Discussion / Re: Quick questions thread!

Does
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
count as knife? I know it sounds stupid, but I don't want to spoil a medal.
edit: Looks like it does not, as I didn't get my Strongman Gold, not even Silver :((( And I never held anything but a knife, except for breaking a wall in The Vaults.
Or was it because some enemies died from a friendly fire/barrels/lava?
'Knife' means the weapon 'combat knife' and its assemblies. Other blades don't count.

Also, I'm pretty sure (though not 100% sure) that the game just checks what weapon you're holding when an enemy dies and attributes the kill to that.

Well...you make it sound easy :) Im nowhere near the level of play you demonstrate, so I cant offer insight on overpowerdness (is that even a real word or am I just making it up? :D) of ArchLT. That speed boost looks REALLY helpful, but dunno if the limited inventory cancels it out. I guess players with lower skill (like me) cant do ArchLT on N! either way and those with higher skill dont care about 2 slot inventory.

Anyway congratz on another angelic :-)
You don't need to be able to finish it on N! to see the problem; even comparing HNTR/HMP/UV Arch/AoLT to the vanilla game at that difficulty should make it fairly clear.

With regards to vanilla AoLT, removing the shell box and ammo chain from the starting equipment would go a long way towards increasing the difficulty (you would at least be reliant on a non-Brute trait to make it to the Chained Court before horribly breaking the game, rather than building melee before you've even got the chainsaw because the first five levels easy enough as is).

With regards to ArchAoLT, I really have no idea what you can do to fix it, but removing the speed boost doesn't sound particularly terrible. I'm pretty sure that ArchAoLT is the only Archangel which actually compensates you more than the corresponding Angel challenge, so it'd make sense to at least scale it back.

Nightmare! / Re: [N!|AoMr+AoD|92%|YAFW] Marksman Angelic
« on: August 04, 2013, 19:51 »
Awesome work, I'm still working towards N! AoD myself, but from reading this, I get the impression that Marksman Angelic really isn't much of a step-up from there.

Definitely agree about receiving too much experience, getting a master trait at dlvl 4 seems a little ridiculous. I would imagine AoD could probably do without the experience gain (also, given that Nightmare! already respawns corpses, double experience gain for no map memory and limited LOS seems a little extreme).

Nightmare! / [N!|AoB|28%|YAVP]
« on: August 01, 2013, 06:57 »
I... I really don't care to admit how many attempts this took me.

There's really nothing to say about melee stairdiving, I wouldn't bother posting this mortem at all, except it's got ego-boosting value as the first Nightmare! win I'm willing to accept as a 'legitimate' win (though it's still a pretty cheesy strat).

Oh, actually, one thing I found out: Int1 is kinda OP once you make it to Hell on Nightmare!; as a scout, one invuln plus stairsense is going to get you a long way, and in my experience, you're practically guaranteed to get at least two of those spawn in Hell. It'd take some seriously bad luck not to spend the entire last third of the game sprinting from stairway to stairway whilst invulnerable.

Discussion / Re: Umm, so...
« on: July 28, 2013, 22:30 »
...I kind of suck at this game. I've managed to meet Sergeant Major/Mancubus rank by presumably blind luck. The only 2 games I've managed to "finish" have been melee-based builds (One of them a Vampyre); I have had 0 luck on a ranged (i.e. pistol/shotgun) build. I've also delved into the recently-unlocked UV and N! modes, but have had absolutely no luck in even getting through even the Phobos 1 level (I know, pathetic!)  In any event, I've been browsing online, and have seen that what few UV builds I've studied start with
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
And I'm just wondering: Is this the kosher way of getting ahead in this game?
If you've finished a game, you probably don't suck; you may not be good, but you're certainly climbing a lot faster than you think. The game is relatively difficult, and will punish bad play quite brutally (as an aside, this took me a while to realise, but the vanilla game almost never kills you through bad luck, assuming you're going for a non-achievement win). I used to assume I suck, but I soon noticed that forum posts often featured more experienced players than myself struggling with similar issues to mine.

As for base entry, it's actually one of the harder levels in the game until you figure out a few tactics to take it relatively safely; particularly nasty is when base entry rolls the map with lots of trees and less cover than normal.

You should stick with the easiest difficulties as first. It took me a long time to get the hang of HNTR, much less UV. And I've yet to beat the game on n!...

I'd recommend focusing on getting most of the bronze/silver badges. You'll be steadily getting better and before you know it, you'll take up your first diamond.
Disagree with the first part; I've only ever played HNTR once, and it was for a speedrunner badge. I feel playing exclusively harder difficulties progressed my skills quicker in the early days of playing than HNTR would have (though I have yet to beat N! outside of a lucky AoOC run)

Definitely agree with the second part; I've always stepped my goals up in baby steps, first the easy bronze badges, then silvers and winning a game, then a few challenges, etc..

51
Definitely supporting.

Could possibly also serve to remind players that master traits block each other? I got caught out on that once, it was most disappointing.

52
The only reason I'm even mentioning this here is because it's rather silly for this assembly to throw out the bulk mod you used on it.

Because you could've just used the bulk mod to make that red armor last twice as long. Which seems more worthwhile unless I for some reason have a much better armor lying around.
Were B-modded red armour to keep its high durability when modded into fireproof, it would by the same token have to keep its low durability if you modded it while damaged. I love being able to slap a T-mod on my B-modded-but-heavily-damaged red armour to restore its durability, and I'm not sure I want to lose this.

Also, bear in mind that fireproof red armour will last longer than regular red armour because of how durability works (armour loses durability equal to hitpoints lost from an attack).

But yeah, I also see where you're coming from, I typically (if possible) like to have red nanofiber as my main armour, and switch to fireproof for certain circumstances (mancubus complex, Tower of Babel, etc.).

Discussion / Re: Balance issues for 997 -> 998
« on: July 17, 2013, 03:59 »
Badges don't really do anything in the game. As said, why nerf what is simply a self-accomplishment? You can play by your own rules for them. That is a good thing.

After a very small amount of time, all challenges and even AAo* challenges will be unlocked. If you *really* want all the badges, by all means grab them however you want to. Nerf them? I'm not sure that you can. They don't effect anything, they're just a different sort of challenge. It's actually one of the beautiful things in DoomRL. You can play it, you can win it, but there's an entire sub-section of wins available to you. It's not pokemon. You don't have to "catch 'em all" to have fun in the game, or even be an accomplished player.
By this logic, you wouldn't have any optional content like badges in the game.

Badges exist as evidence of an achievement; yes, you can fake them, but most people won't do this. Cheesing your way towards them, however, is something easier to do, and more importantly, something that isn't really particularly definable beyond "it makes the challenge easier than intended" (something which, arguably, sufficiently good play does anyway). In the case of abuses that gain easy diamond badges, of course these should be removed, so that the badge's integrity is intact, especially when the 'nerf' (which is indeed the wrong term in this case) is something as simple as not awarding badges gained from dual-angels.

54
30% fire resistance is just barely better than a red armor
So you mod the red armour for 55%.

A lot of assemblies that apply to multiple items are only really worth using on one specific item; singling out fireproof strikes me as an odd one.

No, you can definitely pick up BA without having Dragonslayer. Otherwise it would kind of suck if you found Berserker Armor first and couldn't again, even after you found DS?
Given that (to the best of my knowledge),

Huh, I always thought that DS was required for BA, but apparently not. Either that, or the game marks BA as seen even if you don't pick it up (possible, given that it's not in your inventory)?

Also, grats on having your first win both YAAM and Conqueror; Conqueror especially isn't anything to be sneezed at.

Post Mortem / Re: [U|Stnd|99%|YAVP] Conqueror
« on: July 11, 2013, 12:46 »
Wait, you got your first Conqueror Badge on UV? Awesome! Personally, when I first got Conqueror, I went with melee, since that negates the inventory management part, and since you have to do UC anyway...

Mortuary is awesome once you get the hang of it. I wholeheartedly recommend tackling it in melee (Vampyre, preferable). Knee-deep in the dead indeed.
I really wanted to and considered doing melee, but to be honest, I simply don't think I could take CC+ without Shottyman (I suppose I could play Shottyman for the first few levels then branch out to Vampyre, but that never occurred to me until I started typing this post). Still, Vampyre Mort is certainly something worth considering next time I'm playing a melee run (probably N! AoB, if I ever get good enough at Nightmare!).

--------------------------------------------------------------

This is probably the first run I've actually planned for in any great detail, and it's been a lot of fun; I'm not quite sure how many attempts it actually took after planning (probably somewhere between ten and twenty). I opted for SM/MGr; Shottyman because the ability to reload the rocket-launcher on the move is a huge benefit for CC+ (probably the biggest stumbling block on Conqueror), and Gunrunner because of the obvious synergy between the two traits. Int2 was a logical choice after that (it's simply a good trait, and synergises well with mobile characters); everything after that was improvised. During my thinking, I came to the conclusion that Conqueror is primarily an exercise in inventory management; there are several items you will end up carrying very long distances just to complete single levels (most obviously the Arena Master Staff), so I spent a reasonable amount of time considering the issue (and reading this article on the subject).

My strategy for CC+ consists of hiding in the starting room, killing everything in doorways and the lava pits, and wait until the Arena Master comes into LOS, from where I juggle to launcher and SM my way to victory against him (I was lucky enough to have some extra rockets spawn in a vault).

The Abyssal Plains went every bit as well as one would expect with MGr/SM; Cornershoot everything, find the Agony Elemental, kill 'em all. Unfortunately, between The Wall and The Plains, I spent the majority of my shotgun ammo; the next few levels were pretty nerve-rackingly touch-and-go, and a few times, I ended up [counter-intuitively] switching to my missile launcher to conserve shells. Eventually, I managed to farm a former, which kept me going long enough to get to Hell (as an aside, beating the Cyberdemon with nothing but sprint and movement keys is an awesome feeling. I'm not quite sure why I don't have his head, but I spawned pretty close to him; my guess would be that missile splash got me).

Somewhere between Plains and Babel, I missed a kill; a commando had managed to get himself into a nicely-defendable position, and wasn't budging due to acid, while I was on low health; I didn't really want to waste multiple rockets on a single commando. This may have actually been a good thing though, because later on in the game, the Angelic Set really did a lot to save me from some of my less intelligent choices.

UC was the usual “kill souls, demons into lava, abuse speed for Angel” affair, but I brought a P-modded chainsaw with me this time to avoid another seventeen-hour fight. I exchanged it for the Longinus Spear, not yet knowing I was going to put points in Brute; I’d just heard about the Angelic Set before, and wanted to find out what it was beyond fancy equipment.

The Mortuary… is fun. Okay, so when I was planning my Conqueror run, most of my thought went towards this level, because it's probably the most talked-about, and because it's a level which has cost me two or three characters otherwise ready to win the game. Ultimately, I came to the conclusion that what I needed to beat it was more EXP, which would naturally come with a Conqueror run, and… well, I was wrong, but on the right track. I'd held onto my skulls from The Plains, and picked up a fourth along the way, and these usually-terrible items are game-breakingly powerful in the Mort. I initially moved for a Supercharge, detonated a fire skull, swept my way through the left on an MGr/SM rampage (which, for the record, is a true thing of beauty), where I made it to a second Supercharge. I then swept right a little on a second rampage, then fought mostly fairly (using Int to elephant-gun enemies outside LOS), detonating the occasional fire skull when I heard a ‘Vile nearby and the corpses were piling up. After taking some damage through careless play, I used my blood skull and went on a final MGr/SM rampage for the win. This… was a [very long] bloodbath, and has propelled The Mortuary to my favourite DoomRL level. About halfway through this level, I was seriously worried about my ammo supply, so on level-up, I put some points in Brute, figuring that I could fall back on melee if my ammo ever ran out (which, surprisingly, it never did).

Erebus was one of two relatively unspoiled levels for me (it, along with The Vaults, were levels of which I only really knew one basic fact about. I knew The Vaults were filled with cool shit, and I knew Erebus was home to something called a Lava Elemental, which dropped a Lava Element, which granted a few turns of invuln). Earlier on, I said that Conqueror is more about inventory management than anything, and Erebus was awkward for this reason; I had no clue (though I probably should have guessed from the name) that I might want an envirosuit. My shock when I spawned on an island surrounded by lava as far as my LOS was extreme. I killed all the elementals and souls, and blind-fired a few rockets into the distance, dismayed at the lack of hit-noises or ‘hear the scream of a freed soul messages’; I used up a small and a large medpack dashing across, figuring I could use a homing phase device to get back. Rest of the level was actually pretty easy, though I was surprised that the Lava Elemental wasn't related in any way to Agony and Pain. Unfortunately, I ended up using the Element almost immediately to cope with a truly terrible spawn the next level (no full win for me).

The ability to detonate all the napalm barrels I wanted and walk through the results with impunity is awesome, and actually really useful.

My biggest failing was Dis. With Juggler and Int, I really should have been able to deal more damage before the Mastermind came into LOS, and take the brain; emptying the BFG10K alone into her brought her to 'Wounded'. But whatever, Conqueror win is a Conqueror win.

That one is more commonly known as "the medkit behind acid/lava" :)

I even used it on purpose sometimes, it can glue a bunch of idiots very easily
Oh fuck, that's amazing.

Now I know how this works, I'm definitely going to try to abuse it more often.

You should remove boots, wear Red Armor and walk a bit ;) .
...

Gah.

Yes, that really should have occurred to me. Something about AoMr really affects my better judgement, I'm so glad I won't have to touch it again until I start diamond hunting.
