Post Mortem / Re: [U|AoMr|100%|25|YAAM/YASD]
« on: July 08, 2013, 04:06 »
Why were you carrying a knife on AoMr? I can't be used at all, can it? Also, juggler doesn't strike me as a good choice with a Sharpshooter build...
I was using it so I could keep an ammo chain in prep, use an energy pistol for initial burst damage, then juggle to storm bolter for sustained DPS (which it's substantially better at with an ammo chain). The gain's pretty minimal, but once you've got SoG5, most trait gains are going to be minimal. Yes, I could have used anything for my in-between juggle, but the knife was the first thing I found.

YAAM is YAAM, whether you sacrificed yourself for the good of humanity or not (no need for the YASD tag).
Edited accordingly.

Well, there's something of a story behind this mortem.

I've been aiming for Marksman Platinum for a while, and I've had some problems. Not with the difficulty (which is honestly pretty negligible after the first four or five floors), but with a curse that seems to be afflicting me exclusively on AoMr. This curse always strikes me sometime after Armoury/Lab (by which point the game should really be auto-win), and causes me to do something so stupid it kills me, typically within a single turn. Particularly memorable Curse of Stupidity deaths have included:
  • Ignoring barrel placement when choosing a cover position against a revenant
  • Deciding I don't need to wear my fireproof red armour against this one last mancubus
  • Due to a mis-keypress in my inventory screen, walking out into lava without activating my envirosuit pack

I almost lost YAAM on the unholy atmosphere level to a Mancubus trapped by lava, but there were enough healing globes on the level that I managed to get the kill and leave on full health; beyond that, there really wasn't any challenge to this run. Except the curse struck. I found an invulnerability globe quite close to the stairs down to the last level, and I had two nukes. Seemed perfect. Nuked Mastermind, went down a level. Placed nuke, waited a little. Then, at six seconds, my 'inv' indicator dulled. Shit.

Moral of the story: count invulnerable turns. I've never gotten to JC before, so I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure I easily had the resources to take him. My fire speed was through the roof, and I had quite a reasonable amount of ammunition. But no, Curse of Stupid strikes again.

Oh, also, I came across two interesting bugs this run. The first is shown in the attached file (storm bolter pistol is apparently 'not worthy of a marksman', despite still damaging and killing enemies); I believe this was caused through Juggler (I'd just juggled my empty energy pistol to my knife, then juggled my knife to my storm bolter; the problem was fixed as soon as I got to a peaceful part of the map and weapon switched through inventory and back again). The second, which, unfortunately, I didn't screenshot (though it's not particularly screen-shottable) involved a cluster of formers standing still until disturbed in much the same way pinky demons do; the key difference being you actually needed to shoot them to disturb them. This took a while to figure out, so I ate a few shotgun blasts as I tried to figure out what was going on.

63
...if tedious.
Understatement of the year.

It's always bugged me that the game doesn't display the amount of damage that you took in your mortem; was this damageless/can you recall how much damage you took?

Discussion / Re: Balance issues for 997 -> 998
« on: June 30, 2013, 22:41 »
Personally, I'd just deny any badge gains in dual angels. If you can do it on a a dual challenge, either it will be a child's play with just one challenge, or the combination is helping you out, while dual angels should be more challenging. Of course, the angelic badges requiring dual challenge would be excepted from this.
This.

The simplest solution is generally the best solution.

3. AoOC needs some changes. Being the (very) easy brother of AoCn, it is also very fun and quick - an essence of what should coffee-break roguelike look like. Mentioned by Evilpotatoe way of handling its issues is certainly a good approach.
Moreover, I would "fix" its difficulty rating, because the current one is simply wrong :) .
I'd personally remove difficulty ratings all together. The challenge description should speak for itself.

Lucky Invul indeed. If you hadn't found one just before Dis, you would probably have been eaten alive. Or at least in 0996, 1 level of Ironman was enough to fully screw your chances of berserking against the Mastermind.... :S
Thanks for the tip. I'll keep that in mind next time I'm doing something like this, it honestly hadn't occurred to me as an issue.

It's probably worth noting that the chainsword isn't as big a help as I expected it to be. It's certainly better than the knife, but you're still gonna lose more HP than you want to if you have to stab any Arch-viles.

I don't normally play HMP, but I wanted a gold badge for next rank, and I saw this one. I figured that melee stairdiving can't be that much harder knives-only, so I went for it. It took a night or so of attempts, but here it is.

There really wasn't any strategy to this aside from lucky invulns and punching things.

Discussion / Re: Tactical Armour OP?
« on: June 15, 2013, 22:14 »
Sure it might feel OP but trust me, the first time you run into a surprise mancubi pack, you really wish you would've used a modded red armor instead.
I'm no stranger to surprise Mancubi, and I admit to keeping Fireproof Red armour on standby in case of emergency, but that regen really does strike me as ridiculous.

Eh, apparently I'm outnumbered and unsupported here, the regen really does feel ridiculous to me, but I may well change my mind after playing more Nightmare!.

I gotta concede that zero protection is a someone significant downside.

Discussion / Tactical Armour OP?
« on: June 15, 2013, 06:55 »
Okay, so from what I can gather, it used to be worse than it is now, but it's still pretty overpowered, and the problem comes about as a combination of factors.

1) Speed-built characters never need fear a monster again if they get Tac Armour; characters not built for speed are still doing ridiculously well with this, and probably don't have much to fear either.
2) It's assembled from three common drops, all of which drop from very early in the game.
3) It regenerates.

Point one is a characteristic shared with Phaseshift, but Phaseshift remains balanced by not being something you can rely on, and by punishing the player for sleep-deprived mistakes; you can screw up pretty monumentally with Tactical Armour, and it's okay, because you can retreat without being hit and your armour regenerates itself as if nothing happened. If you make a sleep-deprived mistake with Phaseshift, it may well be gone.

Point two is a simple case of "items should be balanced to their obtainance difficulty". Tactical Armour is very much an I-win card for certain builds, and it's still a highly viable option for everything except Entrenchment.

Point three was covered in point one; while Phaseshift is just as bad, if not worse, than Tac Armour, it forces you to keep your head and play sanely, it does not hold your hand and say "aww, you got shot, here, let me make it better for you".

Were I to nerf Tactical Armour, I'd remove regeneration, and maybe make it a Green + (A3) Advanced Assembly; the latter would be nice, but possibly overkill.

Uh, thoughts?

I probably don't need to explain how I got the Diamond, the tactic seems to be pretty openly discussed fairly regularly.

The eighteen hour playtime is because I took the tedious AoD fight minute blocks rather than as one consecutive fight, and ended up leaving the game running overnight at one stage (unmodded knives suck).

As for the win, that was mostly lucky. I wasn't quite sure what I was going to with HR2 and Fin2 without any survivability or damage boosts, so I figured I'd go for Int2 and try to outmanoeuvre everything for the win (and pray for a nuke to take the Mastermind). However, it turned out that the second level of Int wasn't necessary, because I was able to use Int1 to spend the entire game sprinting from invuln to invuln.

First Nightmare! win, and I probably won't have another one for a while, so I'm savouring the moment.

Nothing to add really aside from I was thinking the same thing and was considering making a thread about it too.

Definitely +1-ing this, though I'm personally leaning towards making the action slower than a regular reload (what is pick-up time, anyway?)

EDIT: Checked the wiki, it's one second (which seems a lot to me, but eh)

I didn't really look for it - it kinda got handed to me, lol. 23 isn't the place for running around looking for things, especially on an underleveled doomguy with no ranged weapons. It's nice if you can get it, and to be completely honest, it's the only reason I survived the fight, but imo MMB isn't too difficult to get - I have several of them, most without any invulnerability, since the Mastermind never closes distance. Int2 with plasma rifle is usually enough to grab it.
... I honestly can't believe Int2 Plasma Rifle (or anything with sufficient damage) never occurred to me. I play intuition occasionally, but I don't think I've ever played it seriously enough to get to the Mastermind with it.

Cyberdemon's Head, on the other hand - the one on your mortem - continues to elude me. Supposedly it's a simple matter of Fireangel + Dodgemaster, or even just Dodgemaster if you can position properly(or a lucky invulnerability chain ;)), but I have yet to manage it. So suffice it to say I'm more impressed with that, lol.
I have problems with non-invuln CH too, it's a real effort for me to play the fight slow enough to read the messages for the "reloads rocket launcher" alert. Explosion splash is a bitch too, Fireangel's a pretty big deal unless you get lucky with pillar generation and Cybie spawn.

Holy hell. I've been trying this with regular AoLT for hours now without success. And you're managing with only 2 inventory spaces?!
I'm assuming 'this' is the platinum badge, though I'm a little confused; assuming I understand the time system correctly, doesn't ArchAoLT actively help you get the platinum (30% speed boost equals actions take fewer turns)? Especially given that melee builds really don't care about inventory space?

Edit: What? You cleared the Anomaly? Why? I've just been running past it... It's free large medkits and a red armor, and I can usually make it to the exit with bonus health remaining... clearing it seems like an unnecessary risk at best, and a waste of those two medkits and the armor, or even a death, at worst. Or is it easier then I'm expecting? I always had a lot of trouble with it...
Experience points. I really don't get many kills on either of the LT challenges, and this (along with bosses, and UC now that I feel comfortable with it) is one of the few guaranteed sources of experience I've got. Anway, with zerk, it's really not that big a deal, just chainsaw things, run back for a health globe, trigger the brothers, and take them in a doorway.

Regardless, I looked over your mortem, and I must say, I'm kinda kicking myself for not looking for a dlvl23 invuln, Mastermind's Brain really makes the mortem look that much nicer (also I still don't have it).

35 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 28 of those were killed.
1 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
And 1 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

 5 souls destroyed the Mastermind...
5 killed the bitch and survived.

I get that this probably isn't a significant achievement, but I post it because I'm pretty pumped about my first (arguably second) Platinum (this is from someone who still can't get UV AoSh?)

Uh... yeah, this challenge is probably a little easier than its 'Blade' difficulty suggests, 30% speed boost is insane.

As for an actual commentary of the run, there isn't much to say. Stairsensed my way to CC with a shotty, got a lucky invuln chain going a few floors before Cybie, did UC because I've never done it before and I was on good health, took a few speed-boosting traits so I could hilariously outspeed anything that scared me too much.

Also, ignore the 5/35 success rate, I recently lost my playerdata recently, so I'm regetting some of my old badges (playing for badges I know I can get = fewer losses); I'm nowhere near as good as a 1/7 success rate.
