Wow. I've never heard anyone talk maxing out their system specs for a roguelike before. That's awesome.

In some ways, the hell knights in CC+ are easier to deal with than cacos. If you cornershoot from inside the first room, hell knights will only be able to approach you along the safe paths between the lava, so you have more control over where they move. If they manage to get all the way to one of the door tiles, next to your cornershooting position, hopefully they'll already be injured enough that one last push into the lava will finish them off.

As long as you don't over-specialize, melee characters should do fine in AoMC. By that I mean: don't drop every weapon besides the chainsaw. Keep getting most of your kills with ranged weapons and only use melee when it's absolutely appropriate.

The Angel of Death is tough, but actually not any tougher in AoMC than in regular games. He does 1d3+15 damage, meaning that in regular games he does 17 damage per attack on average, and in AoMC he does... 18. Non-melee characters should actually have an easier time fighting him in AoMC than in regular games because your attacks are guaranteed to hit, and for max damage, even without any points in brute.

Red armor definitely isn't enough, since 18-4 is still 14 damage per attack. Wearing ballistic red armor, you'll still take (18 x 0.7) - 4 = 8 or 9 damage, depending on how the engine rounds off numbers. What you want is a lot of melee resistance, which you can get from berserker, malicious blades or just some really good armour. If you're lucky enough you'll find a ballistic vest, which you can mod into a ballistic ballistic vest. Using a hatred skull in UC is a good idea if you have none of the above advantages.

Do phaseshifts make better antigrav boots than other boots without a movespeed cost? According to the wiki you should end up with +50% move speed either way.

According to my player.wad, I've assembled tactical boots... 33 times. That's actually lower than I expected.

I usually have my eyes on the endgame, so if WK2 is part of my build I always wait until I have it before I assemble the tac boots so I can add the extra A mod. Fun fact: You can also A-mod antigrav boots, despite the +50% movespeed cap when assembling them. They become +60% after, which is fairly insane.

I've never made cerberus boots - I rarely have so many power mods lying around that I can stick two on my footwear. I made environmental acid-proof boots once. It actually lowers their acid resistance. I've made lava boots often, though; I don't see them as a waste of an onyx mod. My feeling is that if my armour is getting destroyed that's my own fault, but if I can walk in lava with impunity that's a potentially huge tactical advantage.

Dying with a 100% kill rate should be worth a medal.

Haha, good point. I guess it doesn't happen very often.

The next challenge on my to-do list is Angel of Impatience. I figured I'd use rapid-fire Scavenger builds for this one, partly because the extra challenge is forcing me to play carefully (active, passive and tactical defence are all quite weak while this build gets going) and also because I wanted to see if the Scavenger trait could get around the tricky restrictions on mod use that this challenge imposes. The answer: yes! If you find a mod before you have a use for it, slap it on a random pistol that's lying around and just dismantle the weapon later. For the curious, once you've taken apart a modded weapon in AoI, the mod remains in your inventory, where it can be used at your leisure. No time to waste? We'll see about that.

In this particular game, I found a plasma rifle in a vault on the first level of Phobos. This was a great safety net for the first few levels and helped me get the Hell Arena Key badge, something I almost never earn thanks to my careless playstyle. I killed the Arena Master by chainfiring the rifle, which is just as turn-efficient as rocket-jumping into his face and chainsawing him, while considerably less risky. Side note: I was astounded to find out the first time I got this far that you can't even pick up the Arena Master's staff on this challenge, which makes the vaults impossible to complete (since you can't carry phases either). The mods and XP still make CC+ worth doing, but I'm less than thrilled.

The wall was quite doable thanks to a shell box I'd found a floor or two above, but I was careful to gib all corpses as they dropped since a slowpoke character like this with no portable health is very vulnerable here. This is usually where I drop the rocket launcher from Hell's Arena but I saved it so I could rocket-jump out of the demon horde on Phobos Anomaly. I usually forget about that alt-fire but it's surprisingly effective in the right circumstances.

The lab cache in Hell's Armory had an onyx mod, which is a great find in this challenge. Even though you can't slap it on a weapon and use it later with Scavenger, an easy pair of lava boots is great when you can't carry envirosuits around. This also let me grab the supercharge from behind the lab - a little treasure I only recently discovered.

City of Skulls was the beginning of the end. I stupidly got nearly-surrounded by the agony elemental's spawn, and in retrospect I should have rocket-jumped away to save the majority of my HP. I optimistically used the blood skull he dropped hoping to get a few HP back, but, of course, nothing happened. The next level after that was an arachnotron cave with no healing items except for a single health globe, and the stairs to Spider's Lair. I was just walking around the level, collecting scraps of ammo and thinking about my disturbingly low chance of survival no matter which stairs I took, when I accidentally walked into one completely isolated lava tile, my lava boots stowed safely in my bag.

I think that the last time I entered Spider's Lair I was playing AoMC, and I started it off with some BFG shots. If that doesn't destroy a teleport tile (and it didn't), nothing will.

Corpses disappear if killed on open door tiles. I think that's because there's no good ASCII character for "corpse in open door" so the developers decided to simply erase the corpse from existence instead.

What I like about the base entry levels is that they're the one place in the entire game where you can use cover that the enemy's don't treat as cover. A former human will shoot an entire clip into a tree, giving you a free turn while he reloads.

But yeah, I'm not a big fan of all those things you mentioned.

Not to diminish your struggles or anything, but I'm honestly at a loss how City of Skulls can be causing anybody trouble outside of AoMr or non-blademaster AoB runs. A major part of the problem is that you're actually over-preparing. Blasting the agony elemental with rockets will just scatter the pain elementals and lost souls that it spawns and leave you surrounded. Just keep bathing the agony elemental and its spawn in shrapnel damage and they'll die before they leave their starting tiles. Also, lost souls do 3 damage on average, so unless you're planning on meleeing the agony elemental, wearing any armor with more than 2 protection is fairly pointless and will just drag your move speed down. Wear light armor or go naked so that you can actually run when you need to.

That leads seamlessly into my challenge idea:

Angel of Onyx. The player is indestructible and cannot move. You can only complete levels by getting blasted in the direction of the stairs.

I beat AoLT on UV with a MBM scout and it wasn't at all strenuous. The combined scout and Light Travel speed boosts give you a ridiculous advantage right from the start, which only gets more extreme if you focus on speed traits and gear. Light travel is also much easier than AoB in that you get to keep a secondary ranged weapon or two.

0.9.9.6 / [U|AoMC|74%|4|YASD] I have been judged unworthy
« on: May 18, 2012, 14:23 »
Here's a quick one. Playing Max Carnage, I descended to depth 4. I found myself surrounded on three sides by demons, a shotgun guy behind some barrels, and a pain elemental and his pre-spawned souls. After some awkward maneuvering to keep the shotgun guy from blowing up the barrels in my face (I couldn't kill him as the barrels were in the way) I was overcome by the lost souls. My mistake was not equipping the blue armor, which would have made the lost souls much more survivable.

I'm posting this just because the gods of DoomRL have clearly judged me as wanting. I am not destined to be their champion. A minigun and a powermod in a depth 2 vault, in AoMC, is something I will have to earn.
