Title: [U|AoMr|98%|14|YASD] Wait, what? I died?!?
Post by: Tormuse on February 20, 2011, 23:56
Damn it!  This one was going so well!  :(

I overcame Hell Arena and the Arena Master, encountered my first Shambler and discovered my first assembly and was dual-wielding two high-power pistols.  I was well on my way to getting a YAAM on Ultraviolence; I never expected to die here.  :(

The last thing I did was dual-reload my guns.  A risky move when there was a baron and two mancubi bearing down on me, but the baron was between me and them, so I figured he'd take the brunt of the mancubus rockets.  (Which he did, heheh)  :)  I had power modded red armour on at 100%, level 3 TaN, and nearly 100% health, not to mention reloader skill, so I was sure I'd survive it.  I don't know how they did so much damage in less than 2 seconds' game time.  :|

Losing because of a careless error is one thing, but I was so sure I was being careful here!  (At least I added a couple of badges, though)

I think high power weapons take a little longer to reload.

I think dualreload is the same speed as reloading one at a time, so the latter is usually a better option.  after the first reload, if you still want to load the other pistol, R will only load that one since your primary is full.

new version has brought out so many skillful players, it's indimidating :)

From your message log it looks like there was a barrel there somewhere, and one of the shots missed the Baron and hit you instead. Rough luck.

Almost a very nice run! ;)

I think high power weapons take a little longer to reload.

I checked.  It's the same amount of time.  They do carry fewer bullets, which means more frequent reloads, but the extra damage and especially the knock-back make up for that.  (keeping Barons and mancubi at arms' length is handy)

I think dualreload is the same speed as reloading one at a time, so the latter is usually a better option.  after the first reload, if you still want to load the other pistol, R will only load that one since your primary is full.

Hmm...  I didn't know dual-reload only loads one pistol when applicable.  I'll have to try that next marksman run.  Thanks!  :)

True...  I find it a bit daunting too, but I think it's best to avoid comparing yourself to other players.  Just think ahead to how satisfying it'll be when you post your platinum and/or diamond mortem and get all the praise you deserve.  :)

rchandra basically said it, but just to make it clear: if you want to reload both your pistols, the safest way to do so is "r" followed by "R". This will reload the first pistol, THEN the second pistol, and allow you to decide if you have time for the latter. Otherwise you're stuck with 2.4 uninterrupted seconds of getting the crap shot out of you.

Mancubi shots are quite variable in damage, and even nine DR isn't going to be enough if you're hit with a few at a time AND a barrel (which seriously hurt like Hell). Best to get ye away from barrels/walls in those situations (and maybe, if you're relying on high power pistols, to invest in Rel earlier). Hard to say from the screenshot, but I'm guessing when the Baron got hit in that position, you also took damage due to splash. It was a tough position in general: bad luck killed you this time.

IMHO the trade-off of more damage for a smaller clip just isn't worth it. But other than that, I've had this mancubus scenario happen to myself as well. The phase device in your backpack might have saved your life, RNG willing.

Hmm, I thing DG 2 should allow faster dual reload...

I think that was what I suggested over IRC.
