0.9.9.4 / Re: [H|99%|YAVP] First standard win :-D
« on: January 02, 2012, 07:14 »
I skipped the Mortuary when I thought I'd missed the City, thinking that Conqueror was out of the question and it was no longer worth the risk.
Pre-Bru I was mostly using shotguns and chainguns; I wanted Int2 before the Armory (it's always useful to have, but the Shambler is a particular PITA without it). It basically works out as start with EE (I didn't need the Badass until I got to a level with health spheres), second EE usually during the Arena (chaingun >>>>> shotgun for Hell Knights), modded the chaingun up to a gat, then Int up in time for the Armory and Bru-Bru-Ber up to the Cathedral for the Scythe. Ditched the gat towards the end when the ammo ran low (switching to laser rifle), hoped to mod up something decent (didn't have many mods left by the end though; I got the sniper pack after I'd found the laser rifle and the Railgun), and bunged on a last-minute Bru when I thought I was so low on ammo I'd need to slash the Cyberdemon to death.

The time is swollen by the fact that I stopped to have a bath half way through.
Really wanted to go for Conqueror this run, but somehow missed visiting the City of Skulls. :-/ (Although looking back it may not have been generated - does Conqueror require all levels to be generated, or can you just visit what's there?) I was still hopeful of YAAM, but I fatfingered on the Lava Pits and used a homing phase instead of my second envirosuit; didn't have enough health left by the end of it to polish off and had to bail out, leaving me on 33% health and one mancubus as the surviving #762. Found a Megasphere early on the next level, polished off all that lot, grabbed whatever ammo was left that I could find (mostly rockets from a cacodemon vault, and some mancubus and revenant dregs), took on Cybie unloading everything I had (Railgun, then BFG, then the missile launcher; never found a nuke) and finally got my first standard win.
Yeah, I could probably have got a standard victory ages ago on HNTR or something, but I wanted to make it count (and get the silver medal :-D).
Also, considering how much of a cow it is to get, I'm really disappointed that there isn't at least a medal for the Scythe (which made mincemeat of the Vaults). Finally found the right build to get it; I used to go Fin-Fin-WK before the Bru-Bru-Ber in the hopes of powering through the Cathedral with the double chainsaw, but berserking (and a handy invinicibility) proved rather more sensible.
I swear I'll get a YAAM someday.

The thing about the Halls is that usually by then I'm really not short of shells; I've typically got at least half a dozen stacks and a shell box or two from the Armory or such, meaning that my bigger problem is normally working out what to dump from my inventory; green armors, small medpacks and surplus shells are the priorities. Shells I don't need and rockets and a BFG I can't use means that the only reason I'd be down there is XP grabbing, which wasn't that significant a goal by then.
When I said low health by the City Of Skulls I meant it; badly timed arachnotron caves are sheer death for AoSHers and I had about 28% health and no medpacks by the time the level appeared. Otherwise you're right; double shotgun blasts utterly annihilate Lost Soul packs and it would have been easy. But as it was it wasn't really a risk worth taking. Ah well.
I wouldn't even contemplate attempting the Mortuary these days without all the skulls from the City, preferably one more besides, half a dozen large medpacks and a well-placed invincibility on the previous level.

You have GOT to be kidding me.
Given that my general games tend to be shotgun-based anyway (carrying different types of ammo around is a complete arse), I figured Shotgunnery shouldn't be too difficult a challenge to complete. A bit of intelligence with blind shooting finally taught me how to deal with arch-viles and mancubi; and three worthwhile attempts later (two ably assisted by lucky early Jackhammers and incompetently ruined by very-late-game stupidity), I managed to pull everything together in the mortem up there. First full win! :D
And it would have been a 100%, but for those two poxy lost souls that didn't die in the last double shotgun blast at John Carmack. Two skulls between me and YAAM. :(
Skipped the Arena (rubbish for early Shottys), Court (rubbish without the Arena), Wall (no phase devices), Halls (pointless without access to the BFG), Cathedral (pointless unless AoB), City of Skulls (didn't really have enough health at the time), Spider's Lair (ditto, and I found a nuke on the access level anyway so I didn't need to go for a nuclear overcharge), Vaults (rubbish without the Court) and Mortuary (lolno, although does the Hellwave pack gib corpses? If so it might have been worth a look - I had a blood skull by then too).

I just got killed in the Halls on a Pacifist run (took the wrong exit out of an arachnotron cave); one-square wide corridors and the doors mean ruination unless you've got a homing phase device. :-/ Otherwise, yeah, it's pretty much easy street.

Discussion / Re: Nub question - where abouts should I be by now?

I started doing a hell of a lot better at AoB runs the moment I realised the Arena was all but pointless; it costs far more health than you gain, the Court gets you a weapon that'll last you two thirds of the game anyway, and the Arena Master's Staff is nice if you're chasing uniques but otherwise the Lance is easy enough to obtain and perfectly fine for the endgame.
Conversely, my best AoB runs ended in either The Mortuary (the armour would be nice but there's nothing vital there for a berseker) or the Spider Pits (more due to carelessness than brute force, but still - no real need to visit on a melee run).
The Wall is a level I habitually skip altogether. I'd love the backpack and the missile launcher, but most of my characters are too ordinary trait-wise by then to not get pasted.

« on: November 21, 2011, 17:16 »
Just got another AoPc partial win as well; I figured if I'd got one speedrun medal under my belt without really trying I could probably get another one too. Major Icarus and Compet-N Gold are now mine (missed Platinum by 3:13 because of my uncle coming to say goodnight and talking about my plans to go to the hospital tomorrow...). Also sprinted across the Mortuary thanks to a lucky invincibility on the previous level, which may be how I also got another UAC Star; medal for kills without damage + pacifism = LOL.
Anyway. 8 medals finally means I've got my Heroic Bronze badge and the Mortuary escape got me my Reaper Silver. Nicked the NBFG out of the Mortuary for my 41st special, too. Huzzah.

Okay, this was RIDICULOUS. I just made a post over there somewhere bemoaning my inability to find my first victory; for a bit of thought, I decided as a lark to take on Pacifism (partly to get a few ideas on movement). Got lucky with some well-timed berserk packs, and even luckier with some invincibilities. Snuck around some of the more annoying enemies, tricked a few into blowing themselves up with barrels, got a lot of caves in the lower levels (lured a few demons into lava pits, out-ran the arachnotrons, and bypassed one with a homing phase device) and only about two wide-open levels (remember those berserks? Also dived into the Cathedral on one of those because it was the safer staircase). Evaded all the revenants and mancubi I found and got to the bottom; threw down the starting nuke and that was that.
Even snaffed a couple of speedrun medals into the bargain that I had no thought of ever getting near to.
:D
Entirely predictable that I'd find a firestorm mod on a run where it's completely pointless, of course...
So, the important thing... what did I learn from this? Well, the main thing is that trying to kill everything is only going to get me killed. Also that running is surprisingly handy for dodging arachnotron shots; that sometimes it's more useful to have the enemies kill each other than doing it myself; that if I avoid mancubi, revenants and archviles then I'll probably win comfortably; and that sometimes, it all just comes down to plain dumb luck.

Okay, this was just funny. Figured I'd give it a pop just to see how it played out and give me some ideas for Berserk runs, and... well. Check the other forum for details...

« on: November 19, 2011, 11:35 »THIS... so much.Nethack might have called this Lessons Learned The Hard Way once upon a time. :p "Yeah, I'm not commaing it across the Armory to get the stuff round the back of the lab, there's too much leftover ammo in the middle of the map and it'll take forever. I'll just hold left..." *gets eaten in the back by the last lost soul I missed*
Fun fact: It's entirely possible to get killed in a game where your HP is locked at 100... by doing exactly this. The game is running so fast that the locking program can't keep up when you do this, and Locking Programs are supposed to be so ultra-fast that this can't happen. In other words, use comma for that sort of thing.

I don't gift-drop much unless I'm particularly desperate; it's phenomenally difficult to get out of the very bad habit of just trying to run up and smack things in the face. (The number one thing I need to learn in this game - discretion. My biggest error is usually underestimating how badly something will hurt me ("well, that demon took 9% health off me last time and I've got 20% left so I should be alright for one more hit... right?"), and going for one more shot or reload rather than using medpacks.) Moving is one thing I'm trying to learn to do properly; carelessly racing across a level by holding the arrow key is getting me imped far too often. Dodging is a pain in the ass. And I've started using the occasional tactic run to run up to things, but still not that effectively yet.
Hell deaths mostly just tend to be down to bad planning, I think. Like I said, decent armor is one thing I really haven't got the hang of, and I've yet to cook up something that doesn't get me wiped out by mancubi and revenants as soon as I see them. Being outrun by archviles is also a big problem on AoB runs (and a marginally lesser problem on others, but archviles are still the main source of hell death).
AoB runs are so far all built on Marine Bru-Bad-Bru-Ber-Iro-MVm, then maybe aiming for WK after that to try and mod up something; I've never quite decided whether to swap the Bru and Bad at the start (the knockback from sergeants is hellish in the early game; I've never found throwing knives at them effective enough to bother with). As a Marine I could probably stand to ditch the Iro and replace it with something more useful (probably another Bru). I usually skip the Arena in favour of an easier run at the Chained Court, and then go knife-chainsaw-Longinus. If I've got an envirosuit on me I'll always take on the Armory; the Shambler is incredibly easy if you've got good health, Ber and a chainsaw (on HNTR, the only real difficulty there is approaching the arachnotrons).
All other runs - particularly non-challenge - tend to rely mainly on shotguns (modding up a tactial shotgun is usually my highest priority for any such game), for which I aim at MAD (usually Bad-Rel-Rel-SM-TaN or such). If I'm undecided, I'll go Bad-Iro-Tan-Iro-Tan-Iro-MSv, which is probably actually crap. (I pretty much exclusively play Marines.)

Discussion / Nub question - where abouts should I be by now?

(First post, so tell me if I've screwed up by putting this in the wrong place or asking something that's covered in a guide already, or something.)
So I first found DoomRL a while back, but I've got really into it as of 0.9.9.4. (I love Nethack to bits, and this game is a neat variation of the mechanics with a completely different play style. I like it.) Done a bit of wandering around, and made my way down to the depths a few times, but I don't quite seem to be able to make that final push to an actual win yet. (Mancubi and revenants destroy me too low down, and I haven't yet found a decent armor setup.)
The Nethacker in me has me going for 100% kills on every level, which I'm not sure is the right way forward. (It also has me trying to batter things with big swords, which is probably why my best runs so far have been AoB.)
Notes on current progress:
ITYD: 3 deaths and a max of level 17 on one "ignore everything and bolt to the Hellgate for the Gatekeeper Bronze" run.
HNTR: 219 deaths (almost all first-three-level AoBs) and a max of level 22; the AoB run of my life, but taking a look at the Mortuary on a run without the City Of Skulls was probably an error. (AoB runs have two big hates: arachnotrons and arch-viles. Yeah.) Also had an AoB level 21 run that got careless in the Spider's Lair.
HMP: 190 deaths (I started playing the game on this difficulty, which probably wasn't smart) and a max level of 18; just a plain ol' run that eventually got arch-viled to death.
UV: 25 deaths and a max level of 14; going for the Arena Silver, I eventually found (from a brief browse around the forums) that AoMC was the way to go. A couple of lucky vaults got me a gatling gun before I went in and the rest was history - until I ran out of ammo and armor and got arch-viled. Again.
N!: Not yet.
Badges: Check the sig. The platinum was Armorer.
Medals: Hell Champion, Hell Armorer, and UAC Bronze and Gold (I've read elsewhere that the Silver doesn't stack. It really should; I get the argument for why it doesn't, but... ugh.)
Challenges: Done most of the Bronze badge challenges except Hunter and Masochist. Made level 17 on Marksman and 21 on Shottyman (both HNTR).
So yeah. Any thoughts or advice on how to make the big push towards the end to finally get my first win under my belt?
