Well do we need this statistic at all? It is a bit discouraging/frustrating to see how many times a character died. This is also one of the statistics that does not have any real impact on ranks and achievements, so it is not really needed. I know this would be a bit radical change, but it would decrease urge to “savescum” or chat. Just my 2 cents.

In my opinion, a death counter provides the opposite: a sense of achievement, the knowledge that my current Doomguy had achieved something that so many before him had died in the attempt of.
It's really just a way of splitting up the overall marine count into deaths/suicides/self-nukes/wins and full-wins.
It's not needed as such, but the mortems just wouldn't be the same without it.

Yeah... besides, it's nice to know how many games you've played so far.

I see no need to remove the death listings.
I don't see how it encourages cheating/scumming.
I do see how it can increase morale - 'yes, I finally have one under the 'win' category!' or 'all right, now I'm 10/130 instead of 5/100! I am getting better!'.

I gotta admit, it is disheartening when I look at my 56 deaths for 1 win, and other people just like, "Oh, I won for the first time ever!" After 12 lives.
However it still makes that one win even more special... :D

You can view it the other way around - if you have too good win/death ratio, it means you are ready to start playing on a higher difficulty, so people with better death/win ratios probably don't live up to their true potential. Unless they are already plaing on nightmare, of course.

The more stats, the better as far as I'm concerned. The obit is your last character's entire 'life' and I enjoy looking back and seeing where I went wrong and where I excelled. Gimme more numbers!
