1223 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 1126 of those were killed.
6 of those were killed by something unknown.
10 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
And 59 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

 22 souls destroyed the Cyberdemon...
5 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
17 killed the bastard and survived.

--------------------------------------------------------------

This was one hell of a game. I knew that I had gotten hammered throughout the game, but apparently I got the Iron Skull. On AoHu. The only reason that I survived at all was that for the early part of the game I had a steady stream of red armors and power mods. Also, I got spammed by large medpacks. For quite a few levels I would find 4 or 5 large medpacks, 2 to 4 small medpacks, about 3-4 small health orbs and 1-3 large orbs or zerk packs.

I would have never done the UC without having found both a hatred skull on level 14 and the shielded armor on level 13. While zerking and wearing the shielded armor, the AoD could only do 1 point of damage to me per hit. It was rather stupid of me to ditch the chainsaw if I had any idea about doing the UC, but I managed to get through it with a chainsword. I went into the level zerked and invulnerable, and I blew through the lost souls and demons while invulnerable. The invuln ran out about halfway through my fight with the AoD, and the zerk three quarters of the way through. However, since I had that hatred skull, I grabbed more zerk time to finish the battle with.

For quite a while throughout this game, I thought that I would have to settle for second best and not get a full win. I went into the Mortuary to try to get the Nuclear BFG so that I could nuke the Cyberdemon, but a Mancubus blew it up while I was 2 squares away from it. Cursing all the mancubi that had stolen items from me throughout my time in DoomRL, I went on a rampage and cleared out the Mortuary. To do it, I swept from the right to the left while firing my BFG, and I cleaned up individual enemies with my HP Plasma rifle. Any left-over corpses received a rocket from my Revenant's Launcher. I didn't run out of ammo because I had a massive amount of plasma when I went into the Mortuary, and I kept having to re-kill Commandos, so I could pick up more plasma there.

On level 24 I found a nuke, and so then I decided to go for a full win. I also found an invuln near the stairs to Level 25, and so I grabbed that and ran down and nuked the Cyberdemon. Then, I had the Lava Element left for JC. I quickly ran to the right of the map while on the remnants of the invuln that I nuked the Cyberdemon with, and I took a rocket right as the invuln was about to run out. I activated the lava element and gunned JC down before he could react or summon more enemies. Good thing too, since I was out of health packs by that time.

Some notes from this game:

Revenant-only levels are almost guaranteed death if you don't have a timely invuln globe. The same goes for Arachnotron levels.

Marine is really good for this challenge because it allows you to take Ammochain, which in turn frees up a lot of your inventory for more medpacks and armors. Also, the increased powerup duration is critical, since zerks and invulns are what's going to keep you alive.

It wasn't as hard as I thought to go through the entire game without Badass. Make no mistakes, it was hellishly difficult (pun intended), and for about half the game I thought that I would be dead in a moment. What I found is that speed and tactical defense are far more important than having more endurance, since Ironman gives you a pitiful amount of extra health. I'm not denigrating it though, and I took 5 levels of it.

Also critical is having a consistent source of knockback. My standard tactic for dealing with nearly every late-game enemy is to knock them back out of my sight range, so they can't fire at me. Another important source if damage reduction is sheer offensive might, since it's harder for them to attack you if you cut them down with plasma first.

Another tip is to play AoHu like you would play AoMc, except if only your enemies had the maxed damage. Make sure that you don't get hit whenever possible, but when you have to, try to get knocked back into cover, and avoid lava like the plague.

Inventory management has to be very different for this type of game. I would recommend that you carry 4-5 armors, 2-4 power or bulk packs for the armors, 4 stacks of ammo, one stack of rockets, and everything else is medpacks or phases. By the end of the game, I would have dearly loved to have had those extra medpacks and phases that I should have taken with me. Feel free to experiment your inventory, and tell me if anything works better.

Also, does the iron skull count pre-armor, pre-zerk, pre-invun damage, or does it only count the actual damage that you take? I know that for almost the entire game, I was running from one health globe to another.

Final Notes:

For this game, you need a massive amount of luck. I barely managed to get through this challenge, and I found fifteen invulnerability globes throughout the game. Also, take this one slowly, and think about what you are doing. My normal game time is 45-60 minutes for a UV run, so taking that extra 20 minutes really helped me out, as I was able to make fewer dumb mistakes.

There really aren't any words I know that can describe the magnitude of this run's victory over DoomRL as a whole. I mean sure, there are runs that simply require a "fair" amount of luck and a ton of know-how, but this sounds like one of those one-in-a-million games. Most people burn them on Pacifism Diamond instead, but to have the willpower to perform this on AoHu instead is astonishing.

I guess I will just point out the stuff that is particularly impressive:

He played for 1 hour, 19 minutes and 33 seconds.
My normal game time is 45-60 minutes for a UV run, so taking that extra 20 minutes really helped me out, as I was able to make fewer dumb mistakes.
You'd STILL have to be moving along rather quickly to get this kind of score, especially with the 90%+ kills. I suppose I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of this came from later levels rather than earlier ones (that is, having the equipment necessary to take down anything can be done faster than early-game killing of relatively easier groups). I bet Mortuary added a good 400-500, in fact.

Normally I'd consider stopping by all of the levels for the Explorer badge would be difficult enough, but you almost finished ALL of them. In fact, you DID finish all of them, but I think there was some respawning that prevented some levels from being considered "complete". I'm actually considering disabling respawns in N! special levels...but making them a whole lot harder to compensate. (Think nightmare enemies.)

The Iron Skull is just ridiculous. I'm not sure you should have gotten it...I mean we're talking about 10000 damage. Your health at the end of the game may have something to do with it: invulnerability, in addition to making you immune to all sources of damage, constantly restores your HP to 100% if it's lower, so there may be something suspicious going on with that. Either way, you probably deserve it, even if you only took a tenth of that.

For quite a few levels I would find 4 or 5 large medpacks, 2 to 4 small medpacks, about 3-4 small health orbs and 1-3 large orbs or zerk packs.
That sounds like the luck you'd need to survive "from one health globe to another".

It's a shame you weren't able to make use of the sniper pack, 100% accuracy can really come in handy. (That's 100% even outside of your field of vision, by the way. No shot will go wasted!)

I had no idea this was something even attainable. Maybe N!, with the double health and powerups, is actually easier than UV when it comes to the harder challenges? I think I need to sit down...

I was vainly hoping to use the Sniper pack on my BFG with a nano pack and a firestorm pack. I had originally tried to use my sniper pack on my HP Plasma rifle, but apparently I can't. Is there a list somewhere of what assemblies are moddable?

Oh, and it appears that I had a typo in the mortem dump. When I looked back at my health in the mortem, it said 22/22. Apparently, what happened is that I had clicked when I was trying to scroll down, and later when I typed it overwrote my health. Whoops. I'm not exactly a careful typist, so things like this happen to me all the time.

File upload of the mortem:

From the Wiki (and I can confirm that this is correct):
Quote from: DoomRL Wiki: Assemblies
Assemblies can also be modded in limited circumstances. If the player has the second level of Whizkid before the assembly is finished, they may then add a single mod to that assembled item.
This is the only exception to modding assemblies. TBH I'd rather it get removed in 0995, I don't like to have to consider super-combo possibilities in addition to balancing them not to be too weak/strong as a standalone product. It leads to things like P-modded tactical armors and assault rifles, or S-modded hyperblasters and assault cannons, or basically anything attached to stuff like power armor, plate armor, and the master assemblies. (Assemblies will be getting an overhaul for 0995, definitely for the better.)

Now I have to try that. Sometime in Ao100, I want to get A-Modded Gravity Phaseshift Boots, P-Modded Power Armor, and a S-Modded Demolition Ammo Minigun or a S-Modded Railgun.

Any requests for my next challenge attempt?

Personally I'm ok with 1-mod assemblies. Dumping an extra trait into Whizkid is a significant drain on your traits, especially if you're not a Technician. And DoomRL is hard enough already. I would be happy about that only if, as AnderHammer recently said, "R, M, & V become more Doom-like and less hax."

So does this mean tormuse has competition now? :P

Wait...  what?...  Wait some more...  seriously, what?  2DeviationsOut, do you realize how mind-bogglingly incredible this is?  :o

Game Hunter has already commented on the things that make this incredible, so I'll just reiterate briefly:  Angel of Humanity, 92% kills, 1 hour 19 minute gameplay, *almost* conqueror, (including clearing HA and The Mortuary!) all at Nightmare difficulty, and an Iron Skull on top of everything else = Mind Blown!  o_O

...but this sounds like one of those one-in-a-million games...

1223 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 1126 of those were killed.

Apparently, it was one-in-a-thousand!  :|

So does this mean tormuse has competition now? :P

Hey, I'm just a guy...  2DeviationsOut is the new God Hand here, even if not in name.  :P

Also, take this one slowly, and think about what you are doing. My normal game time is 45-60 minutes for a UV run, so taking that extra 20 minutes really helped me out, as I was able to make fewer dumb mistakes.

I find this line kind of funny because I always move really slowly in the game.  (Except for my Speedrunner Diamond, obviously)  ;)  If you look at any of my mortems, you'll see that I generally take several hours, if not days, and 1 hour 19 minutes is *way* faster than any Nightmare game I've ever played.  It's just funny to me that you consider it slow.  :)

I wondered about that...  A marine with Iro 5 in AoHu has a max of 22 hitpoints, so in order to take 10,000 damage, you would need the equivalent of 454 large med-packs!  :o  I'm guessing you didn't actually find *that* many, so I'd guess that some quirk in the invulnerability programming is the most logical explanation.  Even so, I must say that I never thought I'd see someone get Iron Skull without the Vampyre trait; that's just...  insane!  :o

Now I have to try that. Sometime in Ao100, I want to get A-Modded Gravity Phaseshift Boots, P-Modded Power Armor, and a S-Modded Demolition Ammo Minigun or a S-Modded Railgun.

My favourite is still the Firestorm-modded Hyperblaster.  It kicks serious ass!  :D

Any requests for my next challenge attempt?

Well, since you asked...  For a while, I was trying to get the never before achieved Inquisitor Diamond.  I was trying it with a Survivalist build with modest success, but never quite made it.  If you could achieve that, I would be impressed (again)  ;)  regardless of what build you use.

Well, you just have to make sure to have two enviropacks. If you do, and decent boots, then it's not bad at all. The Lava Elemental is a nasty enemy, but I blew him away before he could even shoot at me.

With the increased power-up duration of Nightmare and Marine, you only need to go in with one envirosuit, really.  Just head straight to the other end and/or use a phase device (if you're feeling really bold) and pick up the three envirosuit packs that are there.  (That's what I normally do, but easier said than done on AoHu, I guess)
