Title: DoomRL Windows installer
Post by: Baphomet on March 23, 2008, 03:26
My offer for the DoomRL world, a Windows installer

additional features:
 - backup of *.ini, *.bat, player.dat and score.dat during update
 - download and install additional DoomRL files
 - optional deletion of doom.prc, player.dat and score.dat before updating
 - configuration section in the Windows start menu for game settings, music and sound
 - detection if the game is running
 - Vista SP1 ready

Visit the installer page (http://doomrl.bfgware.de/) for download and screenshots

How about making sources freely available?

Moved the project to a new domain, the setup source is available now too.

DoomRL would definitively benefit from an installer. However, it is also true that DoomRL still doesn't behave well as a mullti-user app. I still need to fix those things before I will ship the installer :/

Hi Kornel,

I'm not sure, do you have an own installer that you will release as the official one some day?

I wanted to do one using NSIS, but I never came to that point because of the lack of multi-user capabilities in DoomRL. However and installer will be strongly needed once we reach the modding stage (and a content downloader would be awsome too then...)

Until you plan to release your own setup I will maintain the Inno installer - just for fun.

My next idea is to download the mp3 files during installation, as optional task.

After asking Paul to include or use his (http://www.sirgalahad.org/paul/doom/) needed MP3 files, the installer now is able to download and extract (~45MByte WinRAR sfx) them silent in the mp3 folder.

The only problem I have at the moment, how to comment/uncomment the a bit strange looking entries in the doomrl.ini ;-)
Edit: Found a quick&dirty solution.

Update:

 - download and install additional DoomRL files

New installer and updated screenshots on http://doomrl.bfgware.de/

Anyone here who can offer a mirror for the 44MB MP3 music file?

http://dharkness.info - my own free hosting server ;-) (10 GB transfer per month per account)

only one issue - max 4MB files, so you would have to split the archive (I can't change this cause it's a reseller service)

I can host it on chaosforge.org itself, at least until it becomes a nuisance... Do you have permission from Paul to rehost it?

P.S. Would it be possible to choose a MP3 set in the installer if I'd get permission from another remix author?

Some minutes ago, his short answer to this question: "Sure".

Thanks a lot! But, I prefer to keep it as a single file.

Kornel is hosting the file as a mirror now. The next installer release will choose the available mirrors randomly.
