Title: A few newb questions
Post by: Ruldra on January 18, 2009, 20:35
Hi there, first post here. First of all, I wanted to give a big thanks to Kornel for making this awesome game, it's really addicting. I've been playing it non-stop for a few days now.

I do have a few questions about the game, though. I lurked for a bit but didn't find answers, so I'll try to sum up everything in this thread:

--

1) If I take 3 levels of SoaG and 3 levels of SoaB, my ToDmg Ranged shows only +3, when it was supposed to be +6. The wiki says they stack with each other, but apparently they don't?

2) If I take 3 levels of Brute, my ToDmg Melee shows +9, it should be at +12. Is that a bug?

3) The Longinus Spear gives you an armor bonus (6 armor IIRC). Does that stack with other armors?

4) My game crashes every once in a while; the window just closes all of a sudden and I lose my savegame. Looking around the bug report section, someone mentions it's related to the music (when it tries to loop, some error occurs and it crashes), and I did notice that it crashes exactly when the music ends. I think Kornel already knows about this, but will it be fixed in the next version?

Thanks in advance.

1) It does stack, but SoG only applies to pistols, so I suppose that's why it doesn't show.

2) Yeah, that's been resolved. I forget which way it was resolved, as I don't like AoB much.

3) Yeah.

4) It's going to try to be. It's sorta beyond Kornel's control, as he didn't write the music playing code, just used an open source way to do so.

Thanks for the compliment!

AD 4) If I'd have time I'd make it possible to choose between FMOD, OpenAL and SDL Mixer - that'd require some refactoring thou -_-

A few more completely noob questions:

1) How do you load a game? I can save at the stairs but if I die or exit I can only start a new game.

2) Is there a way to unselect fire without actually firing a weapon?

3) Are some weapons supposed to have automatic reload when they run dry?

Thanks guys, having a blast with the game!

1) How do you load a game? I can save at the stairs but if I die or exit I can only start a new game.
DoomRL has, like many roguelikes, a so called "Perma save" system. That means that saving is ONLY intended if you gotta stop somewhere and wanna continue your game another time. If you DIE, your savegame is erased. People who copy their savegame to prevent it from being erased are Savescummers.

3) Are some weapons supposed to have automatic reload when they run dry?
No, except from the combat shotgun "pumping shells into chamber" (Which is not really reloading anyway) reloading always happens manually, so pay attention to that.
EDIT: There IS an exception though on second thought. If you choose the trait "Shottyman", your shotguns will be reloaded automatically after each move.

Right but how do I close the window and then continue my game where I left off. Whenever I close it and open it again I'm only given the option to start a new game.

Does that atake up an extra turn? Also, my combat shotgun doesnt pump automatically.

1) If you start the game, it's practically already ereased; If you want to load your game, make it so that you save the game on a stairs, then you go back to main menu. Then, press EXIT. Just closing the window by pressing the X is NOT good.

3) No, it does not take an extra move. Otherwise it would theoretically be a pretty useless trait =)

BTW: I don't get what you mean with question 2?

If you don't want to fire, hit esc to cancel it.

If you don't want to fire, hit esc to cancel it.

Or, if you're targeting yourself, you can just press 'f' one more time.

Thanks for the help guys!

Another question:

Whats with the reload times? Some say 1.2 seconds some 1.4 , you still need to take a whole turn to reload them so why does it matter?

The game is measured in smaller times than turns (Where a second is a turn). Some enemies go in less than a turn, you can act in less than a turn, your movement can be more than, etc.
It matters.

Another question: Does triggerhappy apply to the double-shotgun since according to the wiki it fires 3 shots?

Another question: Does triggerhappy apply to the double-shotgun since according to the wiki it fires 3 shots?

no because only stock 2 shotgun shells

And weapon magazine mode doesn't work on shotgun and double-barreled shotgun (but works on combat shotgun)

Alright, I've got one.

I just got my first "Killed by something unknown"... killed when a shotter shot a barrel. I was caught in the blast, too stupid to live anyway.

How do I duplicate the "Killed by something unknown"?

You could always take a lava/acid bath.
