So, I feel a little cheated. I walked into that doorway with full health and a reasonable amount of blue armour. There seems to have been no way I could realistically have expected to get attacked by 3 Arch Viles and a Commando in one move, and god knows what else was going to fire if I'd survived that. Meh.

I was trying to go for the Overlord rank, but I'm resigning myself to General now. It's really discouraging to die to bad luck as opposed to bad judgment.

Aside from that, it was a fun game. Got lucky finding my Advanced Chaingun on floor 11 or so. Obviously, I didn't use the minigun. Bad weapon.

This was tough - admittedly, I did it on my first attempt (of the night - I have tried it before, and failed), but it felt hairy. The trick is knowing when to fight and when to run, I think. I also had a little bit of luck with stair placement toward the end.

Only just managed to kill Cybie, as the 1 HP remaining shows. Four BFG shots took him to Almost Dead, and then I ran away (thank you, Hell Runner 3) and hid behind a pillar, waiting for him to appear so I could pop him with my plasma rifle (which only just killed him, it seems). I almost missed him - I'd suggest changing the colour to bright green, like the uniques. Too many things are dull red. Just a thought.

Didn't find any of the uniques particularly useful - Necroarmor, I only had for the Final Fight (admittedly, that must have saved me, considering my HP - though conversely, it could have drained more than the 12 it saved... Hmm... So okay, that was perhaps useful). The weapons were a bit poor, though. Maybe if I'd found them earlier... The earliest I've ever found a unique was the assault shotgun on level 4, but generally it's at least 12+ that I see them.

And now I'm a General, or so it told me. Must have unknowingly finished those requirements before the Colonel ones. Though I feel a bit guilty - my UV/Nightmare win was just a single Nightmare win on Angel of Pacifism - fairly easy.

Bug Reports / Sequence of monsters using items

I'm getting the impression that monsters can sometimes use items in the space between me taking my turn and them dying. E.g. I fire a shotgun at a monster, taking it to -1/5 HP, but before it dies, it uses a medpack, bringing it back up to 1HP, and it survives. (I pulled those numbers out of thin air).

No real evidence for this - it's just based on too many experiences of former humans on the opening level surviving shotgun blasts to the face, and then healing, whereas I very, very rarely (if ever) experience them surviving such shotgun blasts and then NOT immediately healing. If you get my meaning.

If I'm correct in my suspicions, I think this rather unfair. After all, I don't have a chance to use my stockpiled medkits in a post-death capacity :P

Requests For Features / 'Skills' - Alternative to Traits

I think we need something to increase the importance of player tactics (I'm not referring to the 'tab' tactics thing). At the moment, the early game is a test of attrition rather than skill - you get lucky as to whether you open a door on a caco/Hell Knight/Former sarge, and there's little variance in tactics a player will typically take in subsequent games (e.g., unlike Nethack, Angband, etc, I can't say 'Okay, I died trying to simply attack the bad guy from a distance last time, this time I'll try disable it somehow before attacking'). It gets a little better later on, as the variety of weapons and the amount of traits allows for some level of tactics, but it's not enough, in my opinion. Too much of the game is luck-based rather than decision-based.

So I'm suggesting we add something in that goes alongside Traits, but works differently. Perhaps something akin to a 'magic' system - except it won't be 'magic' but rather things such as 'Aimed Shot' (Next shot has 99% accuracy), 'Increased Perception' (to temporarily increase sight range), 'War Cry' (brings monsters coming to your position).

To those who will say 'Oh no, it's outside the scope of Doom': I'm sorry, but the scope of Doom, as it is, doesn't translate all that well to Roguelikes. There's no (in any useful degree) ability to nimbly dodge an imp's fireballs by strafing, no ability to shoot furiously while backing away from an oncoming demon.

To those who say 'But it's a coffeebreak Roguelike!' : If you're going to use that as an excuse, what's the point in continuing to improve it at all past its original release? If you're going to do something, it's worth doing it well.

I wasn't a fan of AoP for the first couple of levels, but once it got going, I really got into it. It created a cool stealth element, where HP were precious. I was lucky enough to find many medkits.

Managed it on the second attempt - first time, I got to Cybie, but he killed me while he was at Severely Wounded, the sod. I'd forgotten how tough he was - after a recent death at the hands of JC, I felt almost affection at the sight of that big red C. Still, I've had my vengeance.

Now for Angel of Masochism...

Requests For Features / Specific Difficulty Levels for Challenges

It seems a bit odd to me that someone can gain their rank of whatever by beating a challenge on Medium whilst someone else perservered and did it on a harder level.

And to be honest, some of the challenges are either too easy on the Medium setting (AoMr springs to mind) or too difficult to be feasible on certain harder ones (I'm still waiting for that AoB win on Nightmare, Blade ;)). Perhaps each one should have a specific difficulty setting - it'd make claims like 'I've beaten AoP' viable for evaluation without the need of qualifiers like 'On what setting? Did you get 100% killcount?' etc etc.

I also believe it'd make each challenge more unique - you'd look at it as an Ao? game, rather than 'A medium game with Ao? restrictions' or 'A UV game with Ao? restrictions'.

Just a thought.

Would have been 100%, if not for the final boss's bloody summoning.

Killing him was a bit hairy without medikits. Still, managed it in the end. Bit miffed about the Barons surviving though. Ah well.

Almost managed to nuke myself, by being unaware of the countdown. That was fun.

This was mainly attempted as a response to somebody else's mortem (I've forgotten whose) who claimed that 100% kills in the early levels was impossible. In Hard, I'd tend to agree - or at least, difficult enough to be frustrating rather than challenging in a fun kind of way. But it's not that bad in Normal once you've beaten the first couple of levels, with judicious use of Running tactics.

It came close a couple of times - on the 23rd level, I stood a little close to two barrels, and an unlucky shot from a former foo blew them both up, taking me to 8% HP. Another time, I wasn't watching my health and a bash from a Lost Soul or something took me to 2%.

Still, rather easy, overall. I found an invulnerability globe on the 23rd level, and had enough turns to go down the final stairs and nuke Cybie, actually. But considering all the work I'd done to maintain the 100% killrate, I figured I'd save the 'full win' for another time.

Does anyone else think challenges should have a specific difficulty level? E.g, you can only do AoB on Hard, or AoMr on Ultra, or Lt on Normal, etc. It'd make it more of a specific challenge - rather than 'Well I unlocked ---- rank by beating xxx challenge, but I did it on the easiest setting possible', whereas some other kings among us mere mortals will be doing every challenge available on Nightmare :P

I had around three or four arena levels, don't know whether it's some kind of AoB bug, because I tend to see a lot of them in AoB and few if any in other games.

Bug Reports / Strange Barrel Crash

I ducked behind a barrel on level 2 of an AoB challenge, and some kind of cross-fire involving imps and sergeants and other barrels resulted in a crash and some weird garbled message about writing a line number down (I'd have followed it if it wasn't spread across half the screen and unreadable).

It seems to have saved my game, so I can continue from a 'new' level 2, but annoyingly, with only the hitpoints I had when it crashed. Better than nothing, of course.

If only there'd been a nuke at some point during that game, I feel fairly confident I could have taken out the secret boss (there'd been an invincibility globe just prior to the stairs to Cybie). Sadly, it was not to be. Not a single globe!

Still, that aside, I'm quite pleased. The biggest challenge was easily the Mortuary - is the placement of Viles there fixed? There seemed to be about 6 on one side, and just two on the other. Which was bad for me - once I'd taken out about four on the left, I decided 'The rest must be on the right' and spent ages wandering around trying to find them. While meanwhile they were having a party at the far left. I ran out of cells on the shot that killed the last one - leaving two hell-knights and a caco alive. Lucky I had my CG.

Pretty standard otherwise - found my first advanced weapon, the plasma rifle, around level 21, where it wasn't much help. Still, it let me stick all the mods I was hauling around somewhere. Cybie was easy. I think I've worked out the strategy to this game now - just avoid getting in those situations where there are around 10 monsters firing at you and you can't escape. If only it was as easily done as it is said ;)

Requests For Features / Remove Chained Court

Does anyone think it might be good to remove the Chained Court? I always wince when I get to it. It's always the same - the berserk packs make it impossible to lose. It's so routine!

Even if you're a complete spastic, you can't die to those human guards with a total of 5 berserks available (plus the large health globe in the corner). The cacos, well, maybe the first time, but anyone who's gotten that far even a handful of time will be able to do the entire level in their sleep.

To pre-empt the reply of 'Ah, but it makes a player go 'Wow, this is neat!' the first time' - perhaps. But not the 2nd, 3rd, and definitely not the 200th time.

When you hit fire, it generally targets the nearest monster, right?

Only sometimes, the LOS it draws will land your bullet into a wall, even if there's an alternate one you could pick where it'd hit the monster. It'd be nice if we could make it always pick a 'valid' LOS (or tell us one doesn't exist) to speed up games, rather than having to laboriously check each time we fire at a monster near a wall.

So close, but yet so far.

I could have escaped - a phase put me right next to the 'exit' corner, with the advanced BFG. But that 100% kill rate was beckoning...

That's my last attempt on this game until the new beta comes out. If I can't do it when I have the immense luck of finding an advanced chaingun on level 3, then I can't do it at all.

I entered that level with full blue armour and at least 8 large medkits. Starts off fine. Then I walk into a room into the sight of two V's, who immediately take me down to something like 40% health. I phase out of there, only to find another V. Managed to take him out, and one more who popped up, but a third got me with some insane damage amount. And there was still one left elsewhere on the level. Unbelievable.

I've seen it said elsewhere that Viles are scary because of their resurrection ability. True enough, in old Doom. But here, a 100% hit-chance attack with that high damage, coupled with speed unmatched by anything but Lost Souls? Hell, I welcome the times they spend their turns resurrecting other monsters. Less turns spent hellfiring me.

Pretty low down on the totem pole, obviously, but it'd be nice. There are a lot of unexplained things. Modding isn't touched upon at all, in there. I suspect the mod-limit would be useful information for new players (so they'd know to get Whizkid ;)).

A brief summary of items and monsters would also be good. It's rather needed for some items - the thermonuclear bomb springs to mind, to avoid poor newbie suicides. And to solve a few other issues with it (I admit, what drove me to make this post was having the option to nuke the level I'm on - while invincible, obviously - but not knowing if that'd obliterate all the items or leave them, or give me exp from the monsters, or anything like that. The manual didn't contain any of that information).

Other matters that could benefit from a little elucidation would be the fact that accuracy is affected by range, and by moving from side to side, and perhaps a few vague teaser descriptions of some special levels/weapons for flavour?

Most, if not all the above information can be found on the site, but as an ease of use thing, it'd be wonderful to have the manual as a handy compendium of DoomRL lore as opposed to having to scour the wiki and various forum posts to find the answer needed. My only concern is that perhaps the proposed information would be too spoilerish? I'm a poor judge of that myself - I read spoilers on every RL I play (the 'fun' of cockatrice, ghul, and drolem insta-deaths in Nethack, ADOM and Angband respectively made sure of that), so I've somewhat lost my appreciation for mystery :P
