Discussion / Re: Sanity check : Special level format
« on: January 29, 2008, 06:29 »
All is clear except for some magical entries like:
Code: [Select]
level = {11,14},
Level.visited(3)
Level.player(8,18)
Level.put(2,2,
I suppose that {11,14} means that stairs to this level can appear as a special level between 11th and 14th phobos base level, but i have no clue about other three.

Requests For Features / Re: NO save challenge mode.
« on: January 29, 2008, 05:55 »
Considering that mortem can be edited I could play such "challenge" once and then just copy-paste the line that is supposed to show a no-save game. So much for cheating prevention.
That would be my next point to show that this is stupid idea.

You want anti-cheat system? So let's do it the right way!

First of all, Kornel would have to add the save counter to the mortem. For example in ADOM (great rougelike btw) you get the entry "He saved the world while saving himself xxx times" or something like that.

Don't forget that the game still crashes occasionally and FORCES the save. So the "cheatproof" entry in the mortem will appear only if you are lucky and the DoomRL doesn't crash.

This of course would not prevent the easiest way to cheat - fabricating mortems. So we need additional measure of security, for example appending to the end of the mortem the hash of its contents (hash = small number generated from the large data). Then Kornel would have to create some kind of mortem validator, so we would be able to check if the mortem wasn't edited.

Doesn't it all sound ridiculous already?

Dude, you have to ask yourself two questions: why do I really think this feature is needed? Why do I read and post the mortems on the forum?

Isn't it easier just to trust people (maybe I'm too naive)? And if someone posts fake mortems to seek attention, do you really care? Honestly I'd feel rather sorry for that person. Wouldn't you?

Let's get this straight: you want some way to tell if person posting a mortem on the forum cheated by backuping the save (which is called savescumming, wheater you like it or not)?

Imagine this situation: I take Invulnerability, I go downstairs to the next level and there I find Computer Map. Whole map and all powerups are revealed. Without active Invulnerability I would be able to determine the type of powerups by their color, but with black and white Invulnerability vision I don't have this information. I can use "look" command only for the powerups in sight which is hardly enough.

I'd like to have always the same information about revealed powerups (unless it is intended drawback of invulnerable/berserk mode). The most obvious solution is to make possible looking at revealed objects out of line of sight.

I sometime use TAB to stop running. For example: I'm taking fire from barons of hell and I want to run behind the wall. Then I want to shoot them out of sight with my chaingun. I don't need running bonuses anymore, so I stop running to get rid of -2 tohit penealty.

Bug Reports / Cyberdemon problem [SPOILER WARNING]
« on: January 25, 2008, 13:18 »
Recently two friends of mine was unlucky enough to have the Cyberdemon generated inside the indestructible pillar on the Phobos Arena. I suppose in this case you can only win if you have thermie, because I don't know if firing rockets/BFG at the pillar would damage Cyberdemon inside it. Anyways, it seems like a bug to me.

Is there any way to force the game to request certain keypress when some event occurs? I'll put it in more simple way:

I try to reload the weapon, but I have no ammo left.
Currently I only get the message "No ammo left!".
I'd like to see the message "No ammo left! [press Enter]" and I would have to press enter before I could do anything else.

Why do I need this?

I fire a lot at the monsters I do not see. So generally I press f, some directions keys (the first one is usually diagonal direction, because I'm shooting behind the corner) and f again, and r to reload a gun now and then. It's very repetitive work, so I usually do it quite fast and sometimes I overlook the "no ammo left. weapon is empty." messages, I end up walking one step diagonally and lose half of my HP, because all the monsters that were behind the corner shoot at me. The function I described above would prevent this, because i'd have to press enter to confirm "no ammo" message and all other keystorkes would be ignored.

If it is not already possible, will you add it in the future?

--------------------------------------------------------------

I've finally managed to carry the nuke to Phobos Arena (i usually died around Phobos Hell lvl7-8). I set the nuke off, moved few steps and was killed by first rocket fired at me (I was at something like 25% life at this point). The nuke went off, but it seems Cyberdemon survived it! I thought it was impossible, especially on medium difficulty (it might be a nice idea for N! and UV - you have to do some damage using traditional weapons, because cyberdemon would survive "just" the nuke blast). I have "won by sacrifice" entry in highscore, but the "complete AoMs" on player screen is not checked. Needless to say I'm quite pissed off, because I thought I've finally beaten this challenge. Is this some kind of bug, or do I have to be alive when the nuke goes off? Or maybe the nuke can be destroyed by rocket (don't think this is the case, because there are no pillars in the screenshot, and I have -200 HP)? And most importantly, why is the Cyberdemon alive on the screenshot?

Pre-0.9.9 / Re: [U|76%|YAVP]
« on: January 16, 2008, 03:07 »
Yes, I think new version is much easier. I think two items have to be nerfed:
1. Homing Phase Device. It's easy to skip at least 2 levels (I usually have 2 HPD by dlvl20), maybe more if stairs are generated nearby - i don't use HPD right away, I check the nearest rooms for ammo/powerups first. I have two ideas for this item: you have to spend some time on the level before using it (worse idea, because you may skip that time by walking inside closed room) or you have to reveal certain % of map before using it (the percentage may be different for different level types - it's easier to reveal map on "arena" or "cave" level than "labirynth" or "bunch of small rooms").
2. Armor Durability Mod. I'd change it to 150% max, x1.5 current durability when used.

I probably haven't found any uniques, because after I got BFG I didn't clear every level. In my Avatar of Purity game I found Minigun, but it sucked for me (I didn't have EE and SotB and it's accuracy was very low) and in Hurt Me Plenty game I found Missile Launcher, but if I remember correctly it was worse than my modded Advanced Rocket Launcher, so I left it.

Yesterday I was on DoomRL rampage: I've managed to finish Avatar of Purity, kill the Cyber on Hurt Me Plenty difficulty in a very next game and few games later I won the game on Ultra-Violence.

I thought I'll be able to win the Hell's Arena, but 2 Cacodemons in first wave of monsters proved I'm wrong - I had to escape with 40% of health and one small medikit. Later I skipped the special levels, except for the Chained Court (free experience and plasma cells) and Halls of Carnage (for BFG). After I got BFG I descended as fast as possible. Last 2 levels was skipped with homing phase devices. Cyberdemon was harder than I expected, so I had to finish him with Rocket Launcher and two bursts from plasma rifle. As a last resort I had a nuke, but fortunately I didn't have to use it.
