Title: Dark Heresy, eh?
Post by: Malek Deneith on August 24, 2009, 16:22
+++ Thought of the day: Through the destruction of our enemies do we gain our salvation +++

As those that paid attention, might have noted reading yesterdays chat log Generic has kindly posted, Gargulec had been inspired by the Emperor to mention Dark Heresy PBF, which led into him being goaded into DMing one. And since he asked me to post a relevant topic for him, even though I do not understand why didn't he do so himself, in my unending kindness I posted one (yes, the very one you are reading) in attempt to get more meat for the grinder, or as some call it - players.

For those of you maggots that don't know: Dark Heresy is a RPG... no, not that kind of RPG, put those Baldur's Gate discs down, we're talking real RPGs... that has been sanctioned to be used for representation of Warhammer 40.000 world (those that don't know what WH 40k is shall report to nearest Ecclesiarchy station for purification... with promethium), and PBF means Play-By-Forum, or a game in which players write posts describing their actions, while DM post's the results. It's really almost like normal RPG session, only doesn't require to all participants to be in same place in same time, but is slower in exchange.

Either way, our would-be DM has stated that he will be allowing material from core rulebook, and Inquisitor's Handbook, as well from things he called "Astrates supplement" and "Sisters of silence supplement". Since he made me post this topic, I'll take the liberty of stating my opinion and saying that I would advise against those last two supplements: while playing Space Marines might seem fun, it also runs into hight risk of unbalancing the game - as does using other unsanctified third-party material. I know I won't be touching anything except core and inquisitor handbook. As for those, they are readily available at amazon and RPG related places... for those more desperate of you there are other ways, but I won't discuss such heretical methods here - just don't let me chatch you. Also there is a handy Errata (http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/ffg_content/dark-heresy/pdf/darkheresy-errata-v3.0.pdf) here, read it.

I leave the rest of the talking to our GM, and in the meantime...

/me pulls out a bolt pistol and grins sadisticly

...do I see volunteers?

+++ Addendum +++

Oh, I almost forgot - I highly reccomend Invisible Castle (http://invisiblecastle.com/) for die rolls.

So we're /not/ parodying Perry Bible Fellowship? D:
Oh well. I'm in, albeit in the most boring way possible :P

Quick non-climatic questions:
1) How much time do we need to participate in this PBF?
2) Is it something like, we log on at 20:00 CET and play or are we free to reply in 12-24 hours?
3) This errata is useful in anyway to new players?

EDIT: Almost forgot.

Since the whole idea behind using PBF is to allow playing of people who would have problems getting together to play via other means (like IRC for example) so there usually isn't a limit of how fast you need to post, though if you stop posting for a weak without proper notice or something like that don't be surprised if your character gets hit by a stray lightning bolt and DM introduces someone new into the party in your play :P

As for errata- yes, it is useful, vital I'd even say, especially if you got your hands on pre-fantasy flight games edition of Dark Heresy book, as there have been some changes to career paths (FFG version has two first releases of errata incorporated I think, but there still is more stuff that got fixed/changed)

Thanks Malak, for posting the topic.

First thing: Way I was forced into DMing reminds me how my group do that. I am deeply moved that heartless bastards are not limited to place of my habitation.

Second thing: My English, as you have probably noticed, is not perfect. Indeed, it is quite far from being perfect, so I feel obliged to warm you- I am not entirely sure how it will fare during play.

Third thing: I've never DMd PBFs before, but yet, I am very willing to try.

Fourth thing: Things I do allow. Please note, I do not want more than one marine and xeno per group. Anyway, those supplements are good read- discuss!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Fifth thing: Pretty minor- in normal DH, bolter weapons did not kick ass, and so plasma ones. So, in MY PBF, bolters are upped to do 2d10X DMG, and plasmas 3d10E

OKay. So Malak, Almighty Cornelius, Generic, Xandar, Passionaro.
(One a lone emo, five Inqusitor Retinue?)
M'kay, six seem as upper limit of what I can handle, so if anybody else want to participate, make it quick!

Right, I'll start making the character once I'm home from work - I think I'll go for cleric for lulz and assorted preachery, but I'll wait with final decision until I have time to roll stats and look through the careers a bit more.

So we have a magnificent six. Better than seven, IMHO. I'll make character creation topic.

/me gives away a sigh of resignation, then walks away swearing intensively in his blasphemous (yet melodic) language.
Too late, as always, dammit.
I hope there'll be an another occasion to participate. The sooner, the better.

Eldar? Always!
For wishing to be a foul xeno, you are granted a place among us. Not very good place, not a place that eldar would want, but still... <evil laughter>
Anyway, I am pretty sure that somebody from magnificent six won't participate, so feel free to post a character:P

Thank You Kind Sir ! :)
How much time do we have to prepare ourselves (character, its story, stuff...) ?

As long as you wish.
But my vileness will rise geometrically for every day above one week.

If this works out we'll make a separate board for PBFs. I'd like to see a Doom one next ;>

I've only played D&D and don't know much about WH40k to be honest. I glanced over the rulebook and if a spot opens up i might be interested in joining. I was thinking Scum or Arbitrator.

I was hoping for 4 players, got seven.

Sorry Dervis, bit too late:P

No problems, i think the rate of PBF play wouldn't go well with me. Any luck, have fun for everyone in the party.

Thank you. :)
Not sure if I'll survive long enough to call it "participating in a PBF", so if I'll die (or rather - WHEN I'll die), I permit you to take my place, if GM also permits it. :)

If this works out we'll make a separate board for PBFs. I'd like to see a Doom one next ;>

Huh, is there a DooM-based system other than "Semper Fidelis" or shall we make one ? :-O

I'll be going for cannon fod- err, Guardsman class myself.

The Emperor better protect, 'cause I'm going to need it...

From my experiences with PBF's it's not starting one that is the problem, it's keeping one alive ;)

Wise words of wisdom.
I hope it won't collapse as easily as the rest of PBFs I strived to live through.

I've got a character ready - can this sentence apply to me?

If not I'll wait for the next go.

Title: Re: Dark Heresy, eh?

That's fine.  I'm perfectly willing to wait if it leads to a better game overall.  A few questions though.

When you refer to the supplements, do you mean these two:
http://www.darkreign40k.com/downloads/career-paths/tyranus-conclave-adeptus-astartes/download-2.html
http://www.darkreign40k.com/downloads/career-paths/dark-reign-presents-sisters-of-silence-mkii/download.html
Rather than the ones you linked?
The Space Marines one you linked seemed rather unbalanced - the stats were so much better than other characters and such, and the one I refer to also calls itself 'astartes', but uses the same homeworld stats as other characters.  The Sisters on you linked to leads to a broken link eventually, as well.

I'd also like to clarify using psychic powers outside of battle.  Can I theoretically use invocation before every psychic power use?  It seems to have no downside, except the risk for negative phenomena.  Similarly, using the minor power knack before any test outside of battle?

You're right with links, sry for the mess.
Title: Re: Dark Heresy, eh?
Post by: Zi on August 26, 2009, 19:40
I want to be 100% sure that the one I linked to is the one you'll accept, since they describe vastly different possible builds.

The original one you linked to has super stats, but didn't allow for as much variety in builds.  The one I'm linking to now doesn't have inflated stats, but allows things like psyker Space Marines (Librarians and Grey Knights), although they're not as great at psychic powers as Imperial Psykers.

I ask this because I want to build a psychic power using character - I have a Imperial Psyker put together now that I'm rather enamoured with (and as it happens, is pretty different from Passionario's) but will put together a psyker Space Marine too in case it'll be a better fit with the party when my turn comes up.

The thing about Space Marines is... well, they ARE overpowered, in most, if not all the incarnations of the game. Humanity's Best, and all that...
