Requests For Features / Re: Auto-Pickup
« on: November 05, 2011, 15:39 »
I think Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup has a pretty good auto-pickup system.  And that's probably the only roguelike where I don't turn turn auto-pickup off.  I don't think it's worth adding it to DoomRL.

For my first speed run attempt, I came up with a brilliant game plan.
Strategy: Run for the stairs.
Side strategy: Grab invulnerability globes.
Backup strategy: Shotgun to the face.

I swear, I probably spent almost 5 minutes simply taking down the cyberdemon.  Shotgun was crappy against his armor, chaingun took too long to reload and I got blasted in the face, and I only had the ammo that came with the plasma rifle (could have grabbed a second one easily at one point, but hey, I was in a hurry).  If I had remembered about it, I would have tried to get Cyberdemon's Head, but since he spawned like 3 squares away, that would have been hard.  So a whole ton of shells later and he finally goes down.

Two more bronze badges to my credit, and 7 to go.  Can I beat Tormuse to all of them?  No, probably not.

I'd certainly be willing to compete.  I only recently graduated from being a beginner, but I think that actually gives me a good perspective on strategy.

« on: November 04, 2011, 20:46 »
Hehe, I guess I didn't remember things very well even just a couple of minutes after dying.  I came to the conclusion that it or Finesse would be the best choice for beating the Angel of Death (I was thinking Finesse could go up to level 3 normally, but saw on level up that it didn't), but for some reason I didn't go with that.  Well, the fact that I did choose Shottyman (man, I was still a whole level-up away from Shottyhead?) is all the more reason for me to high-tailed it out of there instead.  Don't know what I was thinking...

Pretty gutsy, going for that kill on AoI!
^This.  I don't know if I would've tried it, myself.  :P

Well, I had decent attack speed and good movement speed, and I really like killing things.  I had the possibility of taking him on in mind when I made the piercing chainsaw.  But I never got a good chance to take Brute for any level-ups, so I wouldn't have actually entered the Unholy Cathedral for that purpose.  I just found myself escaping through the Unholy Cathedral stairs, and convinced myself that it was possible.  If only I had a combat knife...

I was really just going for the Eagerness Bronze Badge, but this was going pretty well.  I was torn between Running Man and Shottyhead, but I decided for Shottyhead because I like shotguns.  I took the Whizkid detour too late, so I never got to build my assault rifle.  One thing I like about AoI is I don't have to worry about whether to drop ammo for health packs or vice versa.  Thus, I was carrying insane amounts of ammo that I could never hope to burn through.  I also paradoxically didn't have to worry about health as much, because I normally delay using medpacks and hope to find a health globe or berserk pack.  Here I actually spent a lot of time at 100% health or close to it.  Hell's Arena, easy; Chained Court, oops I ran out of berserk in front of the Arena Master; Hell's Armory, no thank you, not without any source of healing; Halls of Carnage, straight-forward; The Wall, never appeared, and even if it had I never once found a rocket launcher; Hellgate, I had to retreat back into the room to kill all the cacodemons, but the Bruiser Brothers were actually pretty easy when I started hiding in the room as well (but the shotgun took forever to kill them).

First thing that happens when I get into hell, that damn unholy atmosphere chased me out (any other mode and I probably would have stuck it out; I had 100% kills still because I still like killing things) and into the Unholy Cathedral to escape.  But then I got the bright idea that I could turn count the Angel of Death (and I had the piercing chainsaw to help me end it quickly).  So I cleared out the lost souls, lured the demons through the lava, just barely got a level up for another level of Hellrunner (I thought for a while about just getting Shottyhead and getting the hell out of there), and unleashed the Angel.  I could move 15 times before it couldn't move usually, but sometimes it would get off 16.  I circled around a bit hoping I could see a pattern, but it was beyond my attention span so I just decided to go for it.  First hit, the moment of truth... Hey, he didn't attack back!  I might actually kill him!  Yeah, let's move around a bit and prepare for another strike.  15 moves, and... ouch.   Okay, did I miscount or is this going horribly awry?  I circle around a few more times checking out his pattern without seeing any logic to when he gets 16 moves, so I move in for another hit, and I die.  Oh well, 9 bronze badges left.

(I don't know why my message log looks weird; it doesn't report any of my hits but the last one, or the first time the Angel hits me)

Discussion / Re: Quick questions thread!
« on: November 01, 2011, 11:06 »
The answer is probably "no", but I'll go ahead and ask.  If you have Whizkid 2, can you make a basic assembly using an assembled item?  The wiki doesn't explicitly say that you can't, but since it does mention that you can make basic assemblies for the uniques that can be modded, I would guess that it can't be done.

0.9.9.4 / Re: [BETA][M|91%|9|YASD] What is it with me and defense?
« on: November 01, 2011, 10:52 »
The curiosity alone almost makes me want to be a supporter...

458
I didn't succeed in obtaining MSs when I tried, so I can't say how good it is, but I definitely agree that being forced to take EE3 leaves you underpowered.  Requiring EE1 would be fine, and even EE2 would be acceptable.  So I would second the idea that the third level of EE not be required (if it would be replaced with a specific trait instead of a free trait choice, I'd suggest Finesse).

459
Though this would make it easier, I think it would match the "Darkness" flavor better if enemies only revived when you weren't looking.  It's how I imagined it was going to be until I tried an AoD run.  Your thoughts?

460
I'm on Windows Vista, and yep, I forgot that I tried the Angel of Patience mod.

461
Did you play a mod in the same doomrl session?
Aww crap, yes, I played the Angel of Patience mod.

462
The mortem.

It seems that the game didn't save any record of my victory in my statistics.
  • This game doesn't appear in my high scores, nor does it show me as having beat AoB in the statistics (still says I got up to level 4)
  • I should have earned the Berserker Badges up through Gold, but they didn't even show up in the mortem.
  • The Aurora Medallion doesn't show as obtained in my player statistics; I don't remember what the totals were for the other badges, but I imagine they weren't recorded either.
  • For sure, none of my melee kills were recorded.
  • The mortem itself says I have 8 wins, but I'm almost positive this should be my ninth. I remember looking last night and seeing 4 wins on HNTR and 4 on ITYTD.
  • I picked up several exotics/uniques that didn't show up in my records, like the sniper pack, the laser rifle, the gothic boots, and a few that I don't remember.
  • I assembled fireproof armor, which doesn't show up either.

Seems like it's maybe related to this bug report.  Maybe full wins on challenge modes are bugged?  Edit: No, I see a mortem for a full win on AoSh that got badges just fine.

The Butcher's Cleaver was a great early find.  If I had just been a little braver early on, and if I had skipped the Chained Court (to avoid not killing the cacodemons hidden away) I could have easily had 100% kills.  Alas, it doesn't really matter because none of the medals I earned, uniques and exotics I picked up, or badges that I should have earned but didn't even show in the mortem, or even a record of the win itself, were applied to my statistics.

Edit: I suppose I'll go ahead and describe this run a bit more.  It was fairly easy in the early game with the Butcher's Cleaver, but imps and sergeants could still deal some good damage against me if I wasn't careful.  I think there was only one level besides the Chained Court where I left without killing everything, and that was really just because I started right next to the stairs and didn't want to take many chances.  Going to the Chained Court was really rather pointless with the Butcher's Cleaver; I was sort of thinking about going for the Double Chainsaw, but I realized afterwards that would be pointless since I would get the Longinus Spear anyways.  I suppose I could have berserked and walked across the lava to get to the bacodemons, but since I already left a level with the enemies alive, there wasn't much point.  Hell's Armory was simple, though an imp managed to blow up the door to one of the arachnotrons, causing a bit of a panic.  Then I simply released the ahambler, and waited in a doorway until he got close enough to smack, which happened surprisingly quickly and without any real issue.  The Hellgate was actually pretty easy thanks to the Butcher's Cleaver allowing me to take care of the demons and lost souls quickly without being bombarded by the cacodemons too much.  Then I simply took on the bruiser brothers, which was also surprisingly easy considering the trouble I undoubtedly have on my non-melee runs.

The Necroarmor was a great find, and I really didn't use much else after that unless I needed fire resistance or if it was too banged up.  Unholy Cathedral was simple.  For the City of Skulls I used my Butcher's Cleaver to easily clear it.  Visiting it was really a no brainer because of the cleaver and MVm.  The complex of mancubi, and really all mancubi, weren't an issue, which was pretty surprising to me (maybe it's just because they were too slow and didn't get to attack me much?).  The revenants were the real threats to me, and of course any arch-viles (those damn things always run away while spamming their attacks).  Since I had 2 fire skulls, 1 blood skull, and 1 hatred skull, I figured the mortuary would be easy.

And it sort of was.  I used the hatred skull first, a little ways away from the center.  On the left side, I used one of my blood skulls to take out an arch-vile and a couple of the enemies he revived.  Then further left, there was a second vile (or maybe the same one that just got blown back a large distance; it was all pretty confusing, but I think it was a different one) who had a bit of an entourage.  I think this is when I used my second fire skull, which I don't think quite killed him.  Then by the time I got to the left side of the screen, there was a whole army of enemies revived and waiting to kill me.  I charged in with no regard for my safety.  I still never used the spear's secondary fire, though I was surrounded by enemies quite a bit and considered it. How does the fatigue effect even work (or does it even?) while you're berserked?  Anyways, I started getting my ass kicked (though I had plenty of health packs), but if I remember right I managed to take out one of the viles before I had to phase away (thankfully it took me to the cleared up left side, where I grabbed a supercharge before promptly running back into battle.  At one point, maybe before or after my retreat, I used my blood skull for some corpse clearing and a good healing.  I still had a lot of fighting to do though.  One would think friendly fire amongst the enemies would be a good thing, but it was actually pretty inconvenient because enemies kept getting blown away from me, especially when the arch-viles used their attack right when I got in melee range of an enemy.  Nevertheless, after I managed to take out the last vile, it was just a matter of some cleanup.  I grabbed the Angelic Armor, went ahead and took the nuclear BFG just in case (I found my nuke a long time ago, but a second one never hurts, and I had the inventory space), fully healed with a super charge, let my Necroarmor fully heal, used another supercharge, and marched on.

Since I actually planned for the Lava Pits, and since I don't have to worry about ammo taking up inventory space, I already had two envirosuit packs, plus I found another one close to the stairs which I used before entering.  Without any lava-walking drama, the Lava Pits were really easy.  The Lava Elemental didn't teleport away at all once I found him, so he died quickly.  And thus I was all set for a full win.  However, come level 24, a bunch of arch-viles and revenants tried to make it so that didn't happen.  I nearly lost my Angelic Armor and had to use a bit of healing, but I prevailed eventually.  My Angelic Armor was damaged enough that I didn't bother with it and just stuck with the Necroarmor, which was faster anyways.  I enter the Phobos Arena, go to activate my nuke, and almost use my lava element instead.  Thankfully I stop myself and do things in the right order, then proceed to the Hell Fortress for the final showdown.  I ran to the right, did a bit of zigzagging without much use, and started smacking JC with my Longinus Spear.  He fell quickly, and I celebrated my victory.  My copy of DoomRL was apparently not pleased with my success, so it didn't count my achievements.

--------------------------------------------------------------

A couple of very important lessons that I need to get into my head:
  • Don't pull every single lever, especially if the level feeling indicated something awful.
  • Stop pushing for 100% kills so hard.  Most of my wins have been with 100% kills, but also a whole lot of my losses have been because I wasn't willing to sacrifice my perfect kill rate..
  • Plasma hurts really bad and rips armor to shreds.

Early game was pretty straight forward.  I actually did a decent job on the Chained Court at first, but I almost died because some of the former humans had opened the back door of the room so there were cacodemons shooting me through the door when I went in there to heal with the berserk pack.  I didn't get The Wall, so no backpack.  Hell's Armory was simple enough, and the ahambler was nice enough to stay in melee range for a while, so I killed him without too much warping around.  He did dent me up a little bit, but I found a supercharge on the next floor right where I started.  Hellgate had me a little worried, but I used my staff to damage everyone and my berserk kicked in pretty fast.  I fought the bruiser brothers one at a time, so they were pretty easy.

At one point, I was foolishly pulling levers when I destroyed all the walls, and ended up fighting three mancubi and two archviles in the open.  I eventually warped away and managed to heal up with a pain elemental, but I lost some armor and health packs.  I had my assault shotgun, chaingun, rocket launcher, BFG, and plasma rifle all at the same time, and I decided that it was time to decide which ones to keep since it was hard managing all four kinds of ammo with all the health packs, armor, etc. I was carrying.  I tossed the assault shotgun first, and after a while without finding that third agility mod I tossed the chaingun as well.  I was planning to take on the Mortuary, so that's a large part of why I decided to keep the plasma rifle over the chaingun, so I would only have to worry about cells and a bit of missiles.  I kept the rocket launcher as a nice weapon for mini-emergencies, and I figured it would be nice for the Mortuary as well.  I got invulnerability right before the Spider Lair, so I massacred those arachnotrons.  However, their brethren in the Vaults would avenge them hard.  In the Vaults, I often wound up with arachnotrons coming at me from all different angles, with no place for me to hide.  I tried shooting them with my plasma rifle, but my accuracy was pretty horrendous.  So it came down to my micro launcher and lots of corner shooting for most of the dirty work, with some spearing for anybody who got too close.  In the end, I was completely out of health packs and down to my last armor.  But I had a boatload of cells and a decent amount of rockets.

The entrance to the Mortuary was on the next level, the level of my death.  I heard archviles and mancubi, and both staircases were on the other side of a lava river with no bridge.  Unfortunately, I forgot I even picked up that homing phase device. I was still foolishly hoping that I could succeed with everything, so I was saving my envirosuit pack for the Lava Pits.  If I had used it and remembered my homing phase device, I maybe could have quickly gone to the Mortuary stairs without getting killed, warped to the exit stairs there, grabbed the super charge, and maybe even clear it with all the plasma I had for my BFG, plus my fire skull.  Well, that didn't happen.  I walked across the lava at a good spot, and started blowing holes in the walls to get to the stairs.  Alas, I met an archvile and tried to hide behind a small wall which I promptly blew up with my BFG.  My little health remaining didn't last long.  I died, which made me angry enough to go berserk, then the level blew up.

I was making a lot of the assemblies just for the sake of making them.  The only one I was really hoping for, besides the double chainsaw, was the assault rifle which I wasn't able to get.  I never thought to use the secondary fire of the Longinus Spear, and honestly I sort of forgot it had one, plus it was always in my prepared slot.  Generally most enemies were fairly easy to kill, even mancubi and revenants when they were alone.  The only exceptions were the arachnotrons, archviles, and that one former commando who actually came fairly close to killing me despite only shooting a couple of volleys, because there's pretty much no way to avoid taking lots of damage in a fair fight.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Overall this was much easier than my last attempt where I was going for Sharpshooter.  Dualgunner just gives such a great damage improvement for the mid-early game (though I was stupid with my trait ordering when I picked SoB for my second trait, delaying it a bit).  Generally things went smoothly except for the hellgate.  I didn't handle the monster ambush well at all, and I retreated back to the corpses and waited for the bruiser brothers with my trusty fire skull, with some corpses right on the edge of my line of sight.  I saw the first bruiser brother get on that corpse, I activated the skull, and... that corpse didn't explode, just the ones near me.  So it was just me and my handguns versus the two of them, with a bit of friendly fire helping me out.  There were a few other sticky situations where I ended up with as low as 2% health (no joke) when I was being reckless and stingy with my health packs (and a time when I pulled a lever early on and it was a monster spawner; I need to stop doing that).  And on that note, I started getting so many large health packs once I entered hell that it wasn't even funny.  I also started getting a lot of mods, with nothing to use them on except the occasional armor pickup.

The complex of archviles was actually really easy because there were a couple of invulnerability globes sitting around. But I believe it was on level 23 that I really came close to death due to some revenants that were revived by an offscreen archvile on the other side of a lava river.  I tried retreating into the nearby building, but the revenants kept blowing holes in it, so I just had to heal up, find that archvile, and do some asskickin'.  I already had a few mods in my inventory, and I found a few more, plus several pieces of armor on that level, so I just decided to go ahead and use the mods on the armor, just for fun.  I still had a technical mod left which I might have been able to make an assembly with, but I didn't think about it so I kept it.  Then on level 24 I started next to a huge pack of enemies which included two archviles which I managed to kill really quickly.  Turned out there were more archviles than just those two, so I had to hunt them down so that they'd stop reviving things, then I went back to just killing stuff.  That is the only Mancubus I saw(though it was enough to advance me to Mancubus rank), which is probably a good thing seeing how my previous run went.  I found an agility mod on that level, and there were some former humans that dropped pistols, so I went ahead and made my second speedloader pistol and replaced my blaster for the final fight.

Cyberdemon was pretty wimpy, and I managed to dodge most of his missiles.  The first time I got hit was when I forgot to dual reload (having my blaster prepared made me forget about it) and I decided to reload my second pistol instead of dodge.  After that, I was dodging missiles easily, and I was worried that that one error would keep me from getting the Cyberdemon's head medal, but I ended up getting shot again near the end of the fight, so it turned out not to matter.

Taking out the archviles themselves was actually extremely easy, especially if I could corner shoot them.  Even if I was in a straight up fight, I could kill them while only taking one or two hits.  Really, just about everything died easily near the end, and the only trouble was survival, hence why I took Badass.  The only thing that was really troublesome was when archviles revived big things, especially when I wasn't sure where the archvile even was.  When I first traded an agility modded pistol (which was to be my second speed loader pistol) for the blaster, I wasn't sure if it was the right move.  I decided that the fire time and plasma damage and recharging of the blaster was worth the 2 accuracy bonus difference, though I'm not sure.  I was surprised at how often the blaster missed, but when I fought groups of enemies I tried to line it up so that I had multiple targets in my line of fire.  Putting a technical mod on the blaster probably wasn't the best choice with how Dualgunner works, but it seemed like a good idea at the time.
