Announcements / Forum Changes
« on: May 13, 2006, 13:32 »
Okay, I've implemented registering via e-mail confirmation, and blocked anonymous posting. Seems as moderators won't have much to do now :). Yet if anything shows up from now, please don't delete it -- I will want to take a look.

Also, I plan on clearing the user database. I will remove all users that didn't make any posts -- so if anyone wants to keep a lurking account then please post at least a hello in this topic :].

Announcements / Forum upgrade
« on: May 07, 2006, 20:54 »
I upgraded miniBB to the latest version. I tried to do that without breaking any enhancements that were installed. It didn't work for the Poll system, but that's not such a big issue, for the Poll system was bad anyway ;-). As for the other features I don't know wether it succeded so if you find any bugs, please post them in this topic.

As for the recent spam attacks there is a solution -- although a drastical one: dissalow unregistered posting and enable e-mail confirmation when registering. During the lifetime of the forums there weren't many unregistered posters, and those that were didn't stay long/advance the community for too long (with the eception of Derek Yu -- but he registered now). So I don't know how uncomfortable it will be to force people to register -- please state your opinion.

Note also that if it would be implemented this system would stop spam COMPLETELY.

I'd like to inform you all that thanks to Turgors initiative DoomRL and ChaosForge has an IRC channel now. The IRC channel is located on irc.quakenet.org, name of the channel is #chaosforge. Feel free to drop by -- there's always someone idling, myself included.

Discussion / DoomRL programming crisis
« on: March 28, 2006, 15:31 »
Okay, having finished my education work, and beaten my writer's block that I had afterwards, I finally came back to writing DoomRL. Unfortunately I immidately bounced against a Wall (and no, I do not have a rocket launcher nor a phase device at hand) -- and that being DoomRL's sources ;-). Considering the list of features that I have in mind up to 1.0.0 things cant go on with the current codebase/design that DoomRL's sources represent.

I never lied to anyone about that -- DoomRL's sources are UGLY. And it's mainly because DoomRL was originally intended to be a simple prototype to test a few ideas -- I never thought it would mature up to a full-blown game. Unfortunately the current spagetti code get's worse with every feature I add, and some drastical changes are needed or else I'll wake up in the situation that no more improvements will be possible without a rewrite.

I have thought of it for a long time now, and managed to narrow my choice of action to two basic options:

1) Rewrite the DoomRL codebase. Basically start from scratch using huge chunks of the old code. That would guarantee that the code would gain structure, and that I could implement it having important features in mind (campaign mode, graphics, editing).

2) Reimplement DoomRL using the Carceri engine.

Both solutions have their strengths and weaknesses. Most are obvious, so as for now, I wont comment on it. Gimme your opinion, and mostly, please give me encouragement, for I am dreaded with the task lying ahead :-(.

Discussion / Next DoomRL version poll - please vote!
« on: March 04, 2006, 15:31 »
So my exams are finished at last! There are still a few things to do, but from the middle of march I'm resuming my work on DoomRL! Hence I have a question to ask to you -- many people ask me for additional features in the next version -- but the more features I will want to add, the more time it will take before DoomRL 0.9.9 is released. In particular, if I would like to add tiles to the next version already, it would take a lot of time (not to mention, that Derek needs time too). So the basic question is -- Would you like to see a new version sooner, with less features, or later with more?

Announcements / DoomRL in Computer Games Magazine
« on: February 23, 2006, 22:40 »
Hello all!

I mailed both the author of the article and the editor at Computer Games magazine about DoomRL mentions in the mag. I was plesantly surprised by the quick reaction -- I got two digitilized versions of the DoomRL mentions in my mailbox within an hour! Moreover I got a kind permission to share them with you guys :-D. So here they are:

Discussion / Funny : Google Search Queries
« on: February 12, 2006, 13:46 »
It is not a secret, that most servers store the search queries that led people to them. I recently took a look on the search strings that led people to chaosforge.org and it's subdomains (most notably doom.chaosforge.org and doomforum.chaosforge.org). Some of the queries were so hilarious, that I wanted to share them with you :-). Here are the best ones IMHO (format #rank hits percentage searchstring):

Jan 2006:
#7    3    2.59%    10mm ammunition
#8    2    1.72%    6d3 gun

Bug Reports / Known Bugs - check here before you post! [0.9.9.6]
« on: January 29, 2006, 19:58 »
The following is a list of known bugs, or issues that are known not to be bugs. If you see any of these during your game experience, please do not report them in the forum.

  • My game crashed while I was playing Angel of Marksmanship/Shotgunnery/Pacifism when I won/died!
    • There's a bug in the current release that causes the game to crash if an enemy dies while you're carrying a melee weapon you can't attack with on a weapon-restricted challenge. The crash itself won't occur until after the game ends (that is, upon death or victory). It has been fixed for the next release: we apologize that the bug made its way into 0.9.9.6. A more detailed explanation and precautions towards avoiding this crash can be found here.
  • Fireangel doesn't seem to be doing what it's supposed to.
    • The Fireangel master trait is currently bugged not to work. It's been fixed for the next release: we apologize that the bug made its way into 0.9.9.6.
  • I just saw a barrel explode before the shot reached it. WHERE'S THE CAUSALITY?
    • This is not a mechanical bug but rather an animated one: it does not have an effect on the gameplay. It will be fixed in due time, some cases being granted exceptions to simultaneous animation, others outright improved in terms of causality.
  • Help! I'm being attacked and there's no one in sight!
    • This is an unfortunate side-effect of the current vision algorithm. It will be fixed in due time.
  • I got a full victory, but I didn't get any badges or medals for it. What the heck?
    • This is intentional: a full victory does not imply that the game has been "won". There are conditions by which the game will award you a standard or full victory, but without surviving the full-victory boss: in these cases, you will not receive badges or medals that require you to complete the game. Note that, in a later release, partial victories may also differ from standard victories in terms of awarding certain badges and medals.
  • Why aren't my projectiles hitting the enemy whenever they get knocked back?
    • There is currently an inconsistency between a projectile's calculated path and the direction at which enemies are knocked back. This will be fixed in due time.
  • Why does it feel like I barely deal any damage to an enemy that's directly hit by the BFG9000?
    • Currently, knockback is calculated and occurs before damage is taken, so the victim only takes damage based on where it lands after knockback, rather than its original position. This will be fixed in due time.
  • I dropped an item and now I can't find it anywhere!
    • This behavior is expected: Items will occasionally drop behind walls or into hazardous terrain, the latter of which will actually destroy the item. This is because only one item can exist on a single tile, so the game will search for the nearest unoccupied tile relative to the player before the item is placed.

Announcements / New DoomRL Webpage!
« on: January 26, 2006, 07:46 »
I've undertaken a project for my WWW Technologies class to create a CMS for my project, and ValkyrieCMS was born. Enjoy the new look of the DoomRL website, and don't forget to tell me what you think about it!

The new site is available from the new link -- http://doom.chaosforge.org/

I also took the occasion, and upgraded the DiabloRL homepage - if you never tried it, maybe now's the occasion?

Also both pages are now hosted on chaosforge.org. Update your bookmarks, and if you know a site with the old links still there, mail them so they update them!

Poll Link

DoomRL Forum uses a quite simple forum script, namely minibb. There are a few reasons I chose minibb instead of a more "feature packed" forum software. The main one is that te forum needs to be lightweight, especialy in terms of database size -- I've got a fixed limit of 20MB on the forum database. Second reason is that I wanted to keep control over the features. And third - it needed to be easy skinnable.

All three reasons are still valid, but I am conscious that minibb lacks a few features, most notably it lacks any kind of "unread messages" system. Taking some time to look at the source made me conscious that a "unread messages" system would be a pin in the ass to code, and would take some time (which could be spent on development instead).

OTOH, if I'd install a new forum, then skinning it so it is doomish might be a problem, especialy if the interface is complex :-/.

Hence I give you the above poll. Bare in mind the problems I noted when voting.

As I wrote quite a bit about DoomRL there, and don't want to repost it here, I allow myself the liberty of shamelessly advertising my blog update here

You can post DoomRL-only related comments here also.

Discussion / Sorry, could not resist...
« on: January 03, 2006, 06:24 »
Looking at the wiki I saw that Turgor, Thomas and others try to find out the stats for the enemies... Well, I could not resist: here's one (don't count on more ;-)) data constructor for a DoomRL monster - the former human:

Races.Add(IDFormer,'former human','former humans', NewPic('h',lightgray),
9, 6,10, 7,   10, 90, 21, 0,12, ID_Pistol,2,0,0,'former');

Yup, the sources are very poorly documented :-(. Now let's see how much of what is what you can figure out of it ^_^.

« on: December 30, 2005, 07:15 »
Hello All,

I just write this quick note to inform you all that I'm leaving for 3 days. I don't have time to reply to posts now, so I'll take a look at them after I return. As you probably noticed that means that there won't be a DoomRL release this year :-(. I hope to finish a release in January.

Happy New Year everybody!

Phew, I added separate forum images for each sub-forum, and fixed the avatars so they have transparent background. You may need to force-refresh to see the changes (usualy Ctrl+R).
