Just to clarify, is that not a thing in this game? I was a massive DoomRL coward, tens-of-thousands of turns waiting for enemies to come to my humble corner of the level, but maybe it'll be good for me to adapt if it's not available.

Whenever I go into a challenge run like Angel of Purity, I immediately ask myself "what is the strongest build I can possibly play under these restrictions?". For Angel of Masochism, I said "well I'll just heal with Vampyre then"; for Angel of Light Travel, I said "gottagofaster". Angel of Purity resists this approach to a some extent, in that the thing it takes away can't just be compensated for with a build, and it doesn't give you any advantages to play into -- so I instead asked "okay, what's the strongest DoomRL build?". Melee builds were out because not having access to Berserk packs makes them near-unplayable, which in my opinion left either Ammochain Marine or Gunrunner Scout -- Orandulum told me to consider Cateye Scout, but I don't think it compares to the other two, it guzzles ammo like no tomorrow (unlike Ammochain) for a less tangible and versatile DPS increase than Gunrunner. Sharpshooter Technician is really strong too, but it gimps your early game in a way that neither Ammochain nor Gunrunner do (and in fact, the reason I consider Gunrunner to be better than Ammochain is that Gunrunner's early game is almost good enough on its own -- it's really not that far off what I'd be buying for Masterless Scout).

I know a lot of people on the forum (including players better than me) think Gunrunner is bad, I think y'all insane. This game (as I currently understand it -- and admittedly my Nightmare! failings suggest I misunderstand the game to some extent) is all about finding a safe route to either the exit or a defensible camping point, and Gunrunner is both the best escape tool in the game and the best [short-term] DPS increase in the game.

I had a somewhat touch-and-go but mostly uneventful Phobos, spent a lot of time on around 12% health but managed to heal most of that when a level kindly spawned double vaults for me. Missed 100% kills thanks to an early acid river fucking up my kill rate (and EXP gain) by locking me out of ~70% of the level, but I probably wouldn't've got 100% anyway -- ammo's a pain for shotgun runs (which is definitely one big strength Ammochain has over every other non-melee build in the game).

Had Tactical Boots (I still stand by these being totally broken) by Deimos 1 but found myself hovering at ~20% health again -- but no biggie with 4ish large medpacks. Found Phaseshift one Deimos 2, fuck yeah -- I attribute much of my success to these items.

Seemingly twenty (honestly not sure how many, maybe five or eight?) HKs/Barons were way too close to my Deimos 7 spawn, which seemed total bullshit, but thanks to Phaseshift and Dodgemaster (and a timely switch to Blue Armor when I got a little cornered) I managed to survive it. I've always been a strong believer that "vanilla" (non-Angel) DoomRL never deals you unwinnable levels providing you build well and don't overshoot for acheivements when RNG's against you, and while I do *not* believe the same to be true of Angel of Purity, I do think a lot of players (especially newer players) try to YOLO bad spawns when escape routes exist. I also try to be a bit optimistic about bad spawns -- it makes me feel good to remember that every monster that spawns on you is a monster you don't need to kill later in the level.

This mortem seems to have become "2birds soapboxes his DoomRL opinions despite not actually being particularly good at the game and not really being active on the forum", so while I'm being a self-important wanker, I figured I'd talk about the Elephant Gun. I know a few guys here think it's a bad/mediocre weapon, and while I mostly agree, I think it completely breaks Gunrunner Scout. The most common complaint seems to be the reload speed, but if you always step-reload it, that's completely irrelevant. The drop-off is worse than Tactical/Assault/etc., but that's never seemed particularly relevant to me given that most corner shooting is often done at the 2--3 square range. It is worse for radar shooting, but it's still perfectly adequate for the task. Conversely, I'm not 100% sold on the Elephant Gun for Army of the Dead -- MAD does nothing to mitigate the 2 second reload speed, and Marine doesn't have Scout's movespeed; "always step-reload" is still a little on the slow side when you're camping a corner.

Using the rocket launcher, I managed to kill Cybie in a single Gunrun, switching to Elephant Gun for the last bit of the damage to conserve rocket ammo. Took U/C as early exit because of Acid/Lava rivers -- I could've kited Angel of Death, but I *really* didn't feel like it.

Stairdived the rest of the way down, partly because of ammo concerns, but mostly because I'd already missed 100% kills and felt pretty bored of the run at this point (this is why I will likely never finish Angel of 100). Gunrunner is insane for stair-diving, for obvious reasons -- You literally just blast your way to the exit, and the knockback on the Elephant Gun is often enough to keep enemies out of LOS. Spider Mastermind wasn't even a fight, I had four large medpacks and Blue Armor, I wasn't even trying to take cover against her.

Who knows, maybe I'll actually get a non-LT/MC/OC Nightmare! win at some point. I'd like to actually get good (lol, "good", you guys have set way too high a standard that I'll likely never reach) at this game before retiring forever, and I'd definitely like to do that before Jupiter Hell gets released. I think I made a mistake in playing so much Ultra-Violence, I think I acclimatised to the difficulty and picked up some bad habits that aren't serving me so well in Nightmare!, though I couldn't identify what those habits are.

Requests For Features / Survivalist buff idea

I think Survivalist is generally acknowledged as being pretty underwhelming, so I figured I'd suggest: instead of having a 50% shot at reducing 1 damage to 0, maybe it could just remove the 1 damage floor against your character, so that resistances and armour can reduce any given attack to 0?

If almost doubling its effectiveness is too unreasonable, you can remove the health pack overheal from the trait.

I've been on break from this game for a while, and Orandulum messaged me yesterday to let me know he'd beat UV Angel of Impatience. I casually mentioned that I'd never managed to beat it, and he expressed surprise on the grounds that he felt it to be an easier AoMs. So I figured I'd do a few runs.

It became pretty apparent in my first few attempts that Orandulum's assessment was not entirely correct. I survived the AoMs early game by abusing the fact that Marine can immediately take two levels in Badass and effectively be playing with 200% health, without compromising his ability to get Vampyre ASAP; the overheal-on-level-up aspect of AoMs actually makes the challenge very abusable for Marine. After a few failed attempts at getting Vampyre off the ground, I did what any self-respecting scrub would do and switched back to my usual Scout build.

Two things went kinda wrong. First, I was at scarily low (around 8%) health during one of my level-ups, which led me to buy a point in Iro (which immediately went to good use as I caught the edge of Mancubus splash before even taking an action; I'm reasonably sure I would have died without it). Second, shortly after buying Gunrunner, I hit tab and sprinted at the nearest enemy, only to find that I wasn't firing for some reason. Because, as you may have guessed from the title, I hadn't actually purchased Gunrunner, I'd mistakenly purchased Shottyhead. Contrary to my title, Shottyhead is not OP.

Of course, I'm a motherfucking Scout so I grab double invulns and stair-dive to the Mastermind.

After playing this game for a long time, you get a pretty good feel for what the AI is likely to do, you get to know the movement habits of various enemies and how to bait and whether or not you've got cover from them. Interesting thing about the Mastermind fight: I don't really know the Mastermind's AI at all, because I've never fought it "fairly", I've always punched it in the face repeatedly, Gunrunner'd it, nuked it, fired at it off-screen with Int(2), or just used boring old invulnerability. With a horribly underpowered trait and invulnerability worn off, it was time to learn; I took around 50% of my health trying to figure out where I could stand and how I could safely hurt it. I dealt the bulk of my damage with rocket launcher splash damage, but towards the end found myself kind-of-but-not-really kiting the Mastermind around pillars. Flinch really helped, as did slightly odd pathing behaviour around pillars near walls.

Bug Reports / [0.9.9.7G Linux] Barrel on teleporter exit

I decided to see what would happen if I pushed a barrel onto a teleporter exit tile. A little while later, I got an off-screen kill followed by an error. Game continued as normal.

Post Mortem / [U|AoMs|95%|YAVP] Masochism full win

In some ways this is a really lame Mortem; only two awards and three special levels to my name, with no exceptional weapon drops. Having said that, bragging rights are bragging rights (or they would be if I didn't rely on the most broken trait combination available).

This run was really difficult when I first started alternating it with HMP AoHu (which I'm still a long way off achieving), but after a little dedication, it wasn't long before I had this to that point where the only thing stopping me was dumb Hell mistakes. In this instance of the run, I got lucky and found three invuln globes right near the the Hell 5 exit, and spawned right by the Hell 6 exit; after some internal arguing, I figured I'd lose the 100% kills in favour of a full win, used a homing device on Hell 7, and dropped a nuke on the Mastermind. Then I punched Carmack in the face.

Vampyre is busted, to put it bluntly. At one point, I spawned right by a few Mancubi and two 'Viles, and came out of it with slightly more health than I began.

Spider's Lair happened because, once again, the exit was near an invuln, I probably could have taken it damagelessly had I cleared it in a more systematic pattern.

Necroarmour seemed to be pretty great.

I lugged some rockets around all game, but never once found a rocket launcher. One of the interesting aspects of Masochism is that without the medpacks, you have a lot of room to lug around situational items that you couldn't usually justify taking.

Post Mortem / [H|Stnd|100%|YAFW] First game back, first full win

Took a break from this game about a year-and-a-half ago, and on buying a new laptop, decided I'd fire it up again. My original plan was to replicate my old Running Shottyman UV Conq run, but I'd forgotten that you don't start with Ultra-Violence unlocked.

I figured I may as well use the lowered difficulty to practice melee, seeing as I never really took to the build despite it being obviously powerful. This worked out... quite nicely.

My memory of the run is already pretty blurry (melee runs all feel much the same), but there were a few memorable moments.

I almost took the Cyberdemon damageless, but he got a lucky shot through my high dodge chance (whatever, I was relying on luck anyway), at which point I just charged him down to finish it off quickly.

I got careless in The Vaults and had my fireproof armour destroyed by a Revenant, which forced me back into fairly conservative play. Sometime post-UC I started underestimating HMP enemies, and was also starting to lose concentration, despite having taken breaks for Doctor Who and dinner.

The Mortuary was actually surprisingly easy this time around; I'm not sure if this is a side effect of HMP or of melee being OP (or maybe I just had a good spawn), but I killed two 'Viles within the first few turns, popped a few blood skulls, hit things and killed more 'Viles then won. The real problem this run was actually the Lava Pits (which, funnily enough, I've never actually taken before). I kinda fucked up a little and totally forgot to use my enviro suit, so I burnt a lot of health packs, then towards the end of the level decided to take the Lava Elemental with my Missile Launcher, rather than in melee. Given how large these two screw-ups were, I'm not totally sure how hard the level actually is, but it definitely strikes me as being harder than Mt. Erebus, given the total lack of cover.

JC was actually blind luck. I'd made a lot of bad plays at this point in the run, and was totally out of medkits. I emptied a lot of missiles into him early on, but his spawns were starting to get too much for me, and I was unable to close the gap to use my Scythe; I was about to accept my defeat when he kindly teleported right next to me. Silly JC. (Also, nuking SM while invuln apparently doesn't earn you brain? Huh, makes sense I suppose.)

Vampyre is brilliant, though, I came out of the Abyssal Plains with more health than I entered thanks to the Lost Soul chamber. 10/10 would suck blood again. I figure I'm going to devote the next few days to gaining my old badges back (looking forward to UV ArchAoLT, favourite challenge), then start working my way towards getting a Nightmare! standard win (which I never did manage, despite a few N! challenge wins).

Bug Reports / Enemies don't respawn if killed on edge of map

On Phobos Base Entry, N! AoMC, I killed an enemy on the edge of the map like so:



After quite a lot of combat, I noticed he hadn't respawned yet, and found it odd. After waiting around the door so I could kill them all in it, I went outside to take their ammo, and noticed he was still dead. I experimentally waited for something like 20 000 turns, and he still hadn't respawned. I asked the sacred Google, and found no mention of this.

I... I really don't care to admit how many attempts this took me.

There's really nothing to say about melee stairdiving, I wouldn't bother posting this mortem at all, except it's got ego-boosting value as the first Nightmare! win I'm willing to accept as a 'legitimate' win (though it's still a pretty cheesy strat).

Oh, actually, one thing I found out: Int1 is kinda OP once you make it to Hell on Nightmare!; as a scout, one invuln plus stairsense is going to get you a long way, and in my experience, you're practically guaranteed to get at least two of those spawn in Hell. It'd take some seriously bad luck not to spend the entire last third of the game sprinting from stairway to stairway whilst invulnerable.

This is probably the first run I've actually planned for in any great detail, and it's been a lot of fun; I'm not quite sure how many attempts it actually took after planning (probably somewhere between ten and twenty). I opted for SM/MGr; Shottyman because the ability to reload the rocket-launcher on the move is a huge benefit for CC+ (probably the biggest stumbling block on Conqueror), and Gunrunner because of the obvious synergy between the two traits. Int2 was a logical choice after that (it's simply a good trait, and synergises well with mobile characters); everything after that was improvised. During my thinking, I came to the conclusion that Conqueror is primarily an exercise in inventory management; there are several items you will end up carrying very long distances just to complete single levels (most obviously the Arena Master Staff), so I spent a reasonable amount of time considering the issue (and reading this article on the subject).

My strategy for CC+ consists of hiding in the starting room, killing everything in doorways and the lava pits, and wait until the Arena Master comes into LOS, from where I juggle to launcher and SM my way to victory against him (I was lucky enough to have some extra rockets spawn in a vault).

The Abyssal Plains went every bit as well as one would expect with MGr/SM; Cornershoot everything, find the Agony Elemental, kill 'em all. Unfortunately, between The Wall and The Plains, I spent the majority of my shotgun ammo; the next few levels were pretty nerve-rackingly touch-and-go, and a few times, I ended up [counter-intuitively] switching to my missile launcher to conserve shells. Eventually, I managed to farm a former, which kept me going long enough to get to Hell (as an aside, beating the Cyberdemon with nothing but sprint and movement keys is an awesome feeling. I'm not quite sure why I don't have his head, but I spawned pretty close to him; my guess would be that missile splash got me).

Somewhere between Plains and Babel, I missed a kill; a commando had managed to get himself into a nicely-defendable position, and wasn't budging due to acid, while I was on low health; I didn't really want to waste multiple rockets on a single commando. This may have actually been a good thing though, because later on in the game, the Angelic Set really did a lot to save me from some of my less intelligent choices.

UC was the usual “kill souls, demons into lava, abuse speed for Angel” affair, but I brought a P-modded chainsaw with me this time to avoid another seventeen-hour fight. I exchanged it for the Longinus Spear, not yet knowing I was going to put points in Brute; I’d just heard about the Angelic Set before, and wanted to find out what it was beyond fancy equipment.

The Mortuary… is fun. Okay, so when I was planning my Conqueror run, most of my thought went towards this level, because it's probably the most talked-about, and because it's a level which has cost me two or three characters otherwise ready to win the game. Ultimately, I came to the conclusion that what I needed to beat it was more EXP, which would naturally come with a Conqueror run, and… well, I was wrong, but on the right track. I'd held onto my skulls from The Plains, and picked up a fourth along the way, and these usually-terrible items are game-breakingly powerful in the Mort. I initially moved for a Supercharge, detonated a fire skull, swept my way through the left on an MGr/SM rampage (which, for the record, is a true thing of beauty), where I made it to a second Supercharge. I then swept right a little on a second rampage, then fought mostly fairly (using Int to elephant-gun enemies outside LOS), detonating the occasional fire skull when I heard a ‘Vile nearby and the corpses were piling up. After taking some damage through careless play, I used my blood skull and went on a final MGr/SM rampage for the win. This… was a [very long] bloodbath, and has propelled The Mortuary to my favourite DoomRL level. About halfway through this level, I was seriously worried about my ammo supply, so on level-up, I put some points in Brute, figuring that I could fall back on melee if my ammo ever ran out (which, surprisingly, it never did).

Erebus was one of two relatively unspoiled levels for me (it, along with The Vaults, were levels of which I only really knew one basic fact about. I knew The Vaults were filled with cool shit, and I knew Erebus was home to something called a Lava Elemental, which dropped a Lava Element, which granted a few turns of invuln). Earlier on, I said that Conqueror is more about inventory management than anything, and Erebus was awkward for this reason; I had no clue (though I probably should have guessed from the name) that I might want an envirosuit. My shock when I spawned on an island surrounded by lava as far as my LOS was extreme. I killed all the elementals and souls, and blind-fired a few rockets into the distance, dismayed at the lack of hit-noises or ‘hear the scream of a freed soul messages’; I used up a small and a large medpack dashing across, figuring I could use a homing phase device to get back. Rest of the level was actually pretty easy, though I was surprised that the Lava Elemental wasn't related in any way to Agony and Pain. Unfortunately, I ended up using the Element almost immediately to cope with a truly terrible spawn the next level (no full win for me).

The ability to detonate all the napalm barrels I wanted and walk through the results with impunity is awesome, and actually really useful.

My biggest failing was Dis. With Juggler and Int, I really should have been able to deal more damage before the Mastermind came into LOS, and take the brain; emptying the BFG10K alone into her brought her to 'Wounded'. But whatever, Conqueror win is a Conqueror win.

Well, there's something of a story behind this mortem.

I've been aiming for Marksman Platinum for a while, and I've had some problems. Not with the difficulty (which is honestly pretty negligible after the first four or five floors), but with a curse that seems to be afflicting me exclusively on AoMr. This curse always strikes me sometime after Armoury/Lab (by which point the game should really be auto-win), and causes me to do something so stupid it kills me, typically within a single turn. Particularly memorable Curse of Stupidity deaths have included:
  • Ignoring barrel placement when choosing a cover position against a revenant
  • Deciding I don't need to wear my fireproof red armour against this one last mancubus
  • Due to a mis-keypress in my inventory screen, walking out into lava without activating my envirosuit pack

I almost lost YAAM on the unholy atmosphere level to a Mancubus trapped by lava, but there were enough healing globes on the level that I managed to get the kill and leave on full health; beyond that, there really wasn't any challenge to this run. Except the curse struck. I found an invulnerability globe quite close to the stairs down to the last level, and I had two nukes. Seemed perfect. Nuked Mastermind, went down a level. Placed nuke, waited a little. Then, at six seconds, my 'inv' indicator dulled. Shit.

Moral of the story: count invulnerable turns. I've never gotten to JC before, so I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure I easily had the resources to take him. My fire speed was through the roof, and I had quite a reasonable amount of ammunition. But no, Curse of Stupid strikes again.

Oh, also, I came across two interesting bugs this run. The first is shown in the attached file (storm bolter pistol is apparently 'not worthy of a marksman', despite still damaging and killing enemies); I believe this was caused through Juggler (I'd just juggled my empty energy pistol to my knife, then juggled my knife to my storm bolter; the problem was fixed as soon as I got to a peaceful part of the map and weapon switched through inventory and back again). The second, which, unfortunately, I didn't screenshot (though it's not particularly screen-shottable) involved a cluster of formers standing still until disturbed in much the same way pinky demons do; the key difference being you actually needed to shoot them to disturb them. This took a while to figure out, so I ate a few shotgun blasts as I tried to figure out what was going on.

I don't normally play HMP, but I wanted a gold badge for next rank, and I saw this one. I figured that melee stairdiving can't be that much harder knives-only, so I went for it. It took a night or so of attempts, but here it is.

There really wasn't any strategy to this aside from lucky invulns and punching things.

Discussion / Tactical Armour OP?

Okay, so from what I can gather, it used to be worse than it is now, but it's still pretty overpowered, and the problem comes about as a combination of factors.

1) Speed-built characters never need fear a monster again if they get Tac Armour; characters not built for speed are still doing ridiculously well with this, and probably don't have much to fear either.
2) It's assembled from three common drops, all of which drop from very early in the game.
3) It regenerates.

Point one is a characteristic shared with Phaseshift, but Phaseshift remains balanced by not being something you can rely on, and by punishing the player for sleep-deprived mistakes; you can screw up pretty monumentally with Tactical Armour, and it's okay, because you can retreat without being hit and your armour regenerates itself as if nothing happened. If you make a sleep-deprived mistake with Phaseshift, it may well be gone.

Point two is a simple case of "items should be balanced to their obtainance difficulty". Tactical Armour is very much an I-win card for certain builds, and it's still a highly viable option for everything except Entrenchment.

Point three was covered in point one; while Phaseshift is just as bad, if not worse, than Tac Armour, it forces you to keep your head and play sanely, it does not hold your hand and say "aww, you got shot, here, let me make it better for you".

Were I to nerf Tactical Armour, I'd remove regeneration, and maybe make it a Green + (A3) Advanced Assembly; the latter would be nice, but possibly overkill.

I probably don't need to explain how I got the Diamond, the tactic seems to be pretty openly discussed fairly regularly.

The eighteen hour playtime is because I took the tedious AoD fight minute blocks rather than as one consecutive fight, and ended up leaving the game running overnight at one stage (unmodded knives suck).

As for the win, that was mostly lucky. I wasn't quite sure what I was going to with HR2 and Fin2 without any survivability or damage boosts, so I figured I'd go for Int2 and try to outmanoeuvre everything for the win (and pray for a nuke to take the Mastermind). However, it turned out that the second level of Int wasn't necessary, because I was able to use Int1 to spend the entire game sprinting from invuln to invuln.

First Nightmare! win, and I probably won't have another one for a while, so I'm savouring the moment.

I get that this probably isn't a significant achievement, but I post it because I'm pretty pumped about my first (arguably second) Platinum (this is from someone who still can't get UV AoSh?)

Uh... yeah, this challenge is probably a little easier than its 'Blade' difficulty suggests, 30% speed boost is insane.

As for an actual commentary of the run, there isn't much to say. Stairsensed my way to CC with a shotty, got a lucky invuln chain going a few floors before Cybie, did UC because I've never done it before and I was on good health, took a few speed-boosting traits so I could hilariously outspeed anything that scared me too much.

Also, ignore the 5/35 success rate, I recently lost my playerdata recently, so I'm regetting some of my old badges (playing for badges I know I can get = fewer losses); I'm nowhere near as good as a 1/7 success rate.
