--------------------------------------------------------------

Oh man, I was doing so well.  I probably should have just started hurrying towards the end game, but I was having such a fun time killing stuff.  In the previous level, I cleared out a warehouse with two mancubi and two archviles (though I almost died in the process).  Then there's this level.  That powerup you see near the right side of the map?  Invulnerability.  I was saving in case I heard or saw any of the big three, which I didn't.  So with around 76% health left, I opened a door in an area I hadn't been around too much, and then I looked at my mortem to see what the hell just happened.  A lone mancubus, exactly the sort of thing I was saving my invulnerability for.

By the way, getting a speed loader pistol on the third turn is just great.  It was obsoleted by my heavily modded pistol eventually (which is why I detoured to Whizkid) and I simply dumped it once I found the Grammaton Cleric Beretta, but it was great for the early game.

Not much interesting to say about this one I guess.  Early game was fairly straight forward with one exception: in the future, I will not pull enemy spawning levers just for fun.  The only special level I visited was the Halls of Carnage for the BFG9000.  It was level 9 or 10 when I spawned in an arena where I had two archviles and a Mancubus at the same time; cue BFG and rocket launcher.  On level 11 I had the pleasure of spawning directly adjacent to a pack of Archviles and Revenants; cue BFG and battery.  I got banged up a bit, but those were the only enemies on that level and I was able to heal up before the Cyberdemon fight.  And that cyberdemon fight was by far the toughest I've had so far, because despite my running, he seemed to blow the crap out of me; I had to use all 4 of my large medpacks to survive(and each time I used one, I forgot to go back to running, resulting in me getting blown up a bit more).  I opened up with a couple of BFG shots, then switched over to my plasma shotgun for the armor tearing action, which didn't work as well as I'd hoped.  On the note of the plasma shotgun, I learned it is not wise to corner shoot with it, because it tears up corners.

I think I'll go for Angel of Marksmanship next.

--------------------------------------------------------------

After losing a HNTR melee build to my recklessness, I decided to to simply move back to ITYTD to see how things went.  It went well.  I didn't even start with the melee stuff until I got my chainsaw, and then I got Juggler and was able to freely kill stuff left and right.  I had enough goodies to back me up from a range, but I always enjoyed running into combat against mancubi and archviles (the only revenant I saw was one that spawned with an archvile and two mancubi when I pulled a lever; I don't think any of them even got to act).  Since I had good ranged weapons for backup, I was able to maintain 100% kills (not much to brag about on ITYTD, but I think it's cool).  I found some invulnerability on level 24, so I took it, used a homing phase device, descended, activated my nuke, ran to the stairs, ran straight towards JC and commenced with slaughtering him.  I don't know if it's a ITYTD thing or just the speed at which I killed him, but he didn't summon anything, not that it would have helped him against my immortal berserk rage.  I like how the entire final level text fits in the mortem :)

Since I wasn't going for pure melee, Badass and Finesse were the logical early traits; I decided on Badass first because double health is great. Juggler wasn't too much of a detour from Vampyre, but I wasn't sure about the two trait side trip to get Whizkid.  I had a good amount of mods sitting in my inventory though, so I went for it.  Now I've experienced the power of melee builds, and I'm very pleased.  The only tricky part is getting into melee range.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Not a whole lot to say about this one.  I tried a few AoMr runs that ended really early, so I decided to try a AoSh run.  A little bit before the Hellgate, I had several Cacodemon caves pretty much in a row, which I thought was going to end my game, because they really tore me up.  However, I prevailed, and still kept my 100% kill rate.  Most everything except those caves went fairly well (oh, and the Chained Court once again, though I tried sticking with my shotgun instead of the chainsaw), with the big exception of Hell's Armory.  If I recall, I got MAD in the Armory itself, just as I had hoped. That is why I decided to face the Shambler, though it was still a very tough fight.  The Shambler had a bad habit of teleporting right as he got into good double shotgun range, though I got a few good blasts in.  My power modded shotgun did most of the work though.  I had 2 large and 2 small medpacks, and they were all gone by the time I killed him, and I was at around 50% health.  I had a bit of a panic in the hellgate as I got surrounded by demons, but some arena staff and healing and more arena staff fixed that.  The cacodemons did tear me up slightly, though.  I released the Bruiser Bros and retreated to the door, thinking I was so smart, but shortly into the fight the door and surrounding walls were blown up, so I had to fight 2 on 1.  My elephant gun tore them up really fast though.  At this point, I had several partly torn up armors, red and blue, some modded.

Curiously, I was a little ways into hell before I even found a combat shotgun.  It didn't matter a whole lot since I had my elephant gun after the Armory, but it's pretty odd luck for my first Angel of Shotgunnery.  Not much interesting until I found my Onyx Armor pack, which solved my armor troubles, though I still held on to my power modded red armor just in case.  The Spider's Lair and Vaults went pretty well, using up a few large medkits, but at that point I had plenty and was leaving them on the ground (the only reason I went to the Spider's Lair was to prove that I could beat it after I stupidly got massacred there in an earlier game.  I ended up finding a super shotgun in the vaults, which was cool but unnecessary).  A bit later, I just sort of got bored, so I started using my homing phase devices to just skip the last couple of levels, ruining my perfect kill rate. I probably had enough resources to do YAAM pretty easily (I at least had enough to escape any trouble if I continued the attempt, as I had 3 homing phase devices), but for reasons unknown even to me I just decided that I didn't want to bother.  Maybe I should try a higher difficulty or something...  Anyways, I instantly skipped 22, searched a bit on 23 after warping to the stairs in case I found some invulnerability, and scoured level 24 for any invulnerability, which I didn't find, so I had to settle for a standard win (I probably skipped over the stairs to the lava pits, but I never once saw an envirosuit pack the entire game so it was out of the question).  Thus, I just had to beat the Cyberdemon the old fashioned way, with super shotgun blasts to the face.

I tried dodging from a couple of squares away from the Cyberdemon, but more missiles hit me than missed (I think I forgot to run, which I actually remembered to do for other parts of this game).  I equipped one of my many shell boxes for the fight, but it never got used since I was dancing around and shottyman took care of the reloading.  He fell quickly.

Miscellaneous thoughts: I hate Cacodemons so much.

Next up: I'll probably try a melee build in a standard game.

Very very nice win!  I like your style of prevailing even though you made a few tactical errors; that trip through the lava pits was entertaining though.

Now see if you can beat this game under those special challenges, or better yet, on a higher difficulty.  ;-)

I try to stick with my games until I die a horrible death, for the learning experience.  The one exception I can remember was when I was trying to do a 100% kill rate on ITYTD, but I put down my rocket launcher to grab and use a mod, forgot to pick it back up, and entered the Wall.  I ragequit pretty hard there.

My third best HNTR to date is actually an Angel of Marksmanship run (my only AoMr run, actually) on HNTR where I almost got to the Phobos Hellgate; that was actually a long time ago, before I had even won on ITYTD I think, and it was pretty fun.  Other than that, I've tried and failed miserably at AoB a few times.  I actually considered trying AoSh to attempt my first HNTR win, but I decided to stick with the standard game.  Now I guess I'll try out all those challenge modes.  I'll stick with HNTR for a while though >_>

  • full win

  • visit to the Mortuary (and cleared it!)
  • visit to the Lava Pits (and cleared it!)

Besides the Chained Court which I've been having trouble with since I upgraded from 0.9.9.2 to 0.9.9.4, the early game went pretty smoothly.  I found a room with two combat shotguns in a vault before I entered Hell's Arena.  The Wall was a bit sloppy, as usual for me, but it wasn't too bad.  My first big mistake was after I cleared Hell's Armory and I was applying an agility mod to make an assault rifle: I suddenly had the thought that I should wait until Whizkid 2 if I could so that I could add a mod to it, so I said no to building the assembly, not realizing that it would still use the mod.  I was mad enough that I almost quit, but I decided to carry on.  There were some minor tactical blunders occasionally, but it went pretty smoothly until the Hellgate.

At the Hellgate, I decided to copy what I'd first seen in one of Game Hunter's videos, blasting holes in the walls to kill the enemies instead of just unleashing them all at once (though I forgot the part where he unleashed one Bruiser Brother and took it out alone, which caused a little bit of pain).  In early Hell, my plasma rifle was still unmodded, and I didn't have any Eagle Eye yet, so I still primarily used my A3 chaingun and tactical shotgun.  I started slowly running out of ammo for my chaingun, but I was building up my plasma rifle slowly, so it started seeing more use as I went on and faced more armored enemies.  I accidentally skipped over the City of Skulls when I forgot there was a special staircase on that level, but I wasn't as angry about that because I knew I'd be skipping the Unholy Cathedral anyways, so I wasn't going to visit all the special levels anyways.  Then a bit later I found the Mortuary staircase...

Mortuary was actually really easy for me.  Of course, it really helped that I had a PB red armor (or it would have if I had taken any real damage), and a hatred skull that I used right after entering which gave me enough berserk to kill everything, plus a B3 BFG9000 with a lot of spare cells, though not as many as I'd thought, and I also had my missile launcher and some missiles as backup.  I took like 6% damage and my armor barely got a scratch, but I finished with around a stack of cells plus some change, and I was out of missiles.  I grabbed the nuclear BFG and power modded it (later I added a bulk mod because I had a bulk mod in my inventory), and I ditched the regular one due to insufficient cells.  Next came the Lava Pits.

I went into the Lava Pits with only a single envirosuit, which turned out to not last nearly long enough.  I had plenty of homing phase devices, so I could have escaped, but I wanted to keep my 100% kill rate.  No problem, I had about 9 large health packs to walk on lava with (and I ended up using three or four of them).  I never bothered to equip the Phaseshift boots (EDIT: I forgot they aren't uniques so it doesn't say in the mortem, but I found them in the Lava Pits), for no real reason except I didn't feel like it.  I cleared out the enemies with lots of shotgun blasts, then gave the lava elemental a little bit of plasma.  I used an envirosuit to get to the lava element, and since I'm stupid, rather than use one of my 3 homing phase devices, I decided that it would last long enough for me to walk to the stairs and I held down the direction key.  I got fairly singed, but luckily I didn't die.  I still had a few squares of lava left, so I had to use my homing phase device anyways (or I could've used the other envirosuit pack I got in that level, but I figured that might come in handy, which it did for simply navigating some lava near the end of the game, but I found another suit before then anyways as you can see in my inventory).

What with all the heavily armored enemies which my shotgun was worthless against, I ended up at the Phobos Arena with maybe 8 cells in my plasma rifle, and my new chaingun that I grabbed on level 24 since I had already ditched my A3 chaingun a little while back (shouldn't have even bothered; I tried blind firing at JC before I realized I was being stupid).  Nuke plus lava element equals full victory attempt!  I don't know if it's intentional, but JC never moved an inch the whole fight (but he was good at hitting me with missiles when he was outside my Cateye visual range, hell, even outside my intuition range, but his missiles were also easy to sidestep), plus he shot his own lost souls with rockets a whole hell of a lot, though the wiki says that he can't hurt himself (he still probably should be a bit smarter).  I guess he has a finite amount of ammo, because eventually he just stopped shooting rockets, so I was left blasting lost souls with my tactical shotgun until my Nuclear BFG charged enough to actually damage JC, and then it became easy.  Heck, it was actually pretty easy once I realized he would own me if I didn't sidestep his rockets, because after that I just had to sidestep until he fired, then shoot some lost souls, rinse/repeat.  It took me a while to realize that though, again because I'm dumb.  My angelic armor got torn up pretty bad because of all his missiles, but I had my two modded reds as spares, plus I still had about 5 large medkits and a couple of small ones going in.  I can definitely say though, if it were Barons (probably anything but lost souls) that JC summoned, I would not have stood a chance with my inventory.

---

I still had quite a few tactical blunders, but I think I'm a lot better than I used to be.  One of my flaws is still that I rarely use running, mainly because I forget that it exists.  Cateye was nice, as was Intuition 2, but I definitely wasn't good enough to use them to their full potential.  Intuition 2 was probably more useful, partly because I had it for so much longer, but also because knowing that there's a horde of enemies on the other side of a wall is a lot more useful that a little sight advantage in my opinion.  There's just too many walls for Cateye to be that useful by comparison, the way I see it.  If I had the choice between Intuition 2 and Cateye without having to worry about prerequisites and blocking, I would take Intuition 2.

My missile launcher actually got quite a bit of use(the first bulk mod I added was because I confused the rocket launcher and missile launcher and wanted to make a tactical rocket launcher; I just decided to continue with the bulk modding since I didn't carry many missiles), unlike most of my other games.  Intuition 2 meant I could blow hordes of enemies up while I was out of their sight, plus it was nice for keeping Mancubi and the like out of my sight while I killed them.  It did sort of hurt my ammo problem when I was blowing up Arachnotrons and the like, but hey, it was awesome to blow stuff up like that.

I've given some more thought to this.  Here's some things that make shotgun blast cones different from most of the other stuff:
1. Guaranteed to hit
2. Damage dropoff with distance
3. Shots aren't obstructed by enemies

100% accuracy is interesting, because it is nice to use, but it's also really different from everything else.  If shotguns fire a cloud of shrapnel, 100% accuracy would make sense, and hey, that's fine, I don't see why DoomRL shotguns can't be different from real life.  If shotguns were subject to accuracy, I don't see why a dodge bonus for the pellets would be unreasonable, at least any more so than dodging bullets. An accuracy bonus might make sense for things directly in the line of fire, but that would probably be pretty awkward.  So the 50% accuracy would be pretty terrible, unless there were a ton of pellets.  The thing that bugs me the most about guaranteed hits is that it makes Eagle Eye and agility mods worthless, and it removes the penalty for running.

Damage dropoff makes sense, but it's also pretty strange compared to the way all the other normal weapons work.  The most awkward thing is how the damage dropoff occurs even at point blank range from what I've read.  Why?  If a weapon says 8d3 then there should be a chance for it to do 24 damage.
I don't really think damage dropoff should be removed without the other changes going along with it, but if a pellet-based system were to supercede it, I think it would be a good thing.

Shooting through enemies is what really makes shotguns awesome.  But then we have to believe that shotgun pellets are not very good at penetrating armor, while also being good at hitting things behind the armored opponent.  This one could be changed separately from the rest of the parts; I for one would be willing to give the enemy piercing in exchange for another damage die or two.  However, the pellet system would of course take care of this.

---

I really like the shotgun, so I'd hate to see it simply be replaced by the combat shotgun, but it can't really be buffed without making the former sergeants more of a pain.  One thing I was thinking about regarding the slower reload time, who says the enemies have to reload as fast as our marine?  Maybe the bloodlust of the former soldiers makes them clumsy and slow with things like reloading (applied to all former foos, but it would come up more with sergeants since they have to reload more often).  Of course, it doesn't solve the problem of the combat shotgun dominating the regular shotgun, but it keeps the shotgun reload buff from being turned against us so painfully.

Since I mentioned agility mods, I think they should have some effect on shotguns (I was thinking they did in a previous version, but my memory's kind of bad).  Perhaps decreased damage dropoff, or increased knockback.  I don't know why something that increases the accuracy of guns would do something like that, but I don't know why they would make you move faster in your boots either :)

473
Shotguns always did seem weird to me.  I assume this plan would kill the damage percent dropoff since the pellets would already be spread out at larger distances?  I can't really speak intelligently about armor changes because I'm not familiar enough with the balance involved in that, but the larger dice seems like a nicer solution.  I think the shotguns would need a few more pellets though, considering that at anything but point blank, some pellets won't even have a chance to hit a single target because of spread (but I guess that'd make them even more devastating at close range).

I've been ditching regular shotguns for combat shotguns for a long time now.  I agree that shotguns are pretty squarely outclassed by combat shotguns (and the faster reload time was a real pain when I tried an AoB run and that sergeant was just sitting on the staircase).  However, eliminating it just doesn't feel right.  I think with the first change, there may be room to work with, perhaps giving the regular shotgun a d8 for hit dice and only d6 for the combat shotgun.

474
I definitely support 2 and/or 5.  3 would be pretty nice as well, which usually comes up for me in the Chained Court as every former human shoots at the same time, sometimes killing each other and adding more messages.  Perhaps one could press escape to skip all the text?

I agree that wait time should be based off move speed.

« on: September 05, 2011, 14:23 »
Ah yes, the Shambler is a tough bastard.  The fact that he can teleport away and heal himself makes him irritating to fight at the best of times; he's big trouble if you're not prepared for him, and the shotgun is tough to use against him effectively.

And yes, I've had many games where I was doing well and thought I had enough health to get by only to lose because of a barrel I didn't see.  I feel your pain.  :|

Looks like it was a pretty good run up to that point, though.  Keep at it; you're bound to win soon!  :)
Yeah, it was progressing nicely overall.  I actually have 2 victories on ITYTD, if those count for anything. ;)

Usually. Thanks to the class system, you can get MAD by the Armory now (I did it earlier on HNTR), but that or an unusually-early Plasma Shotgun are the only reasonable ways to do it with shotguns.
I was originally thinking of doing a shotgun build, but I decided to try out some of the new master traits instead.  I just love the knockback and guaranteed hits of shotguns.

Hello, fellow DoomRL players.  This right here is the furthest that I have made it on HNTR so far.

Hell's Arena went fairly smoothly, with three shotguns and lots of hiding.  My first moment of panic happened in the Chained Court, when my berserk somehow wore out before I killed the Arena Master and with about half a dozen former humans around me still.  A bit of shotgunning got me out of that mess.  My next roadblock was at the Wall, where I always seem to get several Barons and Knights attacking me at once; I guess I don't have the patience to play it carefully enough.  Anyways, my trusty shotguns and some rockets got me out of that mess as well, but not without using a few of my health packs.  After this though, my missile launcher and spare rockets just kind of sat around taking up three inventory spaces for the most part - I'm just too afraid of hitting myself with splash damage or destroying walls nowadays to bother usually.

And my next moment of panic was at Hell's Armory (the special levels are hard).  Clearing out the enemies was easy enough, but then I wondered what that fancy lever did and I pulled it.  I heard a roar, and realized I had released something from the building on the far left.  After a bit of moving, I saw the Shambler and blasted it a bit with my trusty combat shotgun a bit before it warped away.  So as the Shambler warped around, I figured I'd just wait for it in one of the doorways and blast it with my double barreled shotgun whenever it got close, and then blast it a bit with my combat shotgun.  Yeah, I'd never encountered a Shambler before.  After a lot of shooting and a couple of health packs, I decided to check the wiki to see just how much health this thing had.  And that's how I discovered that it was healing over time.  Given the choice between retreat and chasing the Shambler, I chose to chase it.  After a lot of time, a lot of shotgun shells, and a lot of health packs, it was dead.  I went in with something like 3 large health packs and 5 small health packs, and I believe I was down to 1 large and 2 small by the time I left the Armory, all because of that Shambler.

After clearing level 11 of enemies, I finally noticed there was acid slowly flooding the place.  Then there was a nuke on level 12 which freaked me out, but I finished the level with plenty of time.  Then came the Halls of Carnage.  The lava slowly flooding the place freaked me out, but this actually went pretty well.  I finally had a plasma rifle at this point, so the Cacodemons and Hell Knights got mowed down without much issue.

I really dropped the ball at the Hellgate.  I decided that I'd use my missile launcher to try to quickly take out the Cacodemons, but it turned out my line of fire was blocked by the lost souls.  So I decided to hit the Cacodemon with splash damage by shooting the wall near it.  It didn't really work out well.  I switched to my shotguns and plasma rifle to take them on, and used the staff when I ended up getting surrounded.  My red armor didn't even last me to the Bruiser Brothers.  If I was thinking more, I would have used my bulk mod on it.  I triggered the Bruiser Brothers, and then went back to the previous choke point.  I unloaded my plasma rifle on one of the bros, but it wasn't enough to kill it, and my chokepoint didn't work so well when their plasma destroyed the walls around me.  I switched to my double shotgun to kill the injured one, but that wasn't enough either.  In a panic, I turned to my BFG.  I got into hell, but I was just about out of plasma and I was at less than 40% health.  I probably could have been fine for a while still, because I still had three large health packs.  But I thought I'd save them and hope for some health globes.  So on the first floor of hell, I killed a few enemies without much issue, and then I saw two former sergeants on the other side of a wall, so I thought I'd go around them from above the wall.  However, there was a napalm barrel above the wall, and I was kind of expecting a horizontal wall to keep me out of the line of fire of those sergeants.  I was wrong, so I died.
