Well, I cleared the Chained Court a lot easier this time, though the arena master and the formers still whopped me pretty good.  I camped out in the central area to kill all the hell knights and a lot of the formers, then I grabbed both berserk packs and the chainsaw for my main attack run.  The arena master blew up one of the agility mod packs...

Level 7 was just a very painful experience.  I saw a supercharge thanks to intuition, so I wanted to avoid using my large medpacks for healing.  Packs of demons in melee and a group of wandering hell knights (one of which grabbed a damaged blue armor that I dumped) made it so I had to use a couple of them.  There was this little room blocked by acid that I wanted to check out, so I blew a hole in the wall, and saw a dangerous lever.  For most people, this would be the time to move on, but I'm not most people.  Absolutely nothing good could have come of this; I was already almost dead, so lava and even acid might have killed me before I even left the little room.  It spawned a pack of enemies, and I retreated towards the supercharge that I still hadn't picked up (the powerup across the room), but I didn't even come close to making it.

I think I'll go back to my trusty Vampyre build...

I decided to start fresh, and I wanted to try something new.  I was going to try out Blademaster, but I wanted ranged weapons as backup rather than shotguns, so I started off with Eagle Eye.  Combined with snagging two levels of Intuition, this meant I wasn't yet a killing machine.

I ran out of berserk as the arena master was still several tiles away and for some reason I decided that I could take him. "Oh, I can survive one shot at about half health."  Not even close (not to mention I would get hit a lot more than once; this would have been a great time to actually use a rocket launcher, but I never think of it.).  I really don't like the shorter power-up time for non-Marines.  It always sneaks up on me and leaves me in bad situations.  And not starting the game off with Badass means shotguns were knocking me around, plus that and being a Scout left me with a lot less health than I'm used to.  I thought this would be a good run, too, because I lucked out with lots of early large med-packs and a decent amount of armors that weren't... worn-in.

Yes, victory and stupid death.  Well... I think you can see from my equipment and the message log what happened here.  Clearly I did not know how the lava element actually works.  Though I have my doubts that I would have been able to beat the improved JC, the real loss here was that I brought spidey down to mortally wounded without taking damage, just to show that I could.  A regular victory and a Mastermind's Brain was just bullets away.

Hell's Arena and, to a lesser extent, the Chained Court were unnecessary and painful, but if you think I'll just skip a special level you don't know me very well :) (exceptions for the Wall and Cathedral of course).  The trait detour to the two Whizkid levels was necessary to trick out my pistol (I pretty much just slapped any non-agility mod on them), though the lack of Eagle Eye early on actually made me miss enough to really frustrate me at times.  The spare armors in my inventory got used very rarely; I heard about the idea of power-modded tactical armor, and after trying it I fell in love with it.  I had all I needed to make the gravity boots as soon as I got the nano pack, but I waited a little while to see if I could find some plasteel boots which never showed up.  City of Skulls wouldn't have been possible without those boots, because I would have gotten swarmed I'll bet (I killed the initial swarm with my arena master's staff and small medpacks) - it took a whole lot of ammo though.

Gravity boots, Sharpshooter, and ammo chains meant I was an absolute speed demon, and the end game was extremely easy.  Thanks to all the ammo chains I ended up getting (4 total) I didn't have to worry about ammo, either.  The Anti-Freak Jackal was a decent find I guess.  In reality, I wanted to avoid destroying items and barrels close to items, shooting enemies that were against walls could knock them towards me sometimes, and I sometimes blew myself up when in melee range, so the explosions were sometimes annoying.  It also had to be reloaded almost twice as often and took longer to do so, and it didn't fire as quickly due to my regular pistol's technical mod.  I didn't bother calculating the DPS, so my regular modded pistol might have actually been superior.

I used my modded pistol against the Mastermind just because I'm hardcore.  I was so quick that pillar dancing against the Mastermind was trivial, but then came my little mishap.  After mortally wounding spidey, I overcharged the nuclear plasma rifle, waited a long time to use my lava element, took a head start towards where the stairs would be, and used up my 9 turns of invulnerability awfully quick.

This was actually completed in the release candidate version, identical to the actual release.

I think my topic title is a good summary of what I'd like to discuss: any attempt at a conqueror run is pretty much forced to do a melee build, unless you're just hoping for some lucky drops or planning a knife throwing fight (which also forces Hellrunner most likely).  Now, I don't mind Vampyre builds and melee in general, but I like mixing things up rather than picking the same traits each game.  I also enjoy killing everything and doing all the special levels.  For a regular, non-challenge game, every other special level is doable by pretty much any build, though obviously some builds have an easier time with certain levels.  The Unholy Cathedral is the one level that forces a certain build, and the funny thing is, it's also one of the easier special levels if you do have an all-out melee build.  I mean, it says something that there's a diamond badge for doing the level without Brute.

So what would I suggest?  Well, I don't have a concrete idea, but I'm thinking maybe a new artifact that spawns in an earlier special level that does something (maybe allowing some ranged combat, or maybe doing something to temporarily boost your melee combat for the purposes of fighting with the angel so you can do it without Brute), like how the arena master staff allows one to clear the vaults without getting some lucky phases.  It's also sort of like how the arena gives you the rocket launcher and rockets that you need to clear the Wall.  I think a conqueror run should build upon itself, giving you what you need to clear the later special levels, even if it won't make it easy.  This is generally the case, with the exception of the Unholy Cathedral (but the guaranteed chainsaw certainly helps for the melee build).

What are your opinions on the matter?  Is it okay that not every build can clear the Unholy Cathedral?

Discussion / I just had a "Eureka!" moment.

I remember when I would first do the Chained Court (with arena beaten) I would just grab the chainsaw and run out and kill some stuff.  I always figured that was a good way to do things, until I read one time about grabbing one of the berserk packs as well, to guarantee that my berserk would last long enough.  After that moment, I started having a lot more success in the Chained Court.  However, in attempt to move on to HMP, and even sometimes on HNTR in the slightly harder betas, I would kill the arena master but end up stranded outside with all the cacodemons or hell knights still alive and wandering around who knows where, and I would often be almost dead.  Since there's one remaining berserk pack just begging to heal me, I would save my medkits and usually die.

Then it clicked.  Why don't I kill those four bastards before I go after the arena master?  With this strategy I was able to kill the four hell knights, beat the arena master, and even clear out a lot of the formers on HMP before running out of berserk.  It took a couple of small medkits because I probably should have started off with green armor while all the formers were blasting me (I've never actually done the math on this), but now rather than having the four hell knights to worry about without any berserk, I just have to kill the straggling formers, which easily fall to my regular weapons.

I have to say, I felt rather proud about arriving at this strategy change on my own.  I feel like I'm understanding DoomRL more and more every day.  Do you guys have any similar moments you'd like to share for posterity?

I was just going to go for a simple AoB win (while still trying for 100% kills because that's how I roll).  However, when I stumbled upon the stairs to the Wall, I had red armor, a couple of blue armors in decent shape, about 8 large med-packs and a couple of small ones, 4 or 5 phase devices, and 2 homing phase devices, plus I already had Berserker.  I thought it would be easy, because I'm dumb that way.  So I step into the Wall, and start using phase devices.  It took several, but eventually I get on the other side of the wall... right in the middle of the horde.  The good news was they were shooting each other up a bit.  The bad news was they were shooting me up a whole lot.  I thought about going into the side room, but they had already blown holes everywhere in there just a couple of turns in.  My red armor didn't last long, and it got to the point where I was using a large med-pack turn after turn in order to stay alive.  I'm not one to give up, so I just died in between med-packs, sitting there helplessly.

What I should have done, I think, was warp over, use my staff, use a small med-pack, and repeat.  That would have knocked around half of their health away, and if I wanted to I could have even dug into my large med-packs to continue exploding them until they died.  It probably would have been a lot more effective; trying to melee them was borderline impossible, because any of them that I got in melee range would be blown away by the splash damage of their allies.  Brick Silver seems awfully luck-dependent for a silver badge.

And I was on my best run yet (still had 100% kills, too).  I went ahead and snagged the Trigun from the Vaults in case I ever hit any invulnerability globes in the later levels (and in case I didn't get a nuke and wanted to try for a full win).  Very next level, I hit a horde of mancubi and arch-viles, which I kill fairly easily by hiding behind a door and shooting my super shotgun blindly.  Then on the right side of the same level I hit another horde of mancubi and arch-viles, but they blow up the doors and walls, forcing me into a straight up fight.  Good thing I snagged about 5 stacks of cells in the Vaults.  I pull out my BFG and open fire.  The horde is almost eliminated, but I'm pretty banged up myself; then I fire with insufficient cells and get hammered some more, leaving me almost dead.  I decided to phase out of there instead of healing.  But I died instantly due to a lone revenant on the left side of the map (though looking at the mortem, he might have hit a napalm barrel; still sucks).  I also had a pretty good armor supply until this level; those mancubi and arch-viles tore through my red armor like it was paper.

In Hell's Armory, the biggest problem I have is killing those arachnotrons in the small rooms without getting torn to shreds.  I just lost a HMP run to the room with the arachnotron and the cacodemon.  So I wonder if you guys have a good strategy for taking them out.

Something I was thinking, instead of opening the door, shoot the door open from the side of the building, hide around the corner, and corner shoot them to death once the arachnotrons get in the hallway.  Would that work well?

So last night I decided that HNTR was getting to be a little bit boring for me, and I played a couple of HMP games.  Quite simply, I got my ass kicked.  Even on Phobos Base Entry, the former humans were filling me with bullets.  Then on level 2 there were tons of enemies, including former captains.  I managed to get to Hell's Arena only one time, where I only managed to get to the second round before I got ambushed by cacodemons and died.

Does anyone have some advice for me on how to transition up to HMP?

The good news is, I got my 26th bronze badge.  The bad news is, I was so close to winning!

I can't remember if I had 100% kills up until now, but doing a rough count of the amount of enemies remaining in the mortuary, I'd say the answer is no.  I started off the mortuary with a quick kill on one of the archviles.  So far so good.  I move further left, and start killing some things.  I then come up with the idea to use my missile launcher, to really wreck some stuff.  But wait! I don't get my entrenchment benefits!  And so I started slowly getting torn up, including my armor.  I should have just stuck with the nanofiber armor, since I wouldn't be moving much and that one less protection point is probably worth not having to deal with armor replacement.  I'm pretty sure I could have cleared the mortuary out if I had just been thinking a little harder - I had a decent amount of healing items, and the supercharges would help me out a lot.  Unfortunately that's not how it turned out.

The gatling gun was probably not the best thing to assemble for AoMC; against a long line of enemies it's great, but against a single foe it just bleeds ammo.  It also needs pretty rapid reloading with the speed it burns through those 52 rounds.  However, I didn't really have much choice, because I don't think I ever saw an agility mod until level 22 when I completed my hyperblaster (though I guess I could have just modded the chaingun instead of assembling).  Entrenchment is nice, but it's not very ammo efficient.  There was a point where I was down to about half a stack of 10mm ammo and two plasma stacks, but thankfully I met a squad of former captains that refilled my inventory.

So... I guess I have to move on to silver badges now.  Or I could play a HMP game.  Hmm.

For example, the elephant gun is listed as 2P, with the number before the mod, whereas on weapons it would read P2.  I just had a bit of a freakout when I double checked the hyperblaster recipe after adding the second technical mod and saw A2T, before I realized what the deal was.  It's not really a big deal, but consistency would prevent confusion.

This challenge was a lot harder than I imagined it would be, but that may be because I fell back into my "kill everything" mood for a bit.  Only about 6 of floors in, and my reckless playstyle left me with no medkits.  Though my first mistake was taking Badass, as if I completely forgot what I was doing.  I managed to find a few more medkits as I went, but I had to play cautiously.  Entering level 10, I was about dead already, and there were also hell knights and cacodemons and a whole lot of imps to deal with.  I managed to overcome the level with 8% health remaining, though I had a homing phase device which I used to skip over floor 11, a demon cave which I might have been able to overcome.  Wasn't going to risk it though.

One bronze badge left to go, Destroyer Bronze.

It sort of feels like I'm spamming with all my bronze badge mortems here so suddenly...

I was almost positive I'd be able to win with this one.  Except I started right next to two arch-viles and a mancubus on floor 23.  I had used my last phase device on the last floor to escape, so I was left with just my wits and some boxes to attempt my getaway.  I had but two floors left, and I had a nuke with the cyberdemon's name on it.  I had all those large health packs sitting in my inventory, but I can't really sit around and heal when there's plasma and fire killing me. Drats, the vile got me...  2 bronzes to go; this was definitely the one I was most afraid of.  I hate reviving enemies.

As I entered level 22, an arch-vile and the stairs to the Mortuary were in sight almost right away.  I guess I shouldn't have jumped at the chance to leave the level right away.  I thought I'd just heal and hug the wall to one of the staircases, but it didn't work at all.  Oh well, another bronze bites the dust.

Ever since a glitch robbed me of my Berserker Gold Badge after a lucky Butcher's Cleaver on level 2, I haven't been able to do a good AoB run.  So I decided I would just run through to get my Berserker Bronze.

If I had healed rather than approaching the cacodemon with low health, I could have easily beaten the Hellgate, running past the Bruiser Brothers if necessary, and gotten Berserker Silver.  But there will be a day for that.  4 bronzes remain (Inquisitor, Quartermaster, Hunter, Destroyer).
