Discussion / Unused master traits! What should we do to give them more love?
« on: March 14, 2012, 02:36 »
I reckon there are some master traits that get very little love from our community. For example, I haven't seen any mortems that have the scout master Running Man (MRM) and marine master Survivalist (MSv). I think Entrenchment doesn't get any love too? Anyway, let's talk about master traits that feel underpowered and what can be done to make them more pickable.
I think MRM's bonuses are not too bad: running is a great effect, and this doubles the run time plus negates all the negative effects of running. The pre-reqs are pretty nice too: 2 Fin gives you access to WK, and Dodgemaster is always useful. Maybe it just doesn't sound not sexy enough. Running Man sounds like training for a half marathon? Possibly all that is needed is a rename.
MSv: The ultimate passive defence build - every pre req is geared to boost your HP or lessen loss of life. It does seem great on paper for ensuring survival. But lacking teeth isn't really an option in Doom RL - the best way to stay alive is to neutralise the enemy. I'd be interested to know the reasoning behind this trait, and especially why large medpacks only heal you to a max of 150%.
MEn: Maybe chainfiring players don't want to get shot and hide behind corners mostly, and the resistances don't matter that much? I mean, every tome that I've read about chainfiring says to hide in a nook or a corner and fire away, instead of walking into a crowd. How about something like Triggerhappy Plus, where you fire 2 extra free shots for every rapid fire weapon?

Requests For Features / Quicker graphics animation
« on: March 13, 2012, 17:16 »
I just know that I've seen this idea recently, but I can't find the thread now and really wanted to see this as an option. Is there any way to reduce the animation speed to be comparable to the console version. Right now the only thing that prevents me from playing the graphics version on a long term basis is the slowness of the animation. I can't get used to it and keep hitting keys too fast = YASD.

Century Lounge / [M|Ao100|YAVP] Angel of 10,000 shotguns!
« on: March 12, 2012, 19:30 »
Whew that was a good run. My 3rd Ao100 and the only successful one so far. In my previous runs I decided to go Scavenger and rapid fire, but they didn't work out because of my lack of knowledge on how to play a rapid fire build. So this time I reverted to my favourite shotguns and all was well... I alternated between a focussed double shotgun and plasma shotty, with a tactical RL for gibbing and wall destruction.

Discussion / Help me understand guns that are not shotguns
« on: March 11, 2012, 05:42 »
I have played shotgun based builds ever since I first found DoomRL and recently, have been tempted to learn the art of rapid firing. But I am horrible at it and keep dying. How does it work?
Eg, let's say I open the door to a wide open space, and fire the shotgun to scout for bad guys. I hear some bad guys. What do I do? I can't possibly wait around for them to advance and engage them one on one and I can't shoot them in the darkness because I don't know their location. I've tried Int based builds and it seems to alleviate the problem somewhat, but how do people do Ammochain builds and all that stuff?
Edit: Also, what guns are recommended early/mid/late game? If I am planning on Whizkid, what should I aim to build around or save mods for? I like the guaranteed Chaingun from HA, and I can put together an assault chaingun using CC and the Armory mods, but what else do I do? I understand that plasma builds are great in the endgame when bullets bounce off enemies, but what do you aim for when building?
Also, ammo balance. I can't figure out how much of each to carry. My last few runs packed 1 RL/1 rockets, 1 shotgun/2 shells, and about 5 bullets, 5 cells. It does seem like an awful lot of stuff...

Discussion / Let's take on the Mortuary!
« on: March 09, 2012, 09:34 »
Right, here we go. Doom RL's most feared level. What are your tips for clearing the Mortuary? Which challenges do you attempt it on?
I just finished my first ever Mortuary clear on HNTR, so I do feel pretty pumped. I had a gameplan, which was to save every single power cell and spend them all there. I had about 7 stacks of 70x cell and 2 bulk modded BFGs, and took 2 skulls from the City of Skulls, and was playing a intuition shottyhead build. Once I spawned, I hit the ground running and shot great balls of plasma at every pink asterisk, particularly if it sounded like a Vile. So I got lucky and managed to wipe out all 4 Viles at the beginning, and the rest was clearing up.
It's a shame that the BFG destroys pretty much all the rewards, though. I was left with 2 armor shards and 2 supercharges, and a nuclear BFG. The rest was all collateral damage.
So, anybody have any stories to share?

Finally! I like shotguns, so naturally I like AoSg. The game has never seen fit to bless me with a Jackhammer while doing so. But!! today, the RNG likes me a awful lot... I had my favorite Elephant Gun, with a Jackhammer, and game decides to bless me with a Super Shotty and a Necroarmor too. And a GCB too.
If I were a gambling man I would have entered the Mortuary. But life was going too well to attempt a suicide mission. Maybe next time...
Oh, and Intuition is bah-roken. I didn't take much damage after getting Int 2. The scout has officially replaced marine as my class of choice. I used to go for MAD, but Int 2 just makes things too fun. Instead of blowing them away with 1 shell, why not hide behind corners and out of sight and snipe them with a shotgun? Too fun...

Discussion / Good squarish terminal font for Doom RL?
« on: February 01, 2012, 10:31 »
I just had a pretty embarrassing YASD because I thought the sergeant was further than he really was because of the font - he was above me by a couple of spaces and I decided to just wing it. Unfortunately he was nearer than I thought and my lack of health caught up with me. It's rather hard to judge distances because of the font. I'm wondering if anybody uses a squarish terminal font to alleviate this problem? Something like this from X@COM:
