I'm not sure what to think. I've been trying to find the special ending for a long time too, tried the nuking, tried lots more, but never found it. But then again it could be a random event after killing the cyberdemon, which he was lucky enough to get.
Now there are some inconsistencies in his post mortem, but that may have been due to the crash? Allthough the whole crash story makes me doubt this a bit more too.
Wingie never mentions any powerups on Phobos Arena, just an invincibility globe he found on the level before the Cyberdemon, which made him decide to use the nuke.
I fail to see why Kornel wouldn't use Carmack here instead of Romero (allthough i was hoping it would be Kornel himself :D) so this part is still credible for me.
But what i miss are screenshots! Give me some screenshots and you'll convince me (if they are not fakes offcourse).
Anyway, welcome to the forum wingie! I'm gonna give you the benefit of the doubt here and congratulate you on at least discovering the special ending!
EDIT:

So I just nuked the crap out of him. Is this why I got the special message and level instead of the ending the Wiki mentioned?
I don't think so. Lots of people tried this and got the normal ending.
Quoting: wingie
Has anyone else ever gotten this? Was the crash the result of me beating Carmack? Because, seriously, nothing should survive 8 BFG shots. =)
As far as i know you are the first one to report this ending here. Wether nobody ever got it before i cannot say, but it is a very rare event (I've killed the Cyberdemon about a dozen times now, never got what you got).

Thank you! I hope somebody can either duplicate the findings, or, say, Kornel himself would appear and settle this once and for all. =) You were right in that I never mentioned any powerups in the Phobos Arena---it was in the level right before it.
I think the monster inconsistencies may have resulted from the crash / monsters in the "secret level" that I BFGed. As to why it said "the first person to ever venture into hell", I downloaded it fresh for this computer---I've been playing for two weeks at another. Maybe that has something to do with it? That a "new" version got put up very recently?
Anyway, I do not expect you to believe me, especially when I don't have some very easily-shopped ACSii screenshots to accompany my post. I do expect you, however, to try to find the "special ending" on your own---I'm pretty sure the trigger is nuking the Cyberdemon while you're invincible.

One can duplicate that effect by deleting all files but the .exe itself.
I'd also like to say that if your mortem.txt is correct, You could have used a large health pack, Unpacked the other BFG and then have two more shots at the head on a stick.
Lets for a moment assume that dump is 100% authentic.
Wingie said that he died and got that dump, So glitch crashes are out of the question, According to what he says it is a bona-fide dump.
I'm sorry, I would like to believe you but I have spent half my life cutting through bullshite and I feel jaded towards anything that is way "out there".
Its classic "I'll believe it when I see it" syndrome.
So for that matter I would like to suggest a new feature to DoomRL - That the game uploads mortem files by itself. Or if you dont have internet access at the time, Perhaps having an encoded file (and a plain .txt file) that you can upload by hand.
Perhaps it is a bit tough, But it ensures authenticity.
But hey, Well done. If it isint true, At least you have started up a powerful rumor :-)

Good idea, would be worth it imo.
I realy want Kornel's comment here, only he can verify the authenticity of his story for now.

Sorry, I don't want to do that :-).
All I can say for now, that the current version has a overspawn bug, that crashes the game when too many monsters appear. It's my fault, and I'm terribly sorry for that.

Well, the "secret boss" does spawn lots of Barons of Hell, so that may explain it.
I think it may be my fault for not killing them fast enough though. =)
As for the where I got the BFGs question: I got 2 of them in the City of Skulls.
Anyway, I just finished another game. This time, I killed the Cyberdemon (rather easily, since I had an overcharged plasma rifle and 3 loaded BFGs---1 from Halls of Carnage and 2 from City of Skulls). I got the normal ending. This is the post-mortem I got. The last line is the most interesting.

Anyway, if you don't believe me, here's a screenshot:

(Before anyone says "OMG IT IS NOT EVEN WINDOZ", I use bbLean and ObjectDock as my shell replacement, so it looks like a better OS. =) And it's not Photoshopped, because I do not have Photoshop. It may be Painted, actually I did paste the screenshot into Paint to save it, which explains the color loss, because Paint sucks in its PNG export.)
There was one of 'em invincibility orbs a few feet away from the stairs down to the Arena this time, again. I couldn't pick it up, though, because a Baron of Hell blasted me when I was next to it and took it out.

I hate you :P
You want that! You want everyone to look and waste hard earned time on your game to find and understand the secrets themselves! You want it! :P
Anyway I would at least like to know if there is any logical conclusion to this, or is pure randomness the reason of this event. I mean it, I never ever killed that cyberdemon, never even went farther than level 15 (or something around there). It'll be long before I figure all that out by myself.
TO WINGIE
Now im going to talk to you! And you alone. I trust you, relatively. You proved there is an additional line of text, which should be available on every other post mortem you will do. Now now, if you would be so gentle, you would send me the "score.dat" folder to :
bozo2011@hotmail.com (please, forget the stupid email name, I created it when I was like 7 years old and I can't create another one :P)
You understand, it is damn easy to edit a picture. Any one with 5 minutes of free time can work it out. I doubt you can edit score.dat, so it would completely prove your authenticity. Please, I would really like you to send it to me, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks :)
ANOTHER THING CONCERNING THE NAME OF THE BOSS : John Carmack. Ok, a small theory. If you give yourself no name, the game gives you one from a list. In this list you can find John Romero, and even Adrian Carmack. But here you got John Carmack. It would be stupid to call the boss John Romero and end up in a John Romero VS John Romero fight...
Well, all this is my opinion, and I wish luck to everyone in finding everything about this mystery.
Oh and sorry for the long post!
Thanks a lot! I see now Kornel love to hide stuff like that and I do understand, after all I make game too (but nowhere are they spectacular).
Anyway, this made me want to play the game again :P I want to solve the mystery!..
