Title: Green? GREEN?!
Post by: Potman on March 30, 2009, 14:51
The standard color for uniques, that is. It's more or less the worst color possible. I'm pretty sure Jackal isn't green.

Some variety would be awesome.

It is, however, a not widely used color, and they should all be the same color to stand out, IMO.
So... Any alternate color suggestions?

Pink.

.ini-definable is always my ideal answer in these cases (that is, where art and practicality clash), but realistically the current setup is best, because it's simple and effective, which is fitting for a very tactical game.
Patience, Kornel said the source'll eventually be revealed, right? After that, .ini-definable it should become, IMHO :)

Black. Hehe... =P

Either black or gold would get my vote, if we really have to settle for just one color.

Heh black was actually meant ironically... I mean who would ever be able to SEE them on a black background without precisely scanning the whole area? :P
By the way, let's not take a greyscale anyway... If you play on Vista then you can't go fullscreen and when you play windowed it's a *pain* to see the difference between Pistol and Double shotty, and Pistol and Shotgun. That should change actually.

Anyway, gold sounds good for me too, except that they can be confused with pre-modded weapons and artifact. So I'd say dark gold?

Offtopic: by the way: is there are ANY way to emulate fullscreen console under Vista? Or at least console with so large fonts that it will take almost the whole screen?

I think the current color is okay because it stands out, and the other colors the remaining colors that aren't already used for some kind of weapon or armor or still pretty wacky.

If it had to change, I would vote for yellow.  Yellow is kinda overloaded as it stands, but that also means it immediately jumps out at me when I'm playing... yellow things are all really good, and I'm going to look at all of them anyway.

To facilitate further discussion, here are the only colors used in DoomRL currently.
I'm not sure if there are any more that could be added.

Colors that are already used for armor/boots/weapons:
light gray (silver) used for pistol, steel boots
gray (dark gray) used for shotgun
blue (light blue) used for combat shotgun
white used for double shotgun
red (dark red, maroon) used for chaingun, red armor
brown (olive) used for rocket launcher
teal used for plasma rifle
purple used for bfg
yellow used for advanced weapons, upgraded weapons, "artifacts"
green (dark green) used for green armor, protective boots
navy (dark blue) used for blue armor, plasteel boots
light green (lime) currently used for unique stuff

Unused colors:
cyan (aqua) (same color as magazine mod)
magenta (fuchsia) (same color as accuracy mod)
light red (same color as small med-pack)
black (used for...background)

The colors appear a little different on the board than in game, so I included other items of the same color so you know what the color looks like in game.

That makes me think, that mods shouldn't have different colors per mod, but per type ( armor, boots, weapon ).

Sure you can make the fonts bigger when you right click your console app in the taskbar and than Properties (Tho that won't solve the color problem), but you want it entirely fullscreen then I'd use Dosbox or Virtualbox (For DoomRL, I suggest Virtualbox as it's actually a modern game; Tho if you want to use virtualbox you do need an XP installation CD or ISO)

Nahh... I'm used to the mod colors now, personally I don't think that should be changed. Of course with my Vista it is hardder to see whether it's light or dark (so weapon mod or armor/boots mod) but that is not really a problem... I'm used to the shotgun problem anyway and I got the reflex to always use the look command when I don't see whether it's one thing or another.

Yeah, i did that. But there are only 3 options for fonts there: Consolas (which is pretty ugly and does not have some symbols, like red dot that it shown as undefined symbol), Lucida Console (same thing), and default Raster Fonts (Terminal), which size is limited to 10x18, and which correctly shows characters only on 8x12 (default console window size).

Virtualbox is a nice suggestion, thank you. I'll try it.

By the way, it's possible to change colour preferences for each colour in the "Colors" tab. Mostly only dark-grey is required to be made darker (to something like 96,96,96 RGB).

There's a no-effort possibility for a SDL-based console release with fullscreen support if anyone would like that.

Me too would be happy! And it would be useful to you too when you will migrate to Win 7.)

Blade, I'm waiting for that Win 7 stable version actually. I want to completely be oblivious in my lifetime of the existance of Vista xP

It's promised to be released in August, so not much time to wait left...

Also, for me it would be nice to have full-screen Beta version... And with fixed phase devices bug...)

Let's do this in dungeon siege style! Uniques in purple!

Green IS used for uniques in a buncha MMOs, but that's not a reason to keep doing it of itself ;).

Anyway, whenver I play a game like this I end up saving a console config where all my dark colors are bright colors and my bright colors are pastels; e.g. dark red is 255,0,0, and bright red is 255,128,128. It's annoying to set up (in winxp) but at least you can make it save it :).

In GNOME's terminal, color modification is as easy as hitting the BFG9000 button, then the fire button, and watching everything die. Haha! :D :P
