With respect to Ultimate Endings and luck, possibly the nuclear variants of weapons should be nukes instead if some conditions are fulfilled?
e.g. for the 2nd one, if you enter while wielding the Dragonslayer, then it's a nuke. The first one happens before UC.

Is there a guaranteed envirosuit pack in this version anywhere other than Lava Pits itself?

Doesn't DS pretty much gib everything? Even Longinus does that for me...

LS and AS do plasma damage which means you need to deal only 200% of max hp, while DS deal melee which means you need to deal 400%.

To be honest I'm used to only relying on the rocket launcher, stacked corpses, acid/lava, barrels and nukes for gibbing, so I probably have to relearn a few things. edit: The last time I played AS used to be melee damage as well, whereas LS was plasma.

Nightmare! / [N!|91%|YAUW] failed 100% attempt
« on: May 26, 2012, 20:50 »
Attempted to get a 100% killrate, then Dragonslayer spawned in UC, and this was the first time ever I've managed to wield it as well. However after this I realised I had no idea how to get a reliable 100% (corpse-clearing) rate with a melee weapon, let alone Dragonslayer, even if it's possible I have no experience with this and the corresponding armor artefact, so I opted for a minimal damage run instead (had already taken some damage including UC), stocking up on phase devices and enviropacks as much as I could.
After getting the Berserker Armor from the Mortuary, 100% would've seemed even farther away anyway, Nightmare Demons were everywhere, I couldn't find a limit to their numbers and corpse-clearing was a total non-factor.
Finding nukes also became a priority as I realised that I didn't know how to overload nuclear weapons while wielding the Dragonslayer.
The Apostle was also much more resilient than I expected (3 strikes with the Dragonslayer and he was still smiling).

Nightmare! / Re: [N!|AoSh|99%|YAFW] Shottyman Diamond
« on: August 01, 2011, 21:10 »
Thanks. I wanted to try a game without Finesse and Whizzkid, so MAD fitted well (and I was hoping to find Schematics, as I can't make anything new without Nano mod packs).
It would also have been a choice between MAD,TaN,Badass,SoaB vs MFa,DM,HR,Fin,WK, because of the trait blocking requirements. I like HR,Fin and WK but I also like TaN and Badass.

It's probably correct that Fin/HR/WK is stronger than MAD. Faster fire rate, faster reloads, stronger assemblies. But I already tried that route.

UV YAAM AoB, is very possible I think. I'll try, but certainly a level 2-3 Butcher's Cleaver and/or Berserk Packs in the right places should make it possible, or you can get lucky with the types of enemies spawned and the powerups. You get less xp & enemies than you do on N!, but no respawning and being 0.1s faster with no "-fast" enemies is going to make it easier anyway.

I'm still reluctant to fight the Shambler head on, so I wasn't sure if I could KB it into lava.

N! seems to frequently give me that many globes/powerups and a nuke or two on later levels. Vault & Spider's Lair were the same globes (nuked the level in between). There weren't actually any other kinds of super powerups that I found, no Megaspheres, almost no Berserk Packs, one or two Supercharges, but the ones I did get, the Invulnerability Globes, were amazingly useful, so it's still very lucky.

---

If I go for Gargulec Cross, I'll probably attempt something else at the same time (Iron Skull?). It would be nice to finally wield Dragonslayer as well.

This took quite a while, made as a precusor to AoB. I'm pretty convinced that a N! YAAM AoB isn't going to be possible with the trouble I had here, using knockback to clear up, when my only source of knockback in AoB is really weak.

Level 1: Quick & easy.

Level 2: Horizontal river right through the middle, so very easy too.

Hell's Arena: This seemed much harder than it is with a chaingun. Maybe someone could write a guide on clearing it with a shotgun? (as an extension to the existing shotty guide for UV).
Anyway, it was done, eventually, with lots of corpse stacking.

Level 3: Had to knockback enemies -into- doorways. Killing enemies with fists is an option but at 50% hitchance I'd give it a miss in general. Imps & Hellknights "helped" out with corpse destroying.

Level 4 & 5 and onwards: Acid Barrels = Portable acid baths, very helpful.

Chained Court: Began Supercharged to 200%, with Green Armor (100%) and some extra berserk. Killed the Arena Master by shooting him up against a wall so that knockback stopped effecting him and then just shooting until he was dead. Took a lot of damage, but the berserk packs helped.
The Arena Master's Staff helps with getting rid of some clustered corpses/enemies, once per level (or more sometimes).

Armoury: This was very dangerous. The Shambler took quite a while to kill because of his hitpoint regeneration, and teleportation. He managed to teleport and hit me at the same time. A few enemies that weren't in the lava respawned, and the only way I had to get rid of the Shambler's corpse was to kill another enemy on top of it immediately after killing it (otherwise the Shambler would've respawned, and I didn't want to fight it twice with shotguns). After that, eventually everything ended up in the lava but it took a while. The Armoury cache didn't open when the Shambler died, only when everything was dead.

I keep finding Bulk mods, and a Cybernetic Armor instead of a Schematic or advanced mod (although I did use the armour in the final battle with JC).
I made a second Tactical Armour, because the first kept getting wrecked and near destruction.

Hellgate: Invulnerabilty Globe just before it, so nice and easy (and I let them destroy each other's corpses with splash damage). Don't think I took any damage and the Elephant Gun I just assembled let me walk backwards and still hit the Bruiser Brothers for some damage. One of them respawned but was easy to kill again from where he was (they died in the middle of the first ambush area).

Level 16: Found a Hatred Skull, but without any levels in Brute (and Eagle Eye), there was no way I would contemplate a fist fight with Demons let alone the AoD.

Vault: Two invulnerabilty globes and a Berserk Pack just before it, I just let the splash damage destroy the corpses, shot a few Revenants into the Lava, there was nothing interesting so I left here with invulnerability to spare.

Spider's Lair: Probably could have been difficult, but I had Invulnerabilty at the start. Thinking about ways of clearing it, possibly corpse stacking on a horizontal line, but the stairs are at either end of the middle of the map, so if you can kill everything from the stairs you can just exit.

Level 20: Started on this map, surrounded by Arch-Viles. Lost quite a lot of health.

Morturary: Entered while Invulnerable. Used a Hatred Skull, then a Nuke followed by a Homing Phase Device which took me to the Assault Shotgun. After the Nuke, a single bloody corpse survived at the top of the screen, as well as the Angelic Armor.

Lava Pits: Thanks to envirosuits and Gothic Boots it was easier (and having 100 hitpoints helps).
Berserker Armor was here.

Cyberdemon: Nuked. The battle afterwards was very tough. All 3 of my armours took a beating (Angelic, Red(P) and Cybernetic(B)), and he summoned all of his Barons immediately. When the cybernetic armour broke I was in trouble, I activated the lava element, and he died from the double shotty and his own Barons before I did. Oh and I noticed, he isn't effected by knockback at all, although his rocket launcher sends his own Barons flying far away.

-----

This was a pretty ugly run for me. I took a lot of damage from attacks and from making enemies gib their own corpses. Didn't earn the Iron Skull, anyone have any idea how to get that reasonably? the amount of damage you have to take per level on average is very high. I've yet to earn the Untouchables as well, probably easier to get on lower difficulty settings.

Carrying a lot of medpacks and finding Invulnerability helped so much with getting rid of corpses here. Imps/Hell Knights & Revenants are very good at "helping" out. You can kill Arch Viles on top of other corpses, but it's not something that's really viable or easy to do.
Pushing corpses around with barrels until they are next to acid/lava and then knockback them in works too but isn't optimal.

Thanks, I decided a practical experiment would give me the answer.
After testing, I've decided the AoD is very defeatable in fair combat without brute & berserk, you need Finesse 2+, Hellrunner 2+ (walking speed under 0.6s), Eagle Eye 1-2 (on non AoMC), Chainsaw and 10+ large medpacks (theoretical extrapolation from AoMC). You should be able to halve the number of required medpacks needed if:
* playing on AoMC or
* using the Double Chainsaw or
* timing attacks to some degree

The actual experiment was made on AoMC with 3 medpacks and a modified standard Chainsaw (BPT) (some timing, but mostly held ground except when healing/switching armor, because I wanted to see what AoD's best shot at me was), but I'm going to assume on other angels it's ~3 times harder, taking average damage and AoD armor into account. All lost souls and demons were killed in standard hand-to-hand (Demons on doors) without taking any damage (in non-AoMC I would recommend lavabath). The medpack requirement shouldn't be that steep especially if using the double chainsaw and timing attacks. Definitely don't switch armor or use medpacks or anything else that takes ~1.0s while standing next to AoD though. Put at least 2 squares between AoD and yourself first.

tl;dr:
Fin 2+, HR 2+(walk <0.6s), EE 2, Chainsaw+, 10+ Large Medpacks -> Killable AoD w/o Brute?
YASD possible if you let the AoD double-hit you or don't heal (not possible if done right).

Oh yes, and different armor types didn't make a huge difference on his single attacks, so if wearing Red Armor or similar, ensure your movespeed is <0.6s so you can get away from AoD when necessary, but in any case, this would be a good way to wreck your armor fast, well unless you have plenty of spares. You're probably better off facing him with indestructible or regenerating armor (that doesn't slow you down).

If you go left past the doors at the beginning, the Barons can attack you from behind. If you stop to kill Formers (on the left), the AM will close distance fast and revive them. I think it's best to play it safe, focus on the AM, and invest in the rocket launcher and plasma rifle.

Option 1: Open the top door, shoot left with the chaingun until you start hitting the AM, then either continue or switch to plasma/rockets, continue until the AM is dead, then switch to normal tactics. Maybe grabbing the chainsaw & berserk packs first would be better, because the AM won't give you much breathing room if he's closed distance.

Option 2: Your alternative option. The AM will stop around the centre of the map so you should be able to get plenty of distance from him. You could also switch to this option if not having any luck with Option 1 and you suspect he's still closing distance.

Both should work because AoMC increases your accuracy to the degree that outside-LOS shots rarely miss.
/////

I'll add an additional question.

N! UC. Modified Red Armor 4/4 100% (A), or Modified Red Armor 6/6 100% (AP), Tactical Boots. Double Chainsaw. SoBx2, Finx3, HRx2. 8-10x  Large Medkits. (No Brute. Longinus Diamond rules). No berserking.

All Lost Souls & Demons are dead and won't respawn. How good are my odds against AoD in standard hand-to-hand combat in these situations?
AoMC
non-AoMC
same again but with a standard Chainsaw.

Marksman Diamond attempt, I tried to clear everything, not very successfully (78%) and I couldn't even finish Hell's Arena. After nearly dying there, a lever in my starting location was too tempting to resist. Predictable results ensue.

There is a lever here.

I'm kinda obsessive about fully clearing, but this is one of the badges I'll either have to give up on that for, or find a way to do it (might require a lot of time/patience/attempts).

Thanks. I haven't had any impossible or even dangerous starts yet in standard runs, some are mildly dangerous, such as starting with V/B/R in view. In AoPc, there was the starting in the middle of a arachnotron cave without hellrunner, which nearly killed me, and trying to get past most levels on AoPc feels very dangerous to me. When I have full access to weapons, nothing is that bad.

The "strategy" I have is. Equip my best weapons if possible before descending, expect the worst. If there's not much in the starting room, kill everything, consider chainfire, they are slow to react to a levelled up Doomguy. If it's bad, either start killing as fast as possible to get the numbers down, or consider moving to a better position, so tab, then run for the nearest door or wall corner and hope it's better. Generally I find killing to be preferable, taking advantage of the enemy's slow start, often I can just kill everything before they start moving, also, in every bad start, there's also usually barrels next to the enemies, so I shoot those as well if they would make things better, acid/lava can slow down quite a few strong enemies or it can kill a bunch of weaker ones. Also since it's the beginning of the level, I don't have to worry about monsters respawning much, if they do, that means an Arch-Vile nearby. I think just having strong weapons and a few levels in finesse/SoaB is what does it, but I've usually got TaN/BAD and 200% health so that helps too.

If I encounter a situation which I deem to be impossible or very withering, using a phase device (if it's still early) or a homing phase device (if monsters are already moving or if I'm in a bad way) can get me out of it. On N!, phase devices can be worth more than medkits sometimes. I just try to keep a few phases and medkits on me at all times, I don't usually carry spare armor, yet.

I haven't had many Arachnotron Caves yet, I realise those things can be killers, especially early on. I think I would use a homing phase device, or slugging it out depending on the situation. If I can take them on 1-2 at a time, then while I might take damage, they will die before me (since I have large medkits), but for a high levelled well-armed Doomguy I think they aren't a problem, and they carry one of the best kinds of ammo.

Of course I didn't have any medkits or phase devices here, but what I did have was berserk packs and invulnerability globes, usually one near the stairs, so I would take either of those and then with my equipment berserked I think I was around 5x faster than Arch Viles, and things like former humans just seem to stand still. I guess you can count taking packs/globes before going down the stairs as part of the strategy (more viable on 100% runs).

---

I've been thinking about how to get Gargulec Cross on N! or 100% AoMr (Diamond, without SoG). So far my attempts at those have been ~100% attempts, and tend towards failure for various reasons. I find Level 2-3 100% to be harder without chaingun & shotgun, and the available options for clearing are less or weaker with those angel attempts. Whereas I'm sure it can be possible to 100% either if you can find an Exotic on level 2, I haven't found a way during a normal run.

The problems:
100% AoB:
Demons, Hellknights, Cacodemons, all present problems at melee range. Demons can be killed without damage if you are lucky with environmental factors, but melee combat with a Hellknight or Cacodemon is going to be costly. Ideally you need to reach Level 3 on Level 2 of the dungeon. I feel like you need to be 1 level higher than normal to guarantee success here. Even Imps can be troublesome depending on their placement, and your restructuring options are more limited in AoB.
Cleanup of bodies is much harder at AoB, you need to be very careful where you fight/kill enemies on top of everything else. Also because you are limited to melee range, and you can't rely on the thrown knife (it's very inaccurate) to extend range, you have to be especially careful during cleanup as the delayed start of respawned monsters is not as much advantage to a melee character as a ranged character (hence be careful where you kill).

100% AoMr (no SoG):
The problem here stems from low damage and lack of knockback possibilities. You'll never beat the respawn clock on Level 2 with a single pistol and no SoG. Pistol luring might be a possibility.

..and the problem with both, is the increased danger and vulnerability you face when encountering enemies, and the fact that clearup is going to take even longer than it would do with full access to everything.

10
If you look around, my old mortems might still be on here. The N! full win one is, called "[N!|90%|Win] My first attempt at Nightmare.", but it was made 4 years ago.

11
#1. Arch-Viles never respawn, that's right. They leave behind "bloody corpse". This is to prevent Arch-Viles from raising each other if you encounter more than one.

#2. I think that's why that level has a Nuclear BFG.

Very nice.

Nightmare! / Re: [N!|AoPc|7%|YAVP] Pacifism Diamond
« on: July 23, 2011, 22:35 »
I know, but I wanted to experiment with MVm, even though it comes too late to do any good anyway, besides if I took EE->EE->Int->Int, it would be identical to many other AoPc builds. I don't know the requirements for wielding Dragonslayer (or Berserker Armor) but I could guess, looks like one of my guesses might be right.

13
The methods I use for clearing up corpses are pretty tiring, not quite as bad as killing AoD with a combat knife (outside of AoMC) perhaps, but certainly time-consuming. The first few levels are actually the hardest to 100%, because Doomguy starts off very sluggish and has the worst weapons, whereas respawn increases at the same rate on every level.

I've only just begun experimenting with giftdropping myself, so it was annoying to lose my medkits, but there's still Green Armor on level 1 of AoI. It should be enough to get all of the formers onto doorways, but getting to the armor to begin with is a lot more difficult than in most other games.
(that reminds me, if you can get a "damage all monsters" lever on Level 1-2 of an AoPc, that can put you off to a great start, as you can gain an extra 1-2 levels like that).

In this case, for level 2 I had the gift of a "flood all water" lever, which made it pretty redundant as I could just kill everything and nothing would respawn. Level 2 is usually one of the most boring/longest levels to 100%, there's a few things:
Find a chaingun (if you can use one)
Save barrels for (dead) Imps
Get formers onto doors or each other. Shoot them (with a shotgun) onto dead Imps first if there's no barrels around. You may not want to kill every former on a door just in case you need them to get rid of Imps (or worse things later).
Use a shotgun where necessary to "move" dead enemies around or on top of each other
If you can deal damage quickly enough, a "pet" demon, can sit/die on annoying Imp corpses for you. Obviously this is easier on AoMC, since demons can take quite a while to kill early on, even with a Chaingun. You might want to use a former human instead, they have a ranged attack but are much easier to kill, and a single pistol shot that strikes them will not kill them but draw their attention.
Water is very useful, especially in the centre. All you need is a shotgun and even Imps are no problem.
If you get a vault with Cacodemons, that's either lucky or unlucky depending on how you look at it.
Giftdrop liberally, and take advantage of the AI's nuances.

Hell Arena:
Clear it as quickly as possible, with a Chaingun. Pay attention to corpses that get up, even if they're out of sight, you will see them, and since they won't move for 4 seconds, they should be a sitting duck (not so much if it's a Cacodemon). Once you finish the 3rd wave enemies will no longer respawn. If you can't use a Chaingun then you need to be very good at corpse stacking and killing demons. Grab the Rocket Launcher and all of the Rockets at the end.

Level 3:
Hellknights, shouldn't be a problem if you can get them weak enough and kill them on a door, otherwise kill something weaker on top of their corpse. Cacodemons and Imps are still a problem, if you don't have the Rocket Launcher yet, or want to save the rockets, it can take a while to clear. Same as level 2, but prioritise barrels for Cacodemons.

Level 4+:
You should definitely have the Rocket Launcher now. It only gets easier from here on out. Also, once acid and napalm barrels appear, if there isn't already acid/lava in the middle of the map, if you can clear the middle and destroy a barrel there, it's only a matter of time before all of the corpses end up inside the acid/lava (as long as you saved a weapon with knockback), especially as most enemies gravitate towards the centre of the map. Note that, even the Combat Knife can induce knockback in enemies, and isn't destroyed by barrel explosions.
Acid/lava is very useful in general, enemies frequently get "stuck" on it and after that it's very easy to push them onto it. It's possible to clear all levels from here out with the environment, corpse stacking and barrels, but if you get tired or if it's a mean group of enemies, the rocket launcher usually makes short work of corpses. If it's too far from any walls, you can even rocket jump to gib corpses.

Probably the quickest way (not the way I've been doing it though) would be to just use rockets from here on out and any nearby barrels. The BFG can gib corpses too (but destroys a lot of items) if you're in a hurry. Stay stocked up on Rockets, and once you run into Mancubi & Revenants you gain the ability to "farm" Rockets.

I still don't have a failsafe/quick method for clearing level 2 because of the Imps, and level 3 because of the Cacodemons and arguably hard to kill Hellknights (depending on configurations) so it might be best to stack formers on top of them. If looking for a quick way to dispose of corpses, I recommend Rockets, which means completing Hell's Arena to get them early and guaranteed.

Hm, that's all I can think of right now, I'm not good at writing guides. (also I think all/most of this is already mentioned in different formats in guides, so it's probably not very helpful. It takes a very long time to clear levels sometimes, so I haven't developed a "fast" method yet.)

Oh one thing, in my experience "Demolition Ammo" doesn't gib corpses. Longinus Spear/Scythe (berserked) will gib smaller monsters on attack, but I haven't seen anything else do that yet.
+ another thing, you can wait around and kill Imps on doors too, as long it's safe to do so and you don't mind that the respawn rate will be increasing the whole time in general (this only works in certain places, thanks to the AI. The closer to the centre you can setup in a door, the better). I guess that's kinda obvious to mention, since you can do it with Formers (albeit much easier thanks to giftdropping), but I did that sometimes when facing large groups of Imps.

In terms of general strategy, I corner shoot and scout a lot, shoot at a lot of different angles, try to find weird angles to "bend" shots around corners and use the trick for shooting through gaps & doors to pull off otherwise impossible shots. I try to minimise the amount of time an active enemy can see me as much as possible, and wherever possible try to kill them from behind cover (as in around corners). Use chainfire to save a bullet here and there for scouting down corridors (since it uses less ammo). Ammo isn't a major problem on N! since you usually have an opportunity to farm it, and Arch Viles only add to the amount of ammo on a map, usually.

final edit: annnnd... I didn't need to write all this after all, sklres already began his YAAM runs on N!

While great weapons, firing the Grammaton and the Storm Bolter in fully automatic mode did present me with ammo difficulties, at times I had switch down to using the Grammaton in single/semi-auto with the Speedloader Pistol. This gave me an appreciation of MAC (used in a later run).

He's the first brave soul to have ventured into Hell...

Nothing special, except this was my first soul getting back into DoomRL. Begin to fall in love with Necroarmor and the Hyperblaster. Phaseshift boots are great, but hard to find.

Edit: Well, coming back to this game, I realise that the most special thing was that Berserker Armor and Dragonslayer spawned in the same game. I was kinda hoping that they always spawned together, but it doesn't appear to be that way browsing other mortems.
