Pretty much the same.Except that you can expect lvl4 or lvl5 after finishing first level.
If you have found armor/invul/took Tan than it's easy if not be ready to burn through medpacks, as he has almost twice more(500 vs 290) hp than on M.

Managed to beat it, then proceeded to rush through the game, but I neglected to maintain at least 80% kills to get Daredevil Diamond, oops.

I was testing this mode, and I noticed that you start right where UC is available, so my first thought was to try a melee build. I was surprised at how very little luck is involved, the starting equipment lets you obliterate the first level with ease on medium difficulty at least, and you're already level 3 before the first level is done. It seems you can do UC consistently as long as you grab an armor and keep your initial large health packs, and more often than not you end up with more than that. I got some funny badges along the way, like Aurora Badge on probably the last mode I would expect to get it. Once you grab the Longinus spear it's pretty smooth sailing, though having Enviroboots drop definitely helped since I could not find an envirosuit nor could I assemble decent enough boots before the lava pits.

I wonder how UC would be done on N! though.. I figure in the worst case scenario you'd be dying so often you'll eventually run into really lucky starts and find yourself dueling the AoD with an invulnerability and berserk pack or something to that effect. I feel I'm abusing melee a lot, but I guess in this case there's not much choice aside from a melee build if you want to do UC immediately. xD

EDIT: Now that I think about it, this mode might be an easier AoB, since the moment you clear UC even on N!, it's pretty much a race to the finish, except you skip all the nasty parts at the beginning.

Ah, that's quite the bummer. I was mixing up derivative games (like Doom for Android) and straight up using Doom IP, it seems they are treated quite differently. I imagine then the only choice would be to pay for a license to use their IP. Have you tried speaking with with ZeniMax Media to get an idea of how much money we are talking about? If the amount is not exorbitant, and this is something you would love to do eventually.. I can see myself chipping in!

I have no idea if there's any distinction from a small group of indie developers for a text-based game or Microsoft Studios, though. :P If obtaining such a license would be unreasonably expensive, the only other choice would be to replace all Doom IP with something else, which would not be very Doom-like! :(

I was thinking about it for a bit, and doomrl could be ported to a mobile platform like Android. While the key usage can range from minimal to extensive, I think the pace of DoomRL is appropriate for a mobile environment. Porting roguelikes to android is not unheard of, and there's in fact many attempts, though in my opinion any game that does not fit the "coffee break roguelike" paradigm is not appropriate for an Android port.

Menu navigation is already simple and painless, but I imagine the main challenge here would be maximizing usability of the UI given a small window size and a touchscreen. For example, items in your inventory could be highlighted in the touch-screen, and highlighting an item gives you the option of using it or dropping it. A full featured keyboard can be used, but this would leave roughly half the window size for the map, so maybe a smaller portion of the screen can be used in exchange for less keys/more touch-screen interaction.

Of course, if such a port was made, I would be glad to pay for it. Having the convenience of playing my favorite roguelike just about anywhere is well worth the $1.99 it might cost, or whatever it ends up being.

It's definitely not a trivial problem, but if there's a roguelike that can become a hit in the Android market, it would be this one. :)

EDIT: I forgot to add, I know nothing about Android application development, and I don't know if the language and/or libraries used to develop DoomRL are incompatible or not. Just wanted to throw this idea out there.

Congrats on Berserker Diamond!  :D  I've always preferred Vampyre over Blademaster, myself, so I'm impressed by anyone who can make this build work.  (I guess it's just a difference in playing style)

Oh, and I recently had a Malicious Blades build where I had Butcher's Cleaver and a Chainsword.  It was pretty awesome.  :)

OH, of course it makes sense to make use of Vampyre, especially when enemies are respawning all the time.. early levels would be harder without a doubt, but I imagine that being able to isolate a pile of corpses for a free health boost would play a big role in getting you past all the levels once you get the master trait.

I don't consider myself particularly good, but I've done a great deal of attempts of AoB in past versions to no avail (though a good chunk of these were during the version where berserk was bugged, to your horror/disadvantage), and now I've gotten this on roughly my fourth try. The scout class is, without a doubt, made for AoB on N!, which consists of doing a mad dash to the stairs while plowing through enemies and picking up what you run into.

I really like this for one simple reason: I can actually play this mode without fearing the early levels nearly as much, but if I'm feeling feisty I can go for more achievements and special levels where I would most likely have to push my luck. For the next attempts I'll probably stick around and try to get the items I need to do a full win, then Hell's Arena, so on so forth. Notice that the Cyberdemon literally spawned next to me in the top left, free Cyberdemon's head :)

I'm not even sure if even now with the new classes there is a viable build for AoB other than this. Are there other builds? Butcher's cleaver with malicious blades? lol

Out of frustration, I start-scummed for an unique, mostly because I kept making small mistakes around the beginning, and these usually got me killed before my character was more stable. I got the Grammaton Cleric Beretta, so I opted for a pistol build, it seems like a good thing to do in Ao100 anyway, and boy was it worth it. Level 2 intuition was all the defensive traits I needed well until the later levels, especially when I could have a pea-shooter that hits like a truck. What really saved my butt multiple times was having an ammo chain handy to eliminate the only drawback the Beretta had, I could burst fire everything and knock them away to safety and reload with reckless abandon. Even without the beretta, a pistol build would probably work very well anyway.

The nuclear plasma rifle seems to be one of the main things for an "Ao100 kit", and I ran into it around the 30-40's, allowing me to save massive amounts of ammo, and allowing me to dump the bulk mods I have been piling up, as well as putting EE/SoB to good use.

A Dragonslayer dropped, and I would have opted for grabbing it right there and then, but I'm sure you at least need to be berserk to even have a shot at grabbing it, so I had to leave it behind. :(

I ran into two Necro Armors, but they were obsolete already thanks to having cerberus armors and the Lava Armor. Speaking of cerberus armor, are you supposed to be able to mod the cerberus armor? I got a P mod on it somehow and I think assemblies typically can't be modded further. With that said, duelist cerberus armor with a P mod = one of the best armors in the game? O_o

At some point I wanted to try dualgunner with a Beretta and an energy pistol, but I got the parts way too late. It probably would be deadly too, and reloading wouldn't be too much of a problem as long as I take cover whenever the Beretta runs out. Thankfully, SoGx5 and SoBx5 with 0.1 firing speed with burst shots made short work of just about everything regardless. I still managed to get the energy pistol, which is much better on a per-shot basis and handles monsters that resist bullets a lot better. The Beretta still outperformed in burst fire, though.

I had no idea what the level with the "strange alarm" was all about. I almost died with all the Arch-Viles, and I'm pretty sure that was one of the few levels I had to ditch 100% monsters on. I think I encountered more Arch-Viles there than in the actual level where I got a complex of Arch-Viles.. O_o

The last level was brutal, since my Cerberus armor was on its last legs, and I spawn right next to roughly 7 Barons and 3 Arch-Viles. As tanky as I was, my main armor was the Lava Armor which doesn't protect against acid.. and I had to kill the Arch-Viles first if I wanted to make it to cover from the Barons and kill them off. I got to the 10% health range a few times, but thankfully technician traits save the day by allowing me to use large med packs in 0.1 seconds, and I managed to kill the Arch-Viles and found some cover. The rest was pretty easy and you can see me mess around with a firestorm rocket launcher, lol.

Right after I beat this challenge I got the Arch-Vile rank, hooray~

Number 2 is, I think, due to the limitations of this being an ASCII game. Firing occurs in a straight line, but a straight line is represented on computers by a repeating pattern of pixels that look like a line from a distance (see attached image). Since a map tile is the smallest unit DoomRL can work with, it tries to use them as "pixels" to represent a straight line, resulting in firing paths that should be valid, but go through a wall.


The granularity of the lines shouldn't be an issue. I don't know exactly how it's implemented in the source code, but the targeting probably uses some variation of this:

If this is the case, auto aim can just discard the line being generated if the current pixel is being drawn on a wall while running the algorithm. Afterwards, you could just default to manual targeting if there are no more possible targets. If there are other valid paths between the same two points (I'm not sure if this is possible in-game, actually), then it would be neat if it automatically tried to use those if it finds a wall with the first choice.

I personally find it annoying that auto aim locks on to a target with an invalid path, but I can see it being somewhat useful for manually adjusting your shot after starting auto aim (by moving the cursor around the target to get a clear shot).

That's actually kind of counterintuitive. Though modding assemblies in general sounds like it can be too much, I was sure I tried doing this mod using the first level of WK and it failed, then I tried doing it AGAIN after getting WK2, and what do you know, it worked. It seemed like normal behavior. Now I feel pretty bad for using unintended behavior to my advantage..

I really liked UV. The RNG gods were quite generous with mods, as I was able to pimp out my plasma rifle with all 5 mods shortly after getting WK2. Having a nanofiber red armor with an ADDITIONAL power mod was a lifesaver. The amount of abuse you need to take in this difficulty is phenomenal, even when I was taking my sweet time in UV and trying to be as cautious as possible. I had Ammochain so I could easily spam enemies to death from afar, but I limited myself to narrow corridors where I detected enemies, I thought the risk of exploding undiscovered barrels and precious supplies was too high.

I definitely wasn't confident enough to do a Conqueror run so I never got melee traits for the Unholy Cathedral, but considering the game gave me a nuke and invulnerability globe right before the Unholy Cathedral, it was basically begging me to nuke the place to oblivion and get free XP, so I did. ^_^

I was nearly unkillable by the time I maxed out Ironman, so the remainder of the levels were pretty easy. I tried to kill JC with my plasma rifle for fun, but I forgot to equip my gothic boots to avoid being blown away while chainfiring him, and by the time I realized this I had to run away and arm the nuke because BARONS EVERYWHERE JESUS CHRIST.

Fun game, now to figure out how to equip that Berserker's armor..
