I was craving some DoomRL but I don't have a lot of time to play right now, so I decided to try for Pacifist Gold.  It took a couple of attempts to get off the ground with some good early floors

This time I couldn't phase past the Anomaly, so I just had to run.  The Bruisers took care of the lost souls on my tail.  And my armor.  And a lot of my healing items...  In fact, a lot of the time there were lost souls on my tail.  I ran into a lot of tough enemies this time around as well: former captains (usually with a ton of sergeant buddies), some revenants, an archvile (who killed a lost soul that was following me), and even a mancubus, most of it without any armor.  In one level, I went all the way to the right side of the map and was getting my ass handed to me, with no stairs in sight.  I got really lucky and found an invulnerability globe before I died, and managed to find the stairs on the far left side of the map...

I grabbed that last level of finesse because I was fumbling around trying to quickly select Ironman before realizing that I was maxed out.

Nice :) Pacifist is stil on my to do list, though I'd only be aiming for the Silver for the moment. Think I'm going to go for the Scout instead of the Marine (mostly in order to prevent the problem of not being able to find the stairs), but I'm still in doubt as to what Skill progression to take. I'd take TAN to get BAD (as a Scout then), but you only took TAN instead - why not BAD, since I've read that at later dlevels, TAN gets pretty useless?

HR/DM/IRO make perfect sense. Maybe I'd take INT as well, at a later stage. Any tips?

Angel of Pacifism is one of a few challenges where the scout's ability to see the stairs is specifically blocked (which is silly in my opinion, as this means the challenge is less about skill and more about luck). I still choose scout for angel of pacifism for the extra move speed and I aim for Running Man.

In the previous version you could "outrun" the lost souls by entering a doorway diagonally so you get out of its sight and the closing it. Nowadays they are much more dangerous and deadly in situations when you can't/don't want to kill them.

I think Int1 is pretty useful, since it lets you know there are invulns in your path. It's been a while since I played a pacifist run (I once managed to beat it on HMP, but UV and above is a suicide).

I wonder if it would be viable to go with Malicious blades... though it's tough enough to get that master when you can kill stuff.

Yeah, the Scout's stairsense is blocked unfortunately.  A lot of my early AoPc attempts used Scout for the extra speed, but some time recently I saw thelaptop say that Marines were the class to choose because of their power-up bonuses.  The extra base health is also nice.

I don't know whether Tough as Nails or Ironman is the better option to take first, mathematically.

(which is silly in my opinion, as this means the challenge is less about skill and more about luck)

How is knowing where the exit is and taking the path of least resistance every floor 'skill'?

Skill in games where stair sense is blocked is defined as stretching your luck as far as you can.
