Nightmare! / [N|Ao100|97%|61|YASD] Who needs ammo when you have Acid Spitter?

Finally a decent start on N! Ao100, last ten or so attempts got me screwed at L3 or below, and two lasted to L8 and L12. This round got me blessed with this creepy vault:

There was a VERY handy berserk pack pretty close to those cacos, so I wasn't in a real danger whacking them with that knife. And having level 4 before L3 was very helpful towards survival. Gift dropping on formers was the way to retain 100% kills up until I was able to attack from distance with enough chance to hit, and could finally rely on my gatling and tac shotty to land corpses right on doors, or into the acid/lava, then a set of cerberus boots were assembled to screw that lava, and BAM "There's something very valuable here" on level 34 yielded an Acid Spitter. Of course that level had no acid, but I went to keep the gun, and boy was it fun when I have finally started salivating all over the floor. BBVV? MMVV? RRVV? Hey have a SPLASH, good riddance! Of course it didn't last for real long, as BBs and nightmare everythings started appearing, yet while the majority of enemies were "normal", and actually while there was at least one happy former, I was still relying on ordinary weapons to do the job.
But Nightmare wouldn't be Nightmare without stair traps. Level 58 met me with two MMVV at sight distance and a happy revenant to blow a wall - KABLAM, you can run but you can't hide, that sort of things, in the end I had to abandon YAAM with this screen:

That envirosuit was used on the previous level prior to me exiting for rumored extra protection - quite possibly it saved my butt over there. Not for long though, level 61 had me up against a corner with BBVV and a ton of arachnotrons covering the perimeter. I tried to rocket jump away into what happened to be a literal swarm of hV. And just look at that grave... the right part of the level is completely empty.
PS: archvile complexes are a kind of relaxation from having to control N! rezzing - they never stand back up. And I've got three. The NM arach cave was under invulnerability, so no biggie, NM demons actually too. But zero BFGs really hurt.

Century Lounge / [0998b3][U|Ao100|98%|56|YASD] Windows' keyboard buffer is TOO BIG

After several attempts to start a technician in a clear Ao100 (I'm too biased towards scouts and MCe together with AoMC) that ended at lv16 tops, I went Fin-Jug-EE instead of my usual routes of SoG3 or Rel2, and survived on the skin of my teeth until level 22 when I was blessed with a Nano Pack. Ha ha, hello nano plasma rifle, and endless hail on EVERYTHING. I went pretty bold, not using medkits over last 10 or so levels, then on level 56 Hell just froze over. I defeated the immediate set of threats, camped in a corner and started zapping leftwards with plasma. But, I facilitated that by sitting on F button for several seconds... So the Doomguy was firing... and firing... AND FIRING...
AND STILL FIRING...
for good 30 seconds or more after I depressed F, it was enough for a stray nightmare demon to sniff me from half a level away, climb up and eat alive through my OP red armor without looking into the beam. Good night sweet doomguy.
PS: he did defeat some enemies with such a move. But boy that was hilarious.
Also there was a situation that's worthy of a bug report, if only the board state would be captured right prior to a bug occurring. Level 27 or so, I went up close to a hV pack with a napalm barrel, that had a shotgunner 1 up 3 right from barrel and about 2 up 5 right from me, with the rest of pack somewhere in between. There was lava at my sides so I went backward, the shotgunner shot, blowing self together with a few other formers up, and a LuaError "beings[soldier].onAttacked(object,object): access violation" popped up. The game continued, as the AV was likely caused by that shotgunner's death being processed before death of a former that caused the error, due to the way the game processes splash damage, making it being hit by an already destroyed character, anyway that former also died right away. Yet, I wish I'd be able to screen that bug-producing situation before it would cause the bug to manifest, to help with debugging.

Bug Reports / [0.9.9.8 BETA 3][Windows][console] Fast shooting causes silence

Situation: You corner-shoot with a shotgun, having target cross at a place with no enemies. You can do that repeatedly until harm sounds cease, both in here and in 0997. The shooting mechanics isn't affected, but the sounds are; if you slam F-F-R-F-F-R-... fast enough (2 shots/second or faster) the shot, harm and reload sounds go off at least for one shot. This makes me lose information as a competent corner shooter. Repeatable, but the effect is most pronounced and most detectable when there is someone who's got hurt by the shot.

Got another screw-up in real life to stop bothering about them for a while, and rummaged through my hard drive discovering an almost-forgotten install of DoomRL. After some easier wins (including HMP AoMr which I had to abandon YAAM when hitting an arach cave staring down 4 barrels of plasma, but with 2 steps to stairs) I have decided to tackle a Conqueror run, initially declaring it would be one should I manage to clear that Unholy Cathedral. I failed to escape the trap in the Anomaly, so had to blast off several cacos in the entry room, then determined to at least try doing damageless Hell's Armory (good thing it rolled instead of Deimos Lab), receiving a rare reward of N+O packs. The run ended up with a literal shower of stuff! Just look at this:

Nuke plasma was a very happy find in Armory, or just a tad onward (the run took a lot of interruptions, so my recallings are messy), plasma shotgun dropped right before the Mortuary so I went to take it with me to clear the floor, BFGs were pre-determined find, but also there was a phaseshift in Hell-2, a ballistic vest in Hell-4, an Acid Spitter in Vaults, and that stupid Lava Elemental in the Pits was a SERIOUS PITA, he left me with 18%HP and zero medpaks (IIRC I kept one on hand), and then a very funny blasting cave of mancubi followed suit, lowering me at one time to 2% (1 HP), but an extremely timely large medpack saved my sorry butt. So Spidey went BOOM, JC went up close and personal, for him I've just decided to equip melee and charge to the face. And that 1 missed kill was likely a forgotten lost soul in Hell-1, after I swayed a bit and didn't verify I've cleared the level... Pity.
Yep, I've got about 10 total A-mods, but no serious boots, so I had to made antigrav out of steel boots. What a disgrace.

Nightmare! / [N!|AoMC+AoMs|53%|4|YASD] At least I can PWN the Arena

It looks like N! AoMs is TOTALLY dependent on whether there are monsters in your close vicinity to pass through. My best distance so far was Hell Armory where I have "overslept" a rezzed revenant and it blasted me all my cover and almost into the lava. This time I was already shredded with an unloaded shotgun when I foolishly stepped out of my cover to lay a fire line - oh yeah, luckily I had an exit right beside, but the next level wasn't any better. Whoops. Actually I hate when the game can't let you aim with an empty weapon, I am too often hitting F then instead of aiming I had my face stuck out into the open - yes, with no ammo to fire, to add insult to injury. And AoMC doesn't tolerate such mistakes. But in this run I have earned my first Hell Arena Pwnage medal, so I decided to share it along with my thoughts. Probably I have reached my current ceiling in DoomRL, and UV starts looking like... hum, a sort of easy going, so I maybe stop playing for a while. However, these quarantine measures all over the world this while might not last too long so you people won't miss me XDDD

Post Mortem / [U|AoMC+AoI|96%|YAVP] Impatience is a sin

Actually this is my first finished AoI, most ended up with a wipe somewhere around Phobos lv6/7, but this is actually my first try on UV, the rest were on N!. Hah. AoMC really makes all shooting challenges easier, especially if you scrabble enough XP for Cateye. The primary problem with N! is if you don't clear up corpses, you eventually get screwed with constant respawn of enemies, making say Military Base either a real chore or a deathtrap, even with MCe. But the real best feature available in AoMC is - Rocket Jump! You jump, and everyone just flies outwards, thinning the crowd.
This run, however, was pretty remarkable with what I could find over the course of the game - a GCB, I even thought about taking levels in SoG specifically for that gun, a nano pack (BAD AoI, BAD BOY! Nightmare! / [N!|AoSh+AoOC|71%|YAVP] I also can fire a shotgun

Well, basically yet another "first angelic" post over there. Spent about 180 tries with about 70 ending with a mortem before finally getting some nice invulnerabilities chained long enough to last until Dis. Of course was stupid and impatient enough to spend a nuke before meeting Spidey, although I did not believe I'd get a white sphere at lv7 to try a full win. Also was impatient enough to not earn me her brain, that would be kinda worth it I believe - especially with a character that excels at cornershooting. But, one mistap of F and I was pummeled almost to death, thankfully I had my red armor on to not get killed. And, BOY how I like when I get tossed around while invulnerable and just LAUGH at mancubi, viles, trons and former commandoes as they get OBLITERATED by friendly fire. Ha, ha, ha.

Post Mortem / [U|AoPc+AoOC|7%|YAVP] Probably the fastest game I've ever played

Not being the brightest mind over there, I tried to perform an UV AoPc run for several hours, the best attempt ending at Anomaly with BBs getting me rekt with ease. Maybe I can't just pass them properly, and should use another tactics, but I then decided to go for luck-based approach with AoOC. This game ended up being very lucky with level 7 stairs being close enough after having to use a homie (yay! A homie in reach in AoPc!) on level 6 vs a ton of arachnotrons. Then of course it went BAM. I wonder if someone can actually to a full win with AoPc? Also having no benefit with UV over HNTR for AoPc is kinda strange. Also got a gold badge outta this run - nice.

Post Mortem / [U|AoMr|YAAM] I'd better find my combat pistol myself

Got some free time while being on a sick leave, coupled with all-over closing of stuffs, uncovered DoomrL after another hiatus - found out my hands and brain still have wires optimised for this! Checked my badges, found that I'm missing a Marksman Platinum - but I'm very fond of pistols in 0997, thus went for it. After about twenty tries of fruitless Sereging that badge, with best try ending at Hell lv5 with three packs around the start, and the only phase device to drop me right between them... I went with normal way, spent another twenty tries bootstrapping to either Int-Int or SoG3, failed all of them and cried myself to sleep. Next morning things turned to my favor, and I've got me a combat pistol at Deimos5, and a real ton of 10mm chains to supply my 2d4 "B" pistol with power needed to faceroll barons and pain elementals. Got two caves of spiders back to back, but with a P-red they were somewhat easy, although it took a full chain to wreck em all. Had no nukes, but a homie and an invulnerability on Hell7 - this could as well be a full win should the RNG give me one. Hum. Anyway I'm happy.

Nightmare! / [N!|AoMC|92%|YAVP] How come I didn't PWN?

Well, N! is frikking stressful. Not just you're unable to save, but monsters replenish their ranks with tremendous speed. And, is it just me, or N! respawn speed increases over time? The run was never decided won, once I managed to survive with 1HP left (2%) vs a mancubus, wiped him for good then ate a medkit and went onward. But, I was granted a single piece of equipment that pretty much carried me through Hell (albeit as a support device) - the ever-desired Plasma Shotgun. Dam, it was a lifesaver in the Mortuary, which I cleared well and tidy as a result, while not having access to that nuclear BFG. For some reason a homing phase device decided to land me on top left set of stairs instead of top right where BFG rests, so I had to wade through a lot and a real lot of enemies. I managed to stockpile a really big set of weapons and ammo off them formers, but an ever-increasing stream of mancubi, revenants and viles cut me out of that pile of phat lewt so I eventually ran out of every kind of ammo - except rockets, as I had a revenant in my rear periodically reviving and supplying me with rockets. I managed to cut me out of an avalance of barons and hell knights with about 20 rockets, and ran out of them as well - but a former sergeant was kind enough to not get plasmated, so I grabbed all the shells he donated and played wall of force. Sadly, with a tac and no Rel the force wasn't enough to cover all sides, so while I was fighting the upper left, a former managed to sneak up on me from below, dropping me to 38% and damaging me my red armor. I blasted him with whatever that remained in my ever-unloaded tac shotty, looted his plasmagun and FINALLY managed to touch the ammo - yaaaay, back to full power! BLAST'EM! Then it was rather simple, with AoMC up MY sleeve and about 1000 power cells from all sources, I was wrecking any single monster with a volley of plasma bolts then a cleanup with shotty - rest in pieces, har har. That battle lasted me a good deal of 40 minutes of careful evaluation of what can shoot me and what can't, and one mistake could easily be the end.

Overall, the run was pretty fruitless - a SINGLE A-pack, three P-packs (first on lv17 went into a tac shotty, two more on BFG and plasma shotty, just in case), 4 or so bulk and a slew of tech packs, one vest, a plasma shotgun, and that's ALL. Dam, Hell, maybe you should be a lil more generous next time? And this with all levels walked through - I didn't bother with YAAMing, after all it's Nightmare! and my first relatively successful run (there was another but I went to Halls of Carnage and N! halls have nightmare cacos that fried my doomguy, so this time I skipped it), just finishing is already good enough.
And... how come I didn't get Hell Arena Pwnage badge? What hit me when I wasn't looking? I thought I did get it this time.

Post Mortem / [U|AoSh|92%|YAVP] Gatekeeper Diamond and out of ammo

First, I wished this to be a YAAM, but had to flee a caco cave at lv19, thankfully started a few steps away from the stairs. Skipping a few, no need to wipe everything, so I went to Mortuary - hum, no, too hot, I tapped a homie and ended up in a mob, but jumping down the stairs saved my ass from being ripped apart. Then I've got two pain elem caves in a row at 22 and 23, with measly two packs of shells total. But I managed to keep one box intact for Spidey.
Otherwise, the game was smooth at first, to my amusement I have found that Shottyman and Double Shotty allows me to tackle them nightmare demons in Phobos Lab without too much hassle, even if they don't get full blast in their face. I tried the same in Hell's Armory, but had to chew medpacks like candies while that brute decided to constantly fire at me at wrong moments. It also shone in Abyssal Planes, even if that agony elemental had a ton of HP and some armor, everything else got wiped out, the best property of shotguns :P I wish I'd build me an elephant gun, but sort of fumbled early, then wanted to wait for WK2, then was in a distress and made a FDS/P instead, however that puppy was a lifesaver at the very next level, with as few as 4x15 walkable squares and two BV packs right off the bat.
The funniest thing was Hell lv1 (also lv17) with "You need to run", and 0.33s walking speed with phaseshift/A and tac boots with HR2. I was able to sprint, wipe everyone then get almost to the start of the level to collect ammo. The hardest encounter was Spider's Lair, they triple-teleported me when I was finally at a cornershooting position, and that Medical Powerarmor which I managed to strip off a former commando at 8% was the ultimate heal that allowed me to survive (I had 4HP left when hunting for the last arachnotron), then a reward supercharge allowed me to continue. Sadly, missed Mastermind Brain by a single move in the middle of a fight, show have covered self. Well, maybe next time.
And finally, the GK Diamond was a result of a very lucky phase into the middle of the level and spamfiring from a tac shotty first into that door on the left, then into bruisers on the right. The Cyberdemon is all about timing, but firing a double from 2 squares away right after he throws a rocket is easy with huge runspeed.

Boy how does AoMC make everything easier! First I ran a HNTR run with these settings, even managed a YAFW by nuking JC, but it seems my Doomguy is kinda bloothirsty, so I went onward to UV. Lost once in CC due to two barons coming at me at once, and me failing to grab a zerk to get protection (it doesn't heal you but it still makes you resistant), then rolled an amazingly good set of enemies on lv2, and overall a HUGE amount of rare stuff helpful everywhere, Literally made me sort of cakewalk the entire game, once I landed the MCe. Sadly, no phases in Phobos so I had to tackle Anomaly with a rocketjump - this time forward, anyway those medkits and globes are of zero help on AoMs, landed just outside the wall, so was safe from direct shooting, and picked all of stuff then both bruisers from pretty much afar. Either Hell's Armory or a vault in Phobos provided me wih a duelist armor, which got modded into APT eventually and kept until the end, Armory dropped me a plasma schematic (OW, should have tried better to assemble it earlier!) and a nano pack (really a gift from God! This spells "HELL, NOW YOU WILL GET LOOSE!" harder than any BFG!), which, with a single level of Whizkid I managed to scrounge back then (I still wanted HR/HR/DM before Cybie) rested on a plasma rifle with two bulk packs. The Hell went quite smoothly. With gained WK2 I've built me a tac/A boots, a duelist armor with A and with two levels of Hellrunner I was moving at incredible 0.33s/step, I even had to hold my steps for UC to let CHARGING LOST SOULS catch up to me to whack them one at a time! Let alone them demons. I have decided to prepare a B-modded knife just for the whacks in UC, that thing really helped in making bigger holes in Angel of Death, I didn't even break sweat throwing those knives. One nice thing, AoD dies before your missile lands to the floor, so if you use a modded knife to finish him, you'll retain it. So I kept the Scythe, just in case - don't recall swinging it tho. The Vaults awarded me with Enviroboots - YAAAAY, no need to use envirosuits and sweating in Lava Pits that you might miss that carriable invulnerability! The Mortuary - I went in with a P-modded BFG, a B2N1 plasmagun and a ton of cells from previous arachnotron cave, and went left as there were visible viles. Cleared there, blasting several hundred power cells down the drain, then cautiously proceeded right, picking out any stragglers with plasma gun and whacking them en masse with BFG. Ran out of cells there, but not before picking a nuke-BFG AND wrecking all viles, so went with plasma, also picking last B-pack to make a nanomanufacture plasmagun. Hell level 7 had a Baron don a Medical Powerarmor, nearly bashed it into pieces before that brute went down, and Deimos level 7 had me a GCB - a ridiculous AoMC whacking gun, esp if you'd decide to invest in SoG. So I've tried to get Grammaton Cleric Cross, and succeed in a very weird manner - GCB was in my offhand, still I've got it awarded.
I wonder tho, should I have tried nuking the Mastermind with GCB in hand to get that cross, then whack JC (I believe I'd easily put him out of misery, esp with Azrael's in hand and Angelic on top - 4 hits and he'd be history) to have a full win, or would it not grant me that medal?
And finally, got Conqueror despite not getting that backpack, but really killing everything else on the level. You can see it spells in mortem "he fled Containment Area". I really don't like the trap in there, on UV it has about 8 barons and an archvile, and without a phase or another means of getting away (I dropped the combat translocator in favor for more ammo for chaingun, and didn't get phases until next level) I would likely get toasted. But the game said I completed it, and awarded me a conqueror badge. :D

After a successful Ao100 run with pistols I have decided to start tackling weapon challenges. Of course, started with AoMr, as I've got quite some experience with them pistols. First run went decent up to somewhere like lv14, with a P-modded combat pistol, and then all of a sudden I've got killed, cornered or something. That hurt! Several more tries, and I have done it with a blaze.
I wonder if I should have used Fin-Fin-WK instead of both spending levels to Int-Int and SoB-SoB. But as I have managed to find in Ao100, knockback rules, but you need to hit stuff to protect yourself with knockback. So I ended up with a starting P-modded pistol (with a backup of B-modded "really starting" pistol hanging in there in case this one would overheat or something), an ammo chain, and a powered red armor fresh from Hell's Armory. Lucky find I say, beats combat pistol in usefulness. You WILL get hit in Hell, regardless of what you do, except for maybe 2Dev or who won N! damageless. And there, weapons matter little, armor matters a lot.
One good thing I had is jump at Mortuary with a homie and about 20 turns of invulnerability, that was even enough to wreck a couple of viles that went right after me - two or three, still once anything fatter started appearing, I went outside. That device allowed me to tackle JC - and with an ordinary pistol, and without sufficient back-up, this was quite an ordeal. Good thing that if you shoot at 0.2s, the armor starts to repair itself before you get hit again, so it lasted me the whole battle. Also a nice thing that I've stumbled on a very lucky ammo chain in Hell lv7, where I first decided to bail out due to lack of ammo, but then seeing a chaingunner (YAY!) revived my hopes to clear the level - still something hid out of my sight. Oh well.
Oh yep, I've got Arena Gold with this run - me VERY happy. Really, people, how to fight on the Arena damageless at all? I only managed this feat once, and with a combat shotgun from a lucky lv2 vault.
And finally. At this particular moment in time, I don't believe I have a healthier or more deeply-felt respect for any object in the universe than this here pistol. Not even to a nuke-BFG.
