I had been trying for this challenge (among others) for a few weeks now. I originally tried to do AoMC by going for Intuition 2, with the idea of killing the enemies before they ever see me. Ammo usage was a bit of an issue, and I decided to go with MAc as my priority this time. MAc does feel a bit like cheating, but I guess it's not too bad. I ended up facing probably 4 arachno caves (not including the Spider Lair), and lots of Arch Viles, but the game was not that difficult by the time that I got MAc (which was during the Wall, just about ran out of ammo then). The uniques were ok, my setup couldn't have been much better. An Advanced Plasma Rifle would've been nice.

I've found that the upper difficulties are not as hard as they would seem. The early stages are hardest, facing strong enemies and having weak equipment. I plan to repeat this setup on Nightmare, and get the Destroyer Diamond badge.

I did have a bit of trouble with the Vaults. I had saved up at least 5 phase devices, and 2 homing devices, but I was only able to get into the middle vault, so the left vault was untouched. It would've been nice to clear that one out, and get the badges for that. Do you have to just be lucky, or is there a way to get through the walls, or control where the phase devices lead to somewhat?

I used those same two Homing Phase Devices to try and get to the hidden stairs in the final level (which show up on the winning mortem), but they just teleported me to random spots. I did find the pillar to go in, but neither rockets nor the BFG took out the walls. I don't understand how to get in there! I had prepared the missile launcher and BFG for whatever I would have to fight down those stairs, but no luck. At least I learned some new things, and set my new highest score!

Post by: RogerN on January 23, 2010, 21:42: Congrats! I also just finished my 1st win on UV, which was AoMC using basically the same build. IMO, AoMC feels *easier* than a standard game on UV once you get MAc. There's just no substitute for being able to kill any enemy in one turn, with virtually zero chance of failure.

Post by: leonresevil2 on January 23, 2010, 21:54: Thanks! Agreed, it is easier for sure. Overall, a fast character will have a very easy time in AoMC, since accuracy and max damage are guaranteed. Basically, this build had 8 damage per shot plus 3 with SoB, 6 shots plus 2 with TH ... ... 11 x8 if I am not mistaken. Ellipses for emphasis (not because I am bad with math :]) since that is 88 damage per burst, higher than even the BFG9k! And just think, plasma rifles as recently as 0.9.8.10 used to fire 8 shots at least, and may have had 1d8 by default. The plasma rifle is definitely a powerful weapon, and I do think that it should have one less shot per burst, but be a point or two more accurate. That would make it reasonable, and closer to the design in the original Doom (as far as I can remember, the plasma rifle was more accurate than the chaingun.

An alternate Ammochain trait progression for AoMC is to pick up Triggerhappy (2) after SoB (2). This lets you one-volley Cacodemons with a vanilla Chaingun. In full chainfire, it'll also kill Hell Knights in a single 8-round burst. Then when you get a Plasma Rifle (sooner rather than later due to Former Commandos appearing early on UV or N!) you'll one-shot everything in sight besides Viles or Barons wearing blue+ armor.

BFG9000 still has a role if you need to kill several dozen monsters all at once, due to the explosions chaining off everything, but that's really only likely to come up in the Mortuary.

I'm still convinced the center Vault is also only filled with tears and lies, even after full clearing the level. Even if you're lucky enough to land in there, enemy splash damage is likely to destroy anything valuable and the teleporter home, too, possibly leaving you stranded inside.

Also re: knockback, if you do breach the 12-damage threshold, each shot in the volley that hits will do knockback, so if you're perfectly level with a Baron or something, you'll see the corpse slide back six or seven spaces and leave a huge blood trail. Humorous to see, but still something to avoid as a practical matter.
