Shotgun damage drops off quite a lot with distance, and with Cybie's armour (and the fact that armour blocks twice as much damage from shells) it's quite possible to run out if you're keeping your distance. There's nothing better than dancing around him just outside melee range and unloading double shotgun into his face, but dodgemaster is a must for that kind of tactic.

Pseudoedit: I see you did have dodgemaster - you should have kept at minimum range throughout the fight. With dodgemaster, when you move, the first projectile of every monster will target the square you were standing on before you moved, so if you move around him, Cybie can't really hit you (except for spalsh damage if you are standing in front of a pillar). All you need to do is move until he shoot, and then you are free to shoot at him until you see the message (and hear the sound) that he reloads his rocket launcher. Until that happens, he can't hurt you (except in melee), so you are safe. Once he reloads, just move around some more until he wastes his shot. Repeat. With a bit of practice, you'll be able to take him down without taking any damage soon.

The other basic strategy for taking him down is going melee, getting berserk, and just cutting him up with a chainsaw. The Berserker trait is a must in that case though.

Be careful with the fireproof armour though - while it increases your fire resistance, melee damage actually hurts more. And Cybie hits hard if you're not zerked. In any case, when it comes to shotguns, there's rarely such a thing as too much ammo.

Intuition makes things easier, and sometimes helps you to understand monster's behaviour, but will also (most of the time) prevent you the need to think. Not the best way of learning.

I'd say that undestanding monster's behaviour's quite important. Later on you'll learn to live without it and take more useful traits, but Int2 is still a very good choice if youre still learning.

Oh yeah - if you really want to transition to UV, you might want to practice with AoMC, which is easier than standard game, but it will give you an idea for how many enemies are there etc.

Yeah, I rarely touch mouse when playing.

You should stick with the easiest difficulties as first. It took me a long time to get the hang of HNTR, much less UV. And I've yet to beat the game on n!...

I'd recommend focusing on getting most of the bronze/silver badges. You'll be steadily getting better and before you know it, you'll take up your first diamond.

Off Topic / Re: Diablo 3

Yeah, I deliberately waited until enough time passes since release. Strangely, I never really liked Diablo II, while I loved the first one. The demo version of D3 convinced me, though I probably wouldn't like the game as much if I didn't play in hardcore mode.

So I came home drunk a few days ago and in the morning, I found out that I now have Diablo 3 =)

I've jumped straight into hardcore mode and yesterday finally kicked Diablo's ass on normal difficulty solo play, and I only buried one character (after a self-inflicted disconnect in act III).

I've decided to play with other people from now on, and I thought, rather than trying random strangers, I'd ask here to see if anyone is playing.

I like tiles in DoomRL, though I've learnt to play Dwarf Fortress in ASCII. Turns out it's not a big difference.

I like the first part of the suggestion, just not color-coded traits themselves. It looks like a mess to me.

I prefer to go with a scout to grab Int 1 early. Knowing where the health, invulnerabilities AND maps helps immensely, and the scout speed bonus is nice.

Great run!

I really wanted to and considered doing melee, but to be honest, I simply don't think I could take CC+ without Shottyman (I suppose I could play Shottyman for the first few levels then branch out to Vampyre, but that never occurred to me until I started typing this post). Still, Vampyre Mort is certainly something worth considering next time I'm playing a melee run (probably N! AoB, if I ever get good enough at Nightmare!).

Interesting. It too me a long time to beat CC+ reliably with anything other than a dedicated melee build. You just take the zerk packs, chainsaw, and rush the AM. The staff will take care of the lingering formers and the rest is a cleanup. (ok, yeah, you still have to deal with the barons, but it's usually not that big of a problem once the AM is down)

Wait, you got your first Conqueror Badge on UV? Awesome! Personally, when I first got Conqueror, I went with melee, since that negates the inventory management part, and since you have to do UC anyway...

Mortuary is awesome once you get the hang of it. I wholeheartedly recommend tackling it in melee (Vampyre, preferable). Knee-deep in the dead indeed.

Bug Reports / Re: [0.9.9.7G][WinXP] Game stops
« on: July 09, 2013, 04:30 »
I'm using XP too.
The only problems I get are when I tab. I sometimes lose keyboard input, or have weird things like this. Usually, tabbing again fixes it.
My game might also have stopped a few times, but it's rather rare, and I never have any problem if I don't use alt-tab.

Yeah, I've also experienced the issue after alt-tabbing back into the game, but it's not a big deal. A lot of games behave funky after alt-tabbing.

Hmm... I  don't like that, mainly because grenades are quite undoomy. I know there's a lot of stuff which wasn't in doom, but still...
