So I've been fighting my way through DoomRL again.

I've had a number of YASDs over the course, including one Army of the Dead marine who didn't pack an envirosuit for Mt Erebus and got cooked alive trying to fight the Lost Souls, and one guy who got the Bomb and the Lava Element, only to rush into a room with a Tracking Map on the level just before Spidey and get smacked into an exploding lava barrel by a Baron of Hell. My best run thus far was an intuition/shotgun scout who got all the way to Carmack before meeting the same fate as my Survivalist. That battle was interesting because I pulled the BFG on his ass out of his line of sight, and he retaliated by throwing some Barons my way which I had to deal with. With four major endgames under my belt and a string of failures, taking Carmack down and grabbing the full win seemed to be out of my reach.

Until now.

--------------------------------------------------------------

It began much like any other run. I determined that this run would be a Marine run, and I was debating with myself whether to go for Bullet Dance (which benefits from Son of a Gun and Son of a Bitch unlike other pistol builds), Army of the Dead (which ignores armor for your shotgunnery), Ammochain (the only Marine Master to work with HR and DM, and synergizes quite well with shotguns because of Son of a Bitch and Reloader), or Survivalist (which basically makes you a tank and makes your health packs work like Health Globes and Soul Spheres). My first time getting to Carmack was on a Survivalist build, and the main reason I died was because I didn't know how to handle the summons the bastard threw my way.

The shotgun was my workhorse weapon for much of the early game, with the chaingun from Hell's Arena seeing use for much of the early action as well through Episode 1. I managed to snag myself an envirosuit and a Combat Shotgun before coming to Phobos Lab, and it got put to use in the nukage section of the level. These days, I know to head to one corner of the area after downing the two big potions on either side and hitting the switch, which makes the trap with the Demons and the Shotgun Guys a lot more manageable to deal with. I assembled the Tactical Shotgun using the mods I found both in the Chained Court and in the Lab. Corner-shooting really is your best friend against the Bruiser Brothers with this thing -- all you really have to do is book it to the lower corner of the entryway and blast off until they die. I managed to kill them both with absolutely no damage to health or armor doing this, which was very damned nice.

Episode 2 saw me fighting Hellknights and the odd Baron of Hell in addition to the Imps, Demons and skulls. The thermonuclear bomb got added to my collection early on, and I did my best to hold on to it, since I knew that it would be vitally important. The Containment Area was a bastard of a battle which saw me snagging the Backpack and using the Missile Launcher against the first big scrum of Hellknights before doing corner-shooting with the tac shotgun against the rest of them. The City of Skulls was entered using a Berserk Pack, and it didn't take too long to clear out the initial scrum of Lost Souls before moving in and gunning down the rest.  The Halls of Carnage cost me a YAAM on my first major victory run, but unlike the other major run, I did not Jackhammer my way through it, and so I had plenty of time to murder every demon and zombie in my way and get to the BFG. I also waited a while for the lava to come and kill anything I missed before I moved on to the next area. I first pulled out the BFG against the Cyberdemon, but then switched to the Tactical Shotgun when he got close enough for melee. If I had found a Double Shotgun, I most likely would have used the puppy, but considering that I did not have Shottyman yet, it was basically a tanking fight, with me putting blast after blast into him, and then getting blasted in return as I reloaded the shotgun. By the time the bastard went down, most of my health packs were gone and so was pretty much all of my armor.

I went armorless for much of the first segment of Hell, and cornershooting was very much a necessity for survival, as well as scavenging whatever health I could find and making use of some green armor which didn't last very long. I also took to using rockets to open up areas that I would otherwise have had to slog through lava in order to reach. The area which saw me getting into decent armor again had a very tricky segment with an archvile, a lava barrel, and a red armor right next to it. I used my missile launcher, which I had gotten a Firestorm mod for on an earlier Hell level, on a Baron of Hell, then came back to find that some pissant zombie had gotten his hands on the armor, which pissed me off. After killing him, I grabbed up the armor, which thankfully didn't suffer too much damage, and put down the Vile before moving on. Some nasty encounters with a few Mancubi, spiders and Barons over the course of the next levels served to whittle the armor down bit by bit before my trip to Mt. Erebus.

Erebus is essentially the bigger, badder brother of the Lava Pits. I made sure to get an envirosuit ready before tackling the level, as I did not want a repeat of the YASD I suffered on that other big run through it. I blasted my way through the Lost Souls and Shotgun Guys before fighting the Hellknights. The Hellknights tore through my good armor before I put them down, and when the last ones appeared, I elected to use my missile launcher on them, which destroyed most of the stuff in the center with the exception of the Lava Armor. When the Lava Elemental appeared, out came the BFG for the smackdown. After putting on another envirosuit and grabbing the Lava Element, I got the hell out of there. The final level before Dis was one which saw me getting some very nice Red Armor, but where the walls were not destructible even with my missile launcher, and saw me fighting Imps, zombies, some Mancubi, a Baron of Hell that kept destroying my cover, and an Arachnotron that I killed with the missile launcher. Once everything was dead, I made sure to get rid of everything I didn't need, including the Arena Master's Staff, which didn't see use at all; a Homing Phase Device; and my Plasma Gun, which I unloaded for much needed cell power for the BFG before grabbing the Invincibility Sphere, marching into Dis and nuking the hell out of Spidey. And with that, after making a final inventory, it was on to the final showdown.

I kicked off the battle against Carmack by breaking out the missile launcher, which did a respectable amount of damage to him and his summons. But when the Lost Souls got too close, I whipped out the tac shotgun and blasted them to hell. Carmack started appearing next to me for some more shotgun action, but when the Cacos and then the Hellknights started appearing, I decided "screw this" and broke out the BFG, ignoring the Hellknights in favor of giving Carmack what for, relying on my health packs to keep myself alive and in health. My red armor was all but gone by the time Carmack began summoning Revenants, and after reloading the BFG, I let loose with one final blast which put him down for good. And just like that, it was over.

This run is not only my very first YAFW and my second YAAM run, but it's also the first time I've gotten the Conqueror Badge, which is gotten by clearing every special level on a given run.

Beating Carmack for the first time is definitely something I will remember for a while. I hope to get good enough to tackle the harder difficulties so I can start unlocking some more stuff such as the Angel of 100 and start playing around with some of the other big items of the game, such as Azrael's Scythe, the Dragon Slayer, and the more advanced assemblies.

So after several more tries in going through this game with shotgun builds, pistol builds, chaingun builds, and even the odd melee build or so, I decided to fire up a Technician. This time, I wanted to go for a melee build -- specifically, I wanted to go for a dual-chainsword Malicious Blades build, but I wasn't too sure if the RNG was going to cooperate. Well...

--------------------------------------------------------------

The first part of the game had me going primarily with the shotgun and blasting my opposition. The times when I could get hold of a Computer Map were damned nice because of the Technician's ability to treat every Computer Map as a Tracking Map. I bypassed Hell's Arena due to the fact that one, there are no mods to be found anywhere in that level, and two, I wasn't interested in trying to tackle that place as a meleeist. I picked up the two Combat Knives that I would use to create the Chainswords early on in the game (I think around Level 2 or so). The Chained Court saw me getting my hands on a chainsaw and my first taste of the Berserker Rage, which I used on the zombie soldiers and the Cacos of the level, but sadly, I only got a Power Mod and Tech Mod from the place. The Military Base was where I got my first plasma gun, off a Commando in the hidden room, as well as a Tracking Map that allowed me to plan out my battle with the bad guys in the final room. I had gotten a combat shotgun in the previous level, but upon getting another power mod, I decided to create a tactical shotgun. I also had a choice to make -- either stick to the melee build path, or go with more of an all-around build. In the end, I decided to stick to my guns (so to speak). I used the Power Mod I also got from the base on the Red Armor in the Phobos Anomaly, since I badly needed protection against the two Barons of Hell that were the bosses of the place. Since I didn't have Shottyman or Reloader, fighting the Barons was an ugly affair, and without the medpacks I'd picked up, I doubt I'd have survived, let alone killed them both.

The next episode saw me finding two more power mods. Since I had learned early on that trying to melee a Demon with an unmodded Combat Knife was not going to work without taking a ton of damage, upon acquiring the second major power mod, I went ahead and power-modded both of my knives. Level 12 saw me finding my first Bulk Mod, which I used to convert the first of my Combat Knives into my first Chainsword. I was still kinda wary about melee at this point, so I didn't go with the weapon as my primary until later. I passed by the Containment Area because one, I did not have a rocket launcher, two, because my prior experiences with the level told me that tac shotgun with my build versus a tonload of Hellknights would not end well for me, and three, the backpack is useless for a melee build. The Abyssal Plains were the battle that almost ended me -- unmodded tactical shotgun with no Reloader or Shottyman against the Agony Elemental, his Pain Elementals and a whole mess of Lost Souls was not a fun fight. Again, I primarily survived through use of my health packs, and when that wall behind me went down, I took the opportunity to get the living hell out of the central room and continue blasting the hell out of Mr. Agony Elemental until he finally went down, then finished off the rest of the baddies, including a Lost Soul that I had to hunt down. The next few levels were not a fun ride. Words cannot express how much I HATE acid and lava barrels, especially in areas with lots of lava and acid. There was one point where I had a Baron in the room with little armor and few health packs remaining, and a frigging Tristar Blaster in the room. I decided to grab the puppy and use it on the Baron. I very nearly killed myself, but I got him. I used the weapon sparingly from then on, primarily relying on the Plasma Gun against tough enemies, including another Commando and a frigging Arachnotron that I had to maneuver carefully in order to stay alive. At one point while I was engaging Plasma Guy, Little Spidey got into the door I was using as cover against it and into melee range. I decided "all right you little fucker", pulled out the Chainsword and ripped its little ass in two with one hit.

The Chainsword turned out to be a fun-as-hell weapon to use, especially when in Berserk mode. And when I got my hands on Malicious Blades, things got even better. I went into the Spider's Lair on an Invulnerability powerup and decided to take both my Chainsword and my still power-modded Combat Knife to town on the Arachnotrons, and killed every one of them before the invulnerability wore off. I left the Tristar Blaster behind and picked up the BFG. Level 15 marked a period of transition between my ranged playstyle and my new Malicious Blades melee style. I was able to bring down Imps and Demons with very little problem, and when I one-shotted a Baron of Hell in full Berserk mode, I knew I had found my build. The reason the History says that I "left level 16 as soon as possible was because the Cyberdemon ended up spawning right next to me, but unlike my first ever encounter with the big guy which had much the same setup and which ended up with me getting smeared all over the vicinity, I zig-zagged my way over to him and tore him apart with four or five hits for a flawless victory, not even giving the big guy a chance to get out the rocket launcher.

Hell saw me gradually switching to the Blades full time, and on Level 3 of Hell, I finally found another Bulk Mod pack at long last, guarded by around four or so Cacodemons in a small room. In any other situation, going into melee with four Cacodemons in this situation would be suicide. But with my armor, my health and my new melee skills, I laid waste to all four of the gasbags and assembled my second Chainsword on the spot. From there on out, I switched primarily to my dual Chainswords as my primary weapon, with my other weapons being secondary and only seeing use against Sergeants and others that I knew I couldn't get close to. The dual chainswords are quite capable of taking out the Dreaded Trio (Revenants, Viles and Mancubi) in two or so hits, though there was one point where I was faced with two Revenants and a Vile together and I had to get the hell out of there, whip out the BFG and blast the hell out of them, which ended up doing a shit-ton of damage to the walls and covered the floor in lava. With the Revenant taken out, I closed in with the weakened Vile and chainsworded him to death (a nice little bonus was that when I killed a Vile with the chainswords, the result was usually gibbage), then hunted down the remaining Revenant and did the same. I entered a number of levels with Invulnerability, which allowed me to go to frigging town on things out of the gate, including the very last level before Ol' Spidey, which was full of Cacodemons and Arachnotrons. I found the Thermonuclear Bomb somewhere along the road to the final level, in a Demon and Lost Soul infested cave, but because I had missed another special level along the way, I had no Invulnerability for the final battle with Spidey, and there was no Invulnerability to be had in the second to last level, so I elected not to use the nuke. What I did get was a Soul Sphere and a nice Red Armor, which I power-modded for the final battle.

I have only fought Spidey three times, one of which I already posted about. The second time, on another Survivalist build, I nuked her and used Invulnerability to survive, but I cannot count it as a win because my first battle with Carmack saw me getting overwhelmed by his summons and getting killed. This third battle saw me wading through Spidey's heinous autofire to get right in her face and take the chainswords to town. Spidey moved a lot during the battle once I started doing damage, but I stayed on her the entire way and backed her into one of the big pillars surrounding the arena and eventually killed her. I was at around 80% health and 62% armor when I finally brought Spidey down.

This is my second big win, and my first successful YAAM run. I still have not beaten Carmack, so YAFW is still beyond my reach. One day...

So I got my hands on DoomRL fairly recently. I learned the ropes of the game one YASD at a time, and up until now, the farthest that I've gotten in the game was the Tower of Babel on one other character, a Marine on a Survivalist build going for Army of the Dead, who just couldn't stand up to Ol' Cyber Head and got his ass smeared all over the pavement (those rockets hurt like a bastard, especially with precious few health packs). This time around, I went with a Scout with two ranks in Intuition and a shotgun build, and to my surprise, not only did I take down the Cyberdemon, but I also took things all the way to the final showdown with Ol' Spidey and kicked her ass.

34 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 31 of those were killed.
And 2 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

 1 souls destroyed the Mastermind...
1 killed the bitch and survived.

--------------------------------------------------------------

My two starting levels of Intuition proved to be a lifesaver many times over, and among other things allowed me to clear both Hell's Arena and the Chained Court with little problem. My weapon throughout the early parts of the game was the old reliable boomstick, though the rocket launcher did see use against the Arena Master, and level 6 saw me adding the Double Shotgun to my arsenal. Level 7 saw me assembling a pair of tactical boots and going into the Phobos Lab. I did come damned close to dying when three demons got in my face with my back to the acid, and I used up most if not all of my early health packs. Once I assembled the Tactical Shotgun, it became my workhorse weapon along with the Double Shotgun through most of the major game, and among other things allowed me to blow through the two Barons of Hell at the Phobos Anomaly with little trouble.

Episode 2 saw me creating my Nanofiber red armor, which I had done before on other characters. It's kinda nice to have armor that won't get destroyed on you, even if it does cut down on your speed a bit. When I got my hands on Shottyman, things became a lot smoother. For some reason, I thought that the Arena Master's Staff was meant for the Wall and not the Vaults, resulting in me getting tired out with no effect. I had to use my rockets in order to bust through the Wall, and then use my combo of rockets and my Tactical Shotgun to wipe out the Hellknights within and snag up the Backpack.

The very next level saw me finding the Jackhammer, and I actually had to do some careful work with targeting in order to clear out the bad guys near it so that I could actually get my hands on the puppy because it was right next to a goddamn lava barrel, and I could have lost it quite easily. The Jackhammer became my other main weapon, which I first pulled out against an Arachnotron (because FUCK THOSE THINGS). The Jackhammer is damned fun to use, but as I found out soon enough, it eats shells for breakfast. Between the tactical shotgun and the double shotgun, the City of Skulls was a breeze, and I took the time to upgrade to the Missile Launcher. The Halls of Carnage are the reason this isn't a YAAM run, as I didn't feel like sticking around and trying to kill everything with the lava closing in. By the time I got my hands on the BFG and got the hell out of there, I was running low on shells, which made level 15 a nightmare to navigate -- I had dumped my pistol, my chaingun and my 10mm ammo early on in favor of the boomsticks, and so I had to use the missile launcher and plasma gun in conjunction with what shells I could salvage in order to get through it. The Missile Launcher and the BFG were my main weapons against the Cyberdemon, and though I came damned close to dying again, I managed to win out and proceed to the final chapter.

I was very low on shells following my Halls of Carnage run, and the RNG wasn't doing me very many favors. It was a very careful picking through the levels to get myself back in shape, and there was a lot of lava and acid, which I mainly got past by using missiles on walls so I could get through -- I was damned if I was going to sacrifice any more health than I needed to. I did end up using the Jackhammer on the very first Archvile I encountered, mainly because I wanted to take it down quickly, and lots of radar-shooting was had against mancubi, hell-knights and barons alike. And then Mt. Erebus came along.

I had gotten my hands on Invincibility just before heading down to Mt. Erebus, so crossing the expanse of lava wasn't too bad, being a matter of shooting down Lost Souls and making my way to the mountain proper. The main opposition was a mess of Hell Knights, which I primarily used my rockets and shells on. Once all of them were dead, I wanted to head back, but knew the return trip would require at least one envirosuit. Then the Lava Elemental showed up -- quite easily the toughest opponent I have ever faced. Nothing was working against him -- my shells weren't doing jack to him, and neither were my rockets. The only thing in my arsenal that actually succeeded in stopping him was the BFG, which yielded me the Lava Element. I never did figure out what the hell I'm supposed to use the thing for.

After Mt. Erebus, my supply of shells was pretty much near gone, and after using up all of the shells of both the Tactical and Double Shotguns, I had to use my Missile Launcher with the Bulk Mod against the rest of the monsters, including an Archvile that I did some radar-shooting on from far off. I got my hands on the Butcher's Cleaver, but being as I'm not a melee character, I didn't see the point in using it. Since I couldn't find a nuke in pretty much any level I went through, it was down to me and my Missile Launcher against Spidey. I actually led her across the arena because I was certain there was a nuclear BFG or something else that I could use against her. As it turned out, not so much.

I didn't get to fight Carmack this run, but as first wins go, I didn't do too bad at all.
