My first AoB try at 0.9.9.6, somehow I have managed to reach the Arena with bot large medpacks intact and the majority of my armor, and clear the Arena without dying. Maybe I've got lucky with knife throws, somehow I feel that I miss too much with Brute 2 and knife throws - maybe throwing, while taking melee toDam bonuses, still uses range accuracy PLUS decrease, so the base chance of me hitting something with a knife is 50%-dodge? Still, with Arena defeated, I've got to Chained Court with open mods, the Arena Master welcomed me by approaching - well, a chainsaw is there exactly for him! :P Large health globes now give berserk on AoB in 0.9.9.6, so whacking at the ambush in Anomaly went like that, I ate a globe, exited toeards upper wall, met them souls and cacodemons, started hitting and recharged my berserk... whew. The Bruiser Brothers were less peaceful as I've been expecting, because when I have met them at the corner of the exploded wall, the other Brother went out of his brother's back and fired at me - ugh, knocked back me and him, letting them to take free shots. Grrr. Still, they went down.

Hell's Armory gave me just the Acid Spitter and a bunch of blue armor to replace my crumbling supplies, while I had an envirosuit to grab the supercharge. I was later attempting to employ Acid Spitter as a means to cross a river of acid - but the damn thing did not want to recharge!!! Next level gave me the Trigun - yeahhh, if only I'll get me some invulnerabilities to boot. So far I was killing anything and everything with relative ease, although some circling around the pillars and walls was required. I have mistaken the passage to City of Skulls with Spider Lair and went in - yep, immediate phasing outta lever is the key to survive. One blue armor was completely eaten, but the skulls were wiped out. A BFG? What for? :) With the Trigun handy, I had no need walking into spider's lair. At Deimos level 7 I had attempted to employ berserk from large globe to somewhat safely face the Cyberdemon, and used a homing phase - no gain, still, hugging a pillar helped a lot, managed to catch sight of the bada$$ and sneak to him without being knocked back too much. Boom, dead cyberdemon.

The first level of Hell was an arachnotron cave - but I popped close to two out of 3 (?) spiders who had no chance to act prior to me... BZZZZT! Got me a double chainsaw just before fighting the Cathedral - probably was an overkill, but since there was no nano/onyx packs, that was a way to employ power packs into something useful. The next level popped me into a rivered arachnotron cave with one at my side, a great open area and three to four sniping me from the other side. The things got hairy, I have decided to phase to their side - no way, I have decided to pass through the river with Acid Spitter in hands - no way, not only that acid hurts, but it doesn't go away and the weapon doesn't protect at all. Painful I say. Had to retreat into the available stairs to Vaults and abandon the YAAM attitude. I was so disappointed at this that I completely forgot I have the Staff in my lap, so I left at once. The Hell level 5 gave me the shivers, 4 mancubi, 2 revenants, 2 archviles in a large empty room - it was a game of volleyball with me as the ball, but red/200% and berserk negated their damage to 1/shot, while the viles took full damage from mancubi rockets. The Invulnerability globe left at the far left of the map, close to stairs to Mortuary was a godsend I think, so I blew it up to smithereens. Next level gave me two globes and a nuke of a normal kind, I've blasted the Mastermind with it. I had to go to Lava Pits for that, with both globes it wasn't hard before I got me the Enviroboots and envirosuits for protection. Hell-7 was devoid of invulnerabilities and archviles - hello Mom, see that nuke? And look, I have a lava element! Unfortunately it didn't last to the stairs to JC, or I'd have nuked him too, still he went down to Longinus+Angelic with ease.

yesterday won an AoLT HNTR, yes berserk and maybe some armor assembly is the way to go - the hardest part will be trigger the berserk. I was lucky with an invulnerability tho :D

BTW, what type of damage does Mastermind now have in melee? I expect its melee weapon is no longer "fists" of whatever kind, but plasma/acid instead.

Vampyre+Cleaver = two master traits, note that with new pathfinding AI you will be able to only kill a single soul (even berserked) before all other souls around you would attack. With Cleaver, of course, you hit, one soul died - Next! 0 time wasted, no souls move or attack, so you can't get overwhelmed. The only expendable resource will be armor.

it can be a shrapnel damage nerf. DOOMRL wiki states that each damage type has its own value of knockback, with plasma and bullet be 1 tile per 12 damage and shrapnel and rocket explosion stated as one tile per 7 damage. Maybe the shrapnel (or shotgun) constant was changed in 0.9.9.6, while it's very hard to determine the actual value from the gameplay, my estimate is 10, as elephant gun seemed to knockback about the same distance as shotgun used to. Of course knockback can be linked not to damage type but to weapon type, which will mean shotgun nerf. Someone please test plasma shotgun behavior with knockback.

the pathfinding has been really improved, previously I had a very easy time in City of Skulls with a Vampyre, because souls lined up in a queue in an attempt to attack me from diagonals, now they don't stack like this but instead get around corners and monsters and can surround you in no time. For this reason I start having major trouble in Anomaly, I even expect that souls have got a speed/walkspeed boost in the line of 0.3s/tile, I was able to outrun them previously, but now I can't.

after playing a little more I think knockback really gets nerfed, in 0.9.9.5 it was 7 damage/tile, I guess it's now in the line of 10 damage/tile instead, you need two tiles knockback in order to cornershoot a cacodemon/HK/HB safely, now you get only one at point blank.

I have so far played one game of 0.9.9.6 HNTR, got my usual two BFG9Ks, and for some reason got TWO nano packs (thanks for the second one RNG, as I was stupid to splat my power armor in the Mortuary), but the statistics screen shows me finding 1 BFG9K and 1 nano pack. The same for power armor combined statistics, I did two of them while only one gets added. I have a mortem that states me assembling two of the power armor.

just won an HNTR with a shottybuild, built me an elephant gun midway, and was happily knockbacking arachnotrons sometimes even two squares away. Corner shooting still works pretty nicely. Maybe you were using combat shotgun, it has inherently lower damage, or a monster had some armor?
