per shot - good enough at that point of the game. Then I went for WK for assamblies, Int2 to even improve my positioning, and HR2 and DM for even more speed. At that time, along with lucky finds of the Boots of the Crawling Chaos and a fireproof phaseshift armor pushed movespeed to 0.31s. Upon assembling cerberus boots (and later replacing those with Enviroboots) and using them as a switch, acid and lava were no threat at all.
Later, after reaching Rel3 and SoG5, the speeds were 0.23s movement, 0.1s fire and 0.48s reload. I was faster than anything the game could throw at me, and most of the monsters did not even get to act once before falling.
By the way - fireproof phaseshift armor is quite awesome. With my movespeed, it pretty much negated revenants' attacks - I got hit by the rocket, and got knocked back before damage was calculated, which effectively granted me Fireangel as long as I was moving. Too bad I lost this armor due to carelessness and three barons hitting at once ...
While my both active and passive defenses were about as good as one can get, offensive was quite a different matter. I didn't find _any single_ exotic/unique pistol for freaking 92 levels! No GCB, no blaster, no nothing. In fact, the high power pistol (2d6) [4/4] in my inventory took me pretty much through the whole game! Reloading after each four shots is not funny for too long, but I still was able to kill Viles before they could land their attacks, and even those two Cybies (at level 86 and 89) could only fire three rockets before dying.
I know that I could have at least assembled a storm bolter, but due to reliable knockback I was afraid of wasting too much ammo. In the end, this turned out to be a non-issue, as I was finding ammochains left and right throughout the whole game.
Then at last on level 93 I found a combat pistol and high-powered and P-modded it to (3d6) [10/10]. If you think MSs is effective, then think about MSs, SoG5 and this beast. If I consider the knockback issues for semi- and automatic modes, I believe that even GCB falls short here. Cacos? Two shots. Barons and Viles? Four. Bruisers? Five. Shamblers? Six. Cybie? If he fired his rocket and I dodged it, he wouldn't get time to fire another one, even if I had to reload once. Even N! viles had no chance to unload their attacks.
Really, the only sad thing is that I didn't get this beast earlier ...
Well, so, there. Next I might try to grab a similar win on UV :).

Since a lot of times messages tend to repeat, I would ask whether it would be possible to display repeated messages in a way like this (imagine the player firing an eight-round burst from the minigun on Cybie):

This was basically a standard AoMC/UV run for all purposes. Cateye, nuclear plasma rifle with a high power plasma rifle as backup - nothing could survive a single burst.
I tried to phase at the Anomaly upon the first enemy wave, but only moved two squares - no GK Diamond for me, especially sad when Cybie never touched me.
Anyway, after Cybie I saw two invulns just near the UC stairs. I pondered a bit, found a knife on the floor, T-modded it for quicker slashes, and went in.
The invulns sent me flying through the lost souls and almost through the demons as well. Now, I had to spoiled myself with AoD"s stats. 10 armor = 1HP per hit. Not good. But I figured out that I was faster both at movement (0.64s) and attack speed (0.51s), compared to AoD's 0.66s.
So I pillar-danced AoD over and over again. When he didn't have energy to move to me and he had two squares to get into melee range, I waited for him, sneaked a jab in and moved away before he could retaliate. Rinse and repeat for about 20 minutes realtime, and AoD suffered literally Death of a Thousand Cuts, leaving me his Scythe for the first time in my life.
After that I left out The Mortuary (I didn't believeto have enough firepower) and Lava Pits (no envirosuits throughout the entire game). In the end, Spidey never fired a single shot at me.

Is it just me, or was shotgun knockback heavily reduced? I played (and won :) ) my first ITYTD game in 0.996 and knockback did not work half as reliably. Quite a hit for any cornershooting tactics, if you ask me ...

Recently I was fairly successful with Cateye builds, so I decided do give the Ao100 a shot. In 0.994 I once made it to 94 before finally running out of resources, so this time I decided to be prepared more carefully.
I was absolutely abusing cornershooting all the time, first with the elephant gun, then with the assault shotgun, which I modded heavily and then, on switch for high distance fights, the laser rifle.
Malek's armour was again gift of the gods.
When I assembled the cerberus boots, I gained another huge tactical advantage against the monsters, since terrain was no longer a concern. One of the best assemblies, especially for the late parts of Ao100.
By that time, the monsters could never ever hit me, unless I spawned next to them at a level start. I continued to work on my offensive speed, netting me 0,49s per move and 0,40s per shotgun blast.
The only thing I was concerned about throughout the later parts was ammo. Somehow I never directly ran out, but a time came when I had something like 100 ammo in total for both my guns. Going this well and running out of ammo would probably end in a YARQ (Yet Another Rage-Quit)
Well, I ended this game slightly after 5AM, after eight hours of straight, if careful play. You can imagine how I woke up to work after less than two hours sleep :).

Level 84? What am I missing? Or should I not ask at all?
EDIT: Oh. 8 levels Phobos + 8 levels Deimos + 84 levels Hell = 100 levels of Ao100. I guess I really need some sleep :).

Knowing from my previous AoMC/UV win, I realised that Gatekeeper Diamond could be the easiest for me to achieve. And so it was!
I went for the same build and hoped to get a lucky phase on the Anomaly. So I phased the moment the walls opened, landing in the room to the right of the spawning point. With Cateye, all those monsters never got a shot at me, including the bruisers.
At the Tower of Babel I already had Dodgemaster, which makes Cybie a pushover. Then it was simply about not standing too close to the walls.
Right on the next level I immediately got ambushed from two sides by archies, mancubi and revenants, which quickly ended with me drowning in lava and being listed as a stupid suicide. Too bad - I believe I wasn't doing too many mistakes, so the Untouchable Medal (and thus Destroyer Platinum) was within my reach this game. One can't have everything at once, I guess.
PS: And a protip: Don't only check your firing time, but your reload time as well. A previous attempt at GK Diamond ended when I foolishly decided to reload my plasma rifle in Cybie's sight. Rocket to the face. So instead, have a backup weapon ready.
