The closest we had to a "low-light" situation was when the Angel of Darkness (or something like that -- it existed in 0.9.8.x) was in action.  It was removed in 0.9.9, but I wasn't around to hear why.

As far as I know, nobody ever played it.

As for the idea, it sounds like something you can add to DoomRL 2. As for vanilla - it may certainly be implemented without changing the gameplay too much in the form of the dark rooms (grues optional), but as for the lampstands - probably not. They would take too much room (since roguelikes have a basic minimal size of one tile an object can occupy in the game world), and would probably just get in the way a action.

Discussion / Re: Master Traits

Army of Dead: a must have for a shotgun run, really. You need to shoot hell knights about three times with a double shotgun from minimal distance to put them down, and about five or six times for barons without this trait. And God help you if they are wearing armor. This trait, however, cuts down the number of required shots significantly.

Gun Kata: kind of OK, I guess. Gives you an edge over a pack of lost souls, as well as single tanks like archnotrones, knights and barons. Won't save you from viles, revenants and mancubi, though. Quite effective against Cybie.

Ammochain: this one is horribly horribly overpowered. This plus a modded plasmagun is nearly an instant win on any difficulty.

Cateye: I can't say I ever took this trait, because I never go for EE. But I suppose it's quite useful.

Fireangel: again, never really took it, but it sounds kind of not useful.

Blademaster and Vampyre: of this two, Vampyre is definitely more useful. Free health from weaker foes is great, and combined with Badass it allows you to regularly have health above the normal 100% limit. Blademaster, on the other hand, gives you an advantage over a pack of lost souls only. Quite dull, really.

Don't forget "I play AoP and I don't want to waste a medpack" thing.

But yes, such a massage would be nice, considering that levers like this have global effects.

OK, now we just need a thread to discuss what "doomish" is.

It seems that this prevention mechanism was removed, than.

IMHO, vanilla actually has all the monsters it needs, really. Ao100, however, would really benefit from a bigger variety of adversaries - because battling through packs of the same old viles gets boring around floor 50. Maybe some miniboss type of monsters should be implemented, which will really break the monotony. Maybe than more people will actually finish Ao100.

So... what... you'd be OK with the Jackhammer if only Kornel were to change its name to "automatic shotgun" and remove all references to the Pancor Corporation, I take it? Seriously, that's a pretty dumb notion...

Funnily enough yes, I consider such a variant to be better. Seems to be working fine for Assault Shotgun, doesn't it? But of course, this is all subjective.

Congratulations on your rather impressive victory!

Btw, am I first person who earned diamond badge, ever ?
O

Nope. There's this guy called Dervis. He's got, like, 10 of them or so.

Personally, I'm against this idea, too. I see two major cons:

1) A monster like this would probably be in conflict with the rest of the game's content. DoomRL is quite an abstract game (for example, we have a trait that literally gives you ammo out of air). Security officer, on the other hand, is a detailed monster - adding him would break the level of abstraction the rest of the content operates on. Incidentally, I didn't like the inclusion of Pancor Jackhammer into the game as well, for the same reason.

2) Doesn't sound quite doomish enough (which is the reason we don't have assault rifles and the like in the game)

So, in my opinion, such ideas are excellent meat for mods, but do not fit well into vanilla.

Thanks for the answers.

Vampyre would seem to be a given, wouldn't it? I mean, I haven't seen many ranged blood-drinking (scary thought o_O)

Then my Alucard build for the Ao100 is kind of useless now. Oh well.

As for nuking the spawn items: since they spawn after you nuke the level, they are not effected. The same goes for the enemies: in earlier versions, nuking a level with a pain elemental would result in some lost souls still remaining after the blast. I don't know if it was fixed in 0.9.9.

Hi everyone. I've lurked on this forums for quite some time, but the release of the new version finally pushed me to register. The new version is fantastic. Good job, Kornel!

Anyway, I decided to share my latest AoB endeavor:

He was an Angel of Berserk!

Before him 49 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 40 of those were killed.
1 of those was killed by something unknown.
1 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
And 4 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!
Is he immortal? 3 souls claim to have killed him...
2 killed the bastard and survived.
1 showed that it can outsmart hell itself.

--------------------------------------------------------------

I got kind of lucky with the Mortuary. I found an inv. globe right before the entrance, and I also had a nuke with me. Total obliteration of viles ensued. Unfortunately, nuking the Mortuary does not grant you the golden reaper badge, it seems.

Vampyre turned out to be an awesome trait, but I have a question: does it give you health for ranged kills? 'Cause  it's description is kind of vague.
