Discussion / Re: Quick questions thread!
« on: May 15, 2013, 11:55 »
I've got a question on assemblies. I've decided to try a Sharpshooter technician, made a storm bolter and encountered a strange thing:

The wiki explicitly states:

Quote
Comments/special:    Storm bolters cannot receive additional mods, even with WK2.

Nevertheless, I checked it with a bulk mod and, to my surprise, it was successfully installed on the bolter.

What is it? Was the bolter changed in the latest version, is it a bug or the page at the wiki is outdated?

Discussion / Re: A bad day for Doom...

Some meson fluctuations maybe... or just too hot for anything? (+34 C)
8 dies in a row - I try to beat AoB on HMP...

It's the sun, we've already got four insane solar flares within two days, and scientists say even more are on the way.

God, I am always surprised by the huge number of poor doomguys who never make it. Usually five deaths in a row make me ragequit the game for a day :)

Discussion / Re: A short review on DoomRL
« on: May 11, 2013, 00:42 »
The review looks pretty well written, and attractive as well. I was lured to DoomRL by a small paragraph of text with the general idea like "Doom Roguelike - you will laugh but this thing actually exists, and it is worth trying!", and, I believe, your review has a much more comprehensive approach to the game.

Actually, I was thinking that the Staff would not remain after reviving you and hence could not be used as the lockpick for the Vaults (if you weren't there yet).  I also wanted to force a decision to be made at the vaults themselves: do I spend the Staff to crack the Vaults, or do I keep it and save the "Get out of Jail Free" card for later?

That's why I tied this effect to the Arena Master's Staff - there's only *one*.

Yes, this idea seems to be more balanced than my suggestion.

On the contrary, some of the most known roguelikes have Amulets of Life Saving (ADOM, NetHack) or something similar (e.g. Blood of Life in ToME), which basically give you an extra life. Even further, these are normal, non-unique items (although extremely rare), and in theory you can have an infinite number of them. ADOM's wishes are a reliable way to receive those.

Yes, this is yet another side of this question. Here we come up to the point of deciding whether we need an Item of Life here in DoomRL or not.

These items, I believe, will not just lay on the ground like ammo clips. :)

Personally I think it might be handy (homing phase devices, to some extent, belong to the category of life-saving items), however, obtaining such an item here must either be very difficult through special levels, or extremely unlikely as a random item spawn, like the homing phases. I don't think that the Arena Master's Staff which is discussed within this topic can potentially fulfill such a role. It will definitely require more balancing, like making the Chained Court tougher, or creating a completely new item used for such purpose in another special level.

I speak, of course, as a not-so-perfect player who already has enough issues and stupid deaths playing HNTR.

Another random thought about what the Arena Master's Staff could do:

If you are carrying it in your inventory when you die, it does 4d2 points of damage (not sure what type) to every enemy in sight.  You then gain half that much HP and are invulnerable for a few turns (3-5?).  The staff is then removed from your inventory.

Imagine:
"You Die!  Suddenly, the Arena Master's Staff glows a hideous crimson and hellish necrotic energies bring you back from the dead!"

...somewhat of a cross between an Amulet of Life Saving (ADOM/Nethack) and the Hell Mask from _Splatterhouse_.

This idea is interesting. It could also work as a single charge for the staff - after you die, the charge is gone, but you arise and the staff remains only to act as a lockpick for the Vaults with its lousy fire attack.

Another problem here is that such a change does break the idea of a roguelike, where you  usually get no second/third/fourth/whatever chance for a given character.

By the way, isn't gambling a part of any decent roguelike run? ^^

This sounds potentially like a computer specs problem. Can you post your hardware information, like processor, video card, RAM, etc?

Here it goes:

Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5000; 2,61 GHz
Video card: Sapphire Radeon HD 6700; installed latest drivers today
RAM: 4 GB installed, 3 Gb working due to WinXP
OS: Windows XP SP 2

The PC can be the reason, as I have been working under this very OS for a real while and the whole system may be just going nuts.

EDIT: So far special levels cause most problems, namely in locations where there is a lot of blood-stained tiles.

I have this weird lagging effect from time to time. Usually it is tolerable, but everything is really bad at Hell's Arena. The music is playing but the game freezes for several seconds and then quickly does everything according to the buttons you can press while it is frozen. The lagging is very annoying with fullscreen mode, setting the game to windowed mode makes things a bit easier.

Discussion / Re: scavenger nearly worthless?

I think it is a matter of luck, or a matter of RNG blessing (which are pretty much the same). You either get enough useless exotic/unique weapons, or you regret all those wasted traits.

A really nasty habit is to run around holding the key. Several YASDs, fortunately, help to cure that.
From my personal experience: I stopped doing that after my character drowned in lava in the Chained Court after the level was cleared.

I entered Hell's Armory with a red armor and the Grammaton Cleric Beretta which was useless for my build turned into an Onyx Pack. A fair trade, I used this hard-modded armor throughout the whole game and got a full win, and a great deal of success came thanks to this trait.

In the new version I went through my usual chaingun + 3A and instead of 'assault rifle' it now says 'assault chaingun'. Is this schematic now available to other weapons as well?

I'd go in a berserk rage and throw the BFG at his corpse :)

Nice work on pulling off a Full Win, and a very ambitious and complete win at that! I'm guessing the only bonus level left uncrushed was the Unholy Cathedral. At any rate, congrats.
No Plate Armor? You must've had WK2 by that point, so you could have been trundling around with ridiculous 10-point undamageable armor and laughing at just about any threat.

I was thinking about the Plate Armor, but the speed penalty seemed too harsh and I decided to use the one I made.

I'm guessing the only bonus level left uncrushed was the Unholy Cathedral. At any rate, congrats.

Yes, my character was with loads of guns/BFGs and the Cathedral was missed out due to that. I could give this place a try if I had the chainsaw (which I dropped after the Chained Court). Hmmm, that's a good idea for my next run.

The mortem says "He killed 849 out of 851 hellspawn.", so I guess you must have missed some other bastard on the way. Still, very nice run. GJ!

It is very strange, as I clearly remember that all previous levels were completely cleaned. I thoroughly hunted down any single monster to get as much experience as possible. How could that happen apart from the last surviving Caco?
