Congrats on your first win! Your insisting on playing [H] right of the bat is the way to go, I also couldn't bring myself to play HNTR from the very first day I witnessed the greatness that is DoomRL xD

Wanted to comment a little on that -
Quote
AoLT actually doesn't do all that much in teaching you inventory management if you ask me. This morning I've earned Lightfoot Gold (AoLT on HMP) on the very first attempt. Playing melee and then being lucky enough to find a special armor that has infinite durability kinda spoils the game :S But even without said armor, this particular challenge is actually a piece of cake on melee. I think playing a non-MAc rapidfire build (on Ao100) or MBD will go a lot further than that.
I just had my first "serious" AoLT run, and it was non-melee. In fact, it does teach a bit about inventory management, BUT it is not good as an "educational" run because it changes the entire game by making you 20% faster, and it's a HUGE factor which makes the game itself somewhat different. Easier, actually.

Quote
Very nice work on the win! Luckydee is right about AoLT not teaching you much about inventory. If anything you learn more from playing angel of impatience - playing with zero medpacks and zero phase devices make you appreciate how rarely you need them, and how nice it would be just to have *1* of them in your inventory! :D
Angel of Impatience is challenging, but it does not teach you about inventory management. Because you can't pick things xD It teaches you about not getting hit, I think, especially on special levels where there's next to none healing.

Quote
For the record, probably the most glaring 'unusual' trait of your inventory in this mortem are carrying hatred skulls around with you (when you've already passed the cathedral and the mortuary), carrying more than 2 spare armours, and carrying more than 1 stack of rockets.
Ha-ha! I am often guilty on all of these counts, too xD But usually after the mortuary I don't care much about what I carry, because the game is usually almost won, so there are usually skulls I didn't need to use in there or obsessively collected uniques or unused mods xD And there's nothing wrong with carrying extra rockets, especially right BEFORE the Mortuary.

But, wait, what?  No Lightfoot Diamond badge for no melee kills? I feel cheated, it was the whole purpose of the damn thing! Perhaps, I smacked some former human in melee? But I am almost sure I had no melee kills. I feel quite upset about not being rewarded for this run, because this one was very different and intense. My first AoLT win, too xD

Oh, wait, I remember having misclicked into a demon while being invulnerable, but I checked the message buffer, it said MISSED, not even hit and definitely not killed. Perhaps, something died when my hands were empty and it counted as a "fist kill" by some mysterious DoomRL logic - can this be a possible reason? If it is, then it's a pretty unpleasant glitch.

Oh, well.

What's to say about this run, I avoided most of the special levels, and the single most brutal moment was the Phobos Anomaly. I only had a T-modded chaingun and an assault shotgun with a shellbox, I cleaned out the ambush just fine by cornershooting from the right section of the map, but messed up with the brothers somewhat and had to retreat all the way to the start, AFTER which I realized I had no choice but to run right through them. I was down to 7% with no medkits zigzagging wildly to the exit, and as soon as I got away from the bruisers, there was a nightmare imp throwing fireballs at me. It was a miraculous escape, and the next level was a Cacodemon cave with an instant supercharge. Got the laser rifle in Deimos Lab, but after I got it from the warehouse I decided to chicken out on the shamblers. Wouldn't want to risk this quick and dirty run, especially having the perfect weapon for my build now.

I really liked this challenge, but before I try N!-AoLT again I think I should ask you DoomRL pros out there - what could be the reason for failing to get the badge? Nuking the mastermind? Aforementioned "fist kill" bug? Maybe, I also need to do it in less than 20k turns (as for the Platinum badge)?

Releases / Re: The Inferno Module
« on: April 08, 2014, 23:22 »
The greatness of this mod compels me to revive this ancient thread.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It's so good I'd love to see it as sorts of an "official" expansion for DoomRL after some balance tweaks and other adjustments. I hope the mod's author has not abandoned it, and I think it deserves way, way more attention (It doesn't help that you have to search for the ol' 0.9.9.6 to even launch the thing...)
As for the actual gameplay, I finished the above playthrough quite some time ago and only got to write about it now, so I might not remember everything in detail, still, here we go.
The mod is DOOMish as hell, I like how it mimics the E3M1 from the original game right from the start. The first level is a tad unforgiving and I had to die a lot, usually ending up on the second floor with no ammo and no healthpacks, and it is obvious from the start that the mod is somewhat harder than the original game. The gameplay is a bit slower, mostly because monsters "sleep" until you wake them up, but this is balanced by a DIRE shortage of medpacks, ammo and an occasional "you feel uneasy" ambush. It tends to get easier after Acheron, which is probably one of the hardest (and coolest) parts in the entire mod. The end boss was kind of a pushover, though.

But now for the interesting part - the new stuff! The sinking bridge in Hell Keep, the secrets (extremely doomish! though it kind of made me compulsively search every single wall in every special level xD), the random shambler lab or a non-guaranteed backpack cache on regular levels were all nice touches. The invisibility globe was a funny addition, in fact, I remember entering a level low on health and short on ammo and an invisibility globe nearby, which I grabbed and made my way quietly past stacks of monsters to an Invulnerability powerup displayed by Intuition. This kind of stealth action is something I don't see in my regular DoomRL runs. The "blue stairs" special levels were also fun, though they vary in difficulty wildly. Fool's Tomb? Ok, that's cute. Hell's Furnace? That hurt somewhat. Antenora? Holy freaking hell, I died here once already but I'll enter on this run again, because I'm just stubborn. Ptolomea? Thanks, but no thanks. The "red" special levels were all very good too (altough the Spawning Pits tended to get tedious after several runs), Singularity probably being the most intense. I like how the middle-game breakthrough, Acheron, really puts your character to test, it feels like you conquer every single step to the exit with blood, sweat, righteousness and superior firepower.

The new monsters were not particularly threatening, but they are all fun. I love the sounds that Asuras make (and the fact that they dropped shells for my Shottyhead run. Pity I wandered into Ptolomea with the same guy...)

And last but not least, this mod has, whatdoyoucallit, style? Atmosphere? It really is darker than the original DoomRL shootfest. The shadowy specters and achlyses, the darkness of Erebus, allusions to mythology in the names of special levels and new monsters, the corpses flowing quietly down Acheron, turning invisible, the stillness on the levels before you fire the first shot or wander into a roomful of enemies... this is certainly something different from the DoomRL RIP AND TEAR! And, one last thing - though it has nothing to do with the mod itself - it's a good thing it forced me to play in console mode. I usually play DoomRL in graphics these days, but this mod made me remember the true roguelike charm of ASCII which makes you apply your imagination more while playing.

Conclusion - Remake this for 0.9.9.7!

Nightmare! / [N!|94%|YAVP] Janitor Mode, huh?
« on: March 21, 2014, 13:43 »
So, having delayed tackling the Nightmare! for quite some time due to it ruffling my perfectionist feathers (What do you mean I can't safely kill everyone?), I finally did it right off the second try. I decided to play it safe and pick a build I'm comfortable with, Shottyhead, to the point of playing it so pussylike safe as to pick INT 2 immediately to not get unexpected respawns in my back and so on. Gotta learn to play less with Intuition, it spoils your tactical thinking a lot. Anyway, the run was unexpectedly easy - even before the RNG started favoring me with stuff.

Well, the early regular levels were not much different from UV expect from a quite fun sense of urgency and that lovely "I'm knee-deep in respawning undead" feeling, which I kind of started to like. Learning to use water and barrels and doorways to minimize later respawns was interesting, but I honestly don't think I could be patient enough to employ those to get 100% kill ratio. Leading cacodemons or hell knights to water and making them dri..., I mean, die, is very useful, but I can't be bothered to do it with every single former human. My first try at N! killed me on Hell's Arena, so I decided to skip it this time - I know it's doable by stacking corpses and utilizing cacodemon blasts, but I thought, screw it. Hence, the Chained Court was easy, and so was the Phobos Lab - the nightmare demons were still easily lurable into acid and knockbackable with shotguns. In fact, I'm glad the lab generated instead of the Military Base, because the base, I think, could have killed me easily with a super-shotgun packing former sergeant or a napalm-launcher former commando respawning at the inappropriate moment, even with Intuition. In fact, I really hate the Military Base even on UV.

Now the Anomaly was a fun twist. I was so accustomed to it being easy on UV that I honestly didn't expect the ambush to be that tough. Could have easily died in the leftmost room, but phased out right to the Bruisers, killed them, and decided to chicken out on clearing out the ambush.

Hell's Armory granted me the Holy Grail of Corpse Busting, and an all-around kickass weapon for Shottyhead - The Plasma Shotgun, which was the precise reason for my getting the Elite Diamond and clearing out Limbo. I could probably still beat N! with but the good ol' P-modded tac shotgun, but with less kill ratio and I'd probably stay the hell away from Mortuary/Limbo. Shortly after obtaining the Plasma Shotgun and reaching the Containment Area stairs, I was getting tired a bit and getting reckless and had to go anyway, so decided to (s)ave the game... and, yeah, NO ESCAPE FROM NIGHTMARE! GO AND FIGHT LIKE A MAN! Damn. Fine, DoomRL, if you wanna be like that, I'll just leave you alone for a while, and when I return, you're going down xD. Hence, the 15 hours of game time, that's just taking a break.

Abyssal Plains are not even worth mentioning, 'cause, come on, shotgun build and all, Cybie - Dodgemaster, and I could probably do the Unholy Cathedral if I didn't get a bit reckless and didn't forget to lead all the demons into lava. I think there's a diamond badge for doing it on N! without Bru, but, meh. Diamond badges, who needs 'em? xD

I entered the Vaults having picked up a Hell Staff earlier, so decided to break in on luck, and succeeded to get into the middle after burning one medkit. For some odd reason, I didn't get the Scavenger Diamond (is it UV only, or did some random revenant respawning prevent me from "clearing" it?), but I had achieved it before. The best thing was that I got the Malek's Armor right after getting Nyarlo-blahblah boots on the previous level, giving me 100% fire res. Too much favor from RNG, please! Once again, I don't think those were necessary for beating the game, but it sure made the Limbo an absolute walk in the park. It's fun to just stand there and let the Mancubi and Viles fire at you and burn away corpses xD

The rest was pretty obvious, I even got an invul sphere before Dis, so if I had two nukes I could even nuke JC (I had one thermie on the Phobos Anomaly, but I blasted it right before shipping off to Deimos. I always blast away nukes I don't need when leaving a level in hopes of getting Fallout Platinum xD)

So, that's it. Although I was heavily favored by RNG drops, I can safely say that the Nightmare! is not as terrifying as I thought it to be. I even get delusions of grandeur enough to one day hope for that 100% Angelic clean sweep, but I don't have that kind of angelic patience xD

Egad, you sure know your game. Impressive stuff there, especially since you make it sound so easy.
Thanks. DoomRL is *kind of* easy once you get the hang of things, although I still don't know or utilize many basic tactics, like, for example, gift-dropping, I never use it.

Nice victory! Well played, and I love your modpack drops! Actually, I play almost exclusively Nightmare, and usually go for 100% clearance. I very rarely actually get it - I end up with some disaster forcing me to homing phase for my life! But for at least the first half of the game I always have 100%. It just requires a lot of new tactics before you master the corpse disposal, which, as a 100% UV player, you'd probably really enjoy!
Speaking of which, had my first N! full win just a couple of days after, and 94% kills, no less. I honestly can't think of the patience it'd require to clear it 100%, because early game corpse disposal is way too tedious, for me at least. Will post the mortem in a jiffy.

Post Mortem / [U|100%|YAAM] MSc run, almost Quit when trapped
« on: March 19, 2014, 14:49 »
First of all, hi everyone! I've been playing DoomRL for quite some time now, back from when it was only ASCII, had no classes and Cybie was the main boss. Oh, the times when getting to The Wall was an achievement and entering the Unholy Cathedral or, god forbid, The Mortuary was completely out of the question! I started playing from HMP immediately, because, meh, playing Doom (or this interesting variation of it) on anything less is a sacrilege, and I thought, hey, it can't be harder than ADOM, can it? xD Now, getting 100% UV Conquerors on a regular basis, I still find this game lots and lots of fun, not to mention that there are still many Angel challenges I should try. Also, there's the Nightmare! difficulty, which I kind of hate, because it does not allow me to clear out everything and everyone xD

Usually, these days I like to run a Shottyhead/Gunrunner build, or a Sharpshooter, if I'm not playing an AOB. So, I decided, for a change, to try something that I thought must be kind of a lousy generalist build, and, voila - Scavenger. Turned out that with 2 INT, 3 Fin, Juggler, and later, HR/DM (not that I really needed those, just picked them out of habit) it is very much playable. Luck, though, is also a huge factor for Scavengers, but, hey, RNG favors or murders many a doomguy. So, here's the mortem, and after it, the good stuff.

292 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 260 of those were killed.
2 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
And 6 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

 24 souls destroyed the Mastermind...
2 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
10 killed the bitch and survived.
12 showed that it can outsmart Hell itself.

--------------------------------------------------------------

The early game was, well, kind of generic early game. The Hell Arena is a breeze on UV, especially as I decided to go for Juggler first, allowing me to swap shotguns and chainguns if the knockback wasn't enough to keep monsters away. I kind of got reckless in the Chained Court and fought the Arena Master with the rocket launcher in the open, burning away my medkits and rockets, but everything was fine in the end xD The thing I learned from this run was that the chainsaw (and later, the scythe) is actually a pretty reliable backup weapon with EE and Juggler. The Phobos lab was also easy with juggling around a shotgun and a double shotgun in the nightmare demons' faces, usually knocking them back into acid. Phobos Anomaly, Deimos Lab - everything nice and smooth, especially with Deimos Lab giving me TWO nano packs, one of which I put into making powered red armor, the other - into the rocket launcher, planning to turn it into nanomanufacture later. Assembling a T-modded hyperblaster was a good idea, as it turned out to be unexpectedly good even without rapid fire traits, in fact, good enough to bring down Cybie - also, HR2 was enough to sidestep all of his rockets but one.

I entered The Unholy Cathedral packing a P-modded ballistic vest, a gothic armor, a piercing chainsaw (thought to make a double chainsaw, but had tons of spare A-Mods and remembred that AoD was armored as hell), and a hatred skull, so didn't even have to use the aforementioned armors, just stood there in my powered red, having zapped the hate skull, and AoD went down very fast. Moreso, I had enough speed to circle him if I wanted to, but, thankfully, I didn't have to do this (the most tedious thing in non-melee Conqueror runs, really). Got to the vaults, disassembled the Trigun to get a THIRD nano pack, which later went into agrav boots. By the time I reached Mortuary, I lacked one B-mod to assemble the nanomachic RL, so when I entered, I zapped anothed hatred skull and ran all the way to the rightmost corner, slicing viles with the scythe to get the B-mod, assembled the Infinite Rocket Tube, and proceeded to clear out the Mortuary with ease. The T-modded nanomachic RL is sick, sick, sick, makes you feel like a one-man artillery unit.

And then I got to Mt. Erebus without the cerberus boots due to poor mod management xD (what a fine Technician huh), neither did I have an enviro, but I grabbed two phase devices from the previous level, so I thought, what the hell. It turned out to be the worst mistake in the run. The first phase put me INSIDE the island with the revs with no means of escape; killed the revs and used the second one in hopes of getting out... and appeared deeper in the island with the mancubi. Goddammit. The rockets, the BFG, - nothing brought down the walls. For a while, I thought that I messed up and will have to [q]uit, but then, I realized - hey, the Scythe's alt fire. I never used it ever, because losing stats is lame, but if I kill every single creature on the map, the Lava Elemental will teleport inside, I'll kill him, grab the lava element, and nuke the walls with the Nuclear BFG. I'll lose a nuke, and have to settle for a standard win, but what the hell. It took me three Whispers of Death, and it turned out that once you kill all the critters, the walls come down themselves, so I wasted the elemental and left Erebus both with a lava element AND my nuclear BFG intact. The fight with JC was, well, an uneven exchange of rockets, I didn't even bother to take advantage of Dodgemaster with that powered red armor, and, voila, another win.

So, all in all, it was a solid UV conqueror run, I wouldn't have bothered to post it like all my previous runs if it wasn't for that situation on Mt. Erebus which took me several minutes of firing rockets into the wall in frustration to come up with means of escape. Also, I always wanted to say thanks to Kornel and the team for this masterpiece of roguelike gaming, and it'd be impolite to come without an offering of a UV mortem and 1500 dead hellspawn xD

See you around, doomguys and doomgals.
