The restriction is unintuitive as fuck and pretty pointless to boot.
Great reason to keep it in, I gather.

The difference is that pistols with high levels of SoG+SoB do a fuckton more DPS (and damage at the high skill levels) than shotguns.

Wouldn't getting into a position where he can't fling you offscreen (i.e. ahead of a pillar so that the knockback will only knock you into it) be a solution to the knockback problem?
of course that implies getting there in the first place

And well, Nethack isn't exactly the roguelike you should refer to when you want fun gameplay. (It's a funny game, but the gameplay isn't all that fun.)

So it is indeed a Good Thing that DoomRLGuy (who is much wussier than Doomguy unless we count OP items) can squeeze through walls.

On Shottyhead build, Nano super shotgun(P) is arguably best, as it does not need reload.
It would actually be rather terrible, because nano weapons only start generating ammo after more time than it would take you to take a single step to reload through shottyman.

There's no reason to quit, because there's always the astronomically improbable chance of miraculously getting hilariously good rolls and if you don't get them you'll just die anyhow.

I started playing back in like where there was only console, and DoomRL is probably one of the lightest ASCII game experiences you'll have - since all the glyphs are sensible, appropriately colored and there are almost no duplicates.

Now go compare this to something like DCSS and you'll see what I mean.

DCSS has expiration (soon to expire) messages for most positive status effects, and I can't imagine it being a bad inspiration to take from.
Because in the worst of situations where you'll likely be very focused on tracking what's going on it is much harder to spot small color differences across a single action - whether you're great at such things or not.
