I just downloaded doomrl, and I played it a bit. Nice game, but floor tiles are a bit confusing: instead of having white dots on a black background (.), my floor tiles are a black question mark on a white background (?), making it hard to see and to play. Is this a bug, or just a problem of my pc? I run the game on Ubuntu 8.04.

(This post is made under the assumption that Ubuntu is some form of linux. I sincerely hope my nerd cred has not been ruined.)
You did get the linux version, right? The downloads page has two links.
Otherwise yeah, it's definately a bug. The linux version is "unstable", to quote the downloads page.

You might need to provide more details. For example, are you using xterm, or the gnome-terminal, or something else to display the game? Are you using the default doomrl.ini file that is provided?

Your terminal font doesn't support HIGH ASCII -- edit the doomrl.ini and set HIGHASCII to false.

Perfect, I just needed to modify doomrl.ini setting:
AllowHighAscii = FALSE;
Now it works! Thanks a lot!

I tried using both xterm and gnome-terminal, and the result was the same.

Curiously, what distribution are you using? I've tested it on Xubuntu using both xfce4-terminal and xterm and things were fine. Maybe you were missing some option to support UTF-8 or some other encoding for your console?
(I know that the issue has been resolved -- but I think it is more of a workaround than a complete solution.)
