Both this and my last decent start had trouble getting into a position to shoot the arch-viles in a V/M group. If I shoot a mancubus, I have to pause to reload and it gets raised. It might even get raised before I reload. This time I tried to move around the group hoping to keep it out of sight and look for the arch-vile on the other side, but I ended up seeing everything at once while near the south wall and that was not ideal. Any quick tips? still trying for 100% so I didn't want to flee.
my next guess is shooting at the group for a clip or two offscreen to injure one or two of them, reloading, and then approaching - hoping to thus kill a mancubus with enough bullets left over to get the V when I see it.
and finding 5 power mods before whizkid was pretty neat, if space-consuming :) (the 5th was on BP red armor)

Hmm. To say you're attempting a pistol-only YAAM on A100 is pretty ballsy. I can't give you any sure-fire advice for all Vile-Mancubi packs, but this is likely what I would have done in your situation:
- From the center of the map (which I imagine you were near before ending up in that awkward position), keep out of the Mancubi's range, slowly luring him away until reviving from the Vile doesn't occur.
- Then, row by row, I would shoot blindly some 10-12 shots and listen for Vile noises. After hearing the Vile, killing him off-screen shouldn't be too much trouble.
- At that point, finishing up the other Mancubi ain't too bad.
Since you're going pistol A100, I would highly recommend prioritizing SoB over Fin->WK. Don't expect to be as lucky with power mods, and you'll get your WKx2 eventually. If you think a unique pistol's gonna show up...well, that takes the fun out of pistol-only, doesn't it?
It is important to remember that revived monsters (either by N! respawn or Viles) have the same "frozen time" that affects them at the beginning of a floor. For Mancubi, it's a little longer than the typical monster, so I wouldn't worry too much about their revival for reasons other than ammo conservation. If anything, you could try to knock-back the guy into lava and hope he dies there.
Running gets the best use out of pistol-only by scouting out enemies. One possibility would have been to turn on your tactics, then make your way to the right via side-stepping to check out what you're up against.

thanks for the advice, looks like a lot of good stuff there! My current run has done a lot better, though blaster + trigun is surely helping as well :)
I haven't had that situation again to try luring one away from the pack, but taking advantage of the "freeze" after resurrection has helped against a lot of arch-vile packs. So has running-mode when I think or know a nasty group is nearby.
before your reply, I always got finesse quickly, and would choose whizkid whenever I got the mods, which was usually soon afterwards. Now I'm choosing SoB and have had a shortage of mods; with this one only now on floor 33 did I find my third P/T mod. I blame you for this shortage :)
oh, the pistol-only part of my run isn't a self-challenge per se, it just seemed to be a natural consequence of no ammochain. I used shotguns at the beginning and will certainly try out any weapons I haven't seen before - suspect I'd keep a missile launcher. Blaster is making me feel a little dirty though.
