I read one of 2Dev's mortems a long time ago, he mentioned damageless N! run up to UC to get Dragonslayer to drop every time. I figured this would be a great way to experiment with the Dragonslayer so I was trying to reproduce this.

Since getting all the way to UC damageless on standard N! is out of my league, I tested this with AoOC instead and I managed to get "damageless 100%" by clearing out a pain elemental cave right before UC. I also took under 50 damage in another attempt on the first floor of AoOC, and took *no* damage on UC (basically just grabbed two invulnerability globes right before and ran straight to the AoD). The former dropped an Azrael's Scythe, the latter dropped the Longinus Spear. No Dragonslayer. It may be restricted to standard games =(

Thanks for the replies! That explains a lot. I take it rocket jumping is fine when going for Gatekeeper badge? I'm not sure if "no damage" includes self-inflicted damage.

So I've been hearing about rocket jumping to skip the ambush portion of the anomaly, but I can't figure out just how you'e supposed to do it. Last time I tried it I was boosted and I think I rocket jumped with a green armor. I did this close to the trigger for the ambush and I just ran into the door.. woops

I figured next time I'll shoot some rockets to make sure the door at the other end of the room is open, but here's my question: is it possible to avoid activating the ambush by rocket jumping correctly?

The moment I saw the Jackhammer and I wasn't surrounded by any enemies that floor was done, I just made sure to wipe the floor clear before moving on. The game wasn't finished though! On level 2 I got a shielded armor which has to be one of the best armors for mitigating damage on a crappy spawn: just hug the enemies and laugh at their melee damage. It's also indestructible so I can always fall back to it if things go south. On level 3 I got the hell staff and by then the game was basically telling me to win. Anytime I was ambushed if I couldn't go into melee range to abuse the 90% damage reduction on the shielded armor I could always hell staff out of the way.

Jackhammer + MAD was very, very satisfying to use on Arch Viles and Barons, they would melt in 2-3 hits while getting launched to the next room.

The level right before SM, I spawned surrounded by 4 Arch Viles with Barons and Mancubi. I had a homing phase device as a backup plan if everything else failed, but the game was basically telling me to get the Shottyman badges by putting an invulnerability globe next to me.

Ridiculous luck aside, I think AoSh is actually made easier by AoOC overall. Just enough levels to get a mastery, and you only need to get lucky for a few floors in some way or form to make sure you stay over 80% kills. Oh yeah, and EXACTLY 80% kills?! Maybe I should just go and win the lottery already x)

Ah, there's the 0.64s vs 0.63s difference explained.

I know I'm not crazy xD it would take a while, but non-running move actions would let me create distance from the AoD after several tiles. As a rough estimate I made sure to have at least 2 tiles of distance before throwing a knife. I never got hit.


Though this is probably considered cheesing the diamond badge, I'm glad there's some discussion on it. :D I still feel kinda bad I wasnt around for 9.9.7 testing, now I feel like I would have at least helped in ironing out badge requirements. :(

I have no idea how you did it in less than half an hour with just one bulked knife, and not even SoBx2....
Also for some stupid reason my bulked knife got destroyed when I killed AoD with the final throw... Imagine that...

Naturally entering the next level meant almost an instant death.

PS : The wiki needs fixing. Outrunning an angel of death with 2 HR and +10% from scout ability, should not be possible if he does indeed have 150% speed.

I was circling inside the demon room for the most part. There's no need to do laps outside the cathedral. I considered doing that at first but I figured if you outran the AoD, why not just do the same in a smaller space? Just don't get too greedy and attack him when he's too close.

I definitely outran him with Scout class + 2xHR, I wasn't wearing armor though.

Hmm, you're probably right.. some people may want to do AoOC+AoMC after all :P I haven't given this too much thought admittedly. Maybe the AoD could get "enraged" after repeated ranged knife throw attacks and something bad happens? :o)

I guess this is a more philosophical thing. Should the hardest badges have a strict luck requirement? Should they just be a puzzle for the player to figure out? (Dragonslayer is one of these) Or should they be based on skill as much as a roguelike would allow with all the random elements?

I think it should be changed, personally. Removing AoOC from the choices after AoMC should be enough. This way, using AoOC would be too impractical as a shortcut to attempt Longinus Diamond, and if they want to use AoMC they have to learn a sound strategy for reaching the later levels first.

How did you deal with the souls and demons, though?

You can kill the souls in one hit with the combat knife (not sure if it requires bulk mod or not, actually), so as long as you deal with 1 at a time you're good.

The demons took a lava bath outside :-)

I unlocked AoOC, and I've read about using throwing knives to kill the AoD on max carnage, so I figured why not just dual angel? On my first try I had a bulk mod and the red stairs to the Unholy Cathedral in plain sight. Without a bulk mod I have no idea just how long it would take.

Not much else to say, I tried to continue but barely as I was starting I got annihilated by a former sergeant sneaking behind a corner. I got launched into the middle of a lava river.. x)

Impressive. Did you choose to take a level in IRO at the end, or was this a slip of the finger?
The only times I (accidentally) took IRO on a BER build, it spelled heaps o' trouble...

Thanks :3 I got pretty decent at doing melee runs since picking up the Dragonslayer has been such a mystery, I had to keep attempting them lol

At that point, I could have upgraded anything, and I figured since I had so many large medpacks near the end, it would have good synergy with Ironman. It'd probably not be worth it unless I got at least 2-3 in Ironman, but I was just experimenting basically. If I had gotten Ironman before I got MBm or even Int it would almost be suicide though!

Any enemy that takes sufficient damage gets gibbed.  Gibbed enemies leave no corpse and drop no items and, in the case of Pain Elementals, release no Lost Souls.  The Longinus Spear does so much damage that it frequently gibs smaller enemies, especially when you're berserk.

Oh wow, thanks for clearing that up, I guess I'll keep the chainsaw next time. Pain elementals are valuable Berserk refills..

Starting from an (almost) fresh player data. It was fun wandering into areas I've never seen before. It was my first time seeing Limbo and I almost died trying to clear it, but more importantly I grabbed the nuclear BFG which let me get to JC. I got this run in like my 4th attempt, I'm not sure if it's just me still remembering how to handle the challenge, or it got easier in 0.9.9.7 after the changes.

I've never seen Mt. Erebus either, but thankfully it doesn't change that much from the Lava Pits (are pain elementals that don't summon lost souls on death intentional? It almost crippled my MBm build).

I really want to hunt for more diamond badges but I don't quite grasp the strategy on most of them yet, at least for those that aren't mostly luck based anyway. I could probably do Marksman/Shottyman Diamond next, just need to learn what are the best builds for doing that. However, seeing the nightmare monsters appearing in the later levels on N!, I can see why they'd be diamond badges.. x)

Goddamn, any tips for going damageless? Aside from lots of blindfiring and patient corner shooting, what else should one keep in mind for areas like Anomaly, Babel and Dis? Is damageless AoMC significantly easier than a standard game?

 720 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 668 of those were killed.
 5 of those were killed by something unknown.
 6 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
 And 16 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

Clearing UC, even on N! is surprisingly consistent. Naturally you still need berserker trait to even stand a chance while exchanging hits, but if you have level 1 HR + Scout it's easy to squeeze in free hits on the AoD. With 1 HR, Scout and green armor I find that I can get consecutive free hits the most while berserked by making the AoD fall into a pattern of 1. Take steps back until he steps along with you twice in a row 2. Hit him (you shouldn't get hit at this point) 3. Back to 1. It seems finicky with other armors equipped but even with a red armor you can score free hits (and if you have a red armor you can afford to take more hits anyway). The drawback of this approach is that you're almost guaranteed to run out of berserk time by the next level, but who cares, you have the longinus spear! Usually I only need some type of armor and 1 large med-pack to do UC with the combat knife. If you have a bulk/power mod I honestly would save it for a red armor.

It's really hard to decide on getting Int before or after getting MBm though, by going this route I had to get lucky a few times running into powerups, but thanks to getting the master trait first it helped me clear some nasty spawn points as I entered a level, where I'm not so sure even Int2 would have helped. Also, it helped me to go for offensive traits earlier so that there's less situations where I'm forced to retreat from enemies and lower my kill %.

As you can see I got 94%, but that was inflated by a pain elemental cave, but you can just play carefully and get >80% without pain elementals. I had blademaster by the time I could enter the mortuary, but I didn't need to go there to get Daredevil Diamond, so I passed. :)

This is probably one of the easier diamond badges (or less luck dependent). It's definitely a fun challenge, and also good practice for dealing with tough monsters on N! and UC right away. I did die a lot, but 90% of the deaths were in the first level or right after UC if I ran out of health packs.
