How about if we give some names to builds in the mortems? Essentially informational here in DoomRL 1 but probably a necessary development for DRL2. We can simply base it off of the master traits
Ammochain - Shocktrooper
Army of the Dead - Stormtrooper
Cateye - Force Recon
Vampyre/Blademaster - Master-at-Arms
Gun Kata - Commando
Fireangel - Artillery
No Master Trait - Grunt
Pretty simple and open to extention later on. Other possible words that could fit advanced traits would be: Scout, Sniper, Infiltrator, Brawler, Specialist.
It could look something like this:
-- Traits ----------------------------------------------------
Specialty: Shocktrooper
Ironman (Level 3)
Finesse (Level 2)
Hellrunner (Level 2)
Son of a bitch (Level 3)
Whizkid (Level 2)
Triggerhappy (Level 2)
Ammochain (Level 1)
Fin->Fin->SoB->SoB->TH->WK->MAc->Iro->WK->TH->SoB->Iro->Iro->HR->HR->
Just a rough idea at this point

And a good idea, too.
It's quicker to tell how the game was played, I guess.

"No master trait - Grunt"? That's hardly fair for the single pistollers out there who value high damage output at high speed over dancing among the bullets...

Yup, I chose an easy implementation. Trying to come up with a collectively exhaustive match between traits and names is...well...difficult
Taking it a step up would be to make Non-Master Traits scale to level rather than trait. So:
clevel < 6 = Grunt
clevel 6-10 = Marine
clevel 11-15...etc
Beyond that it gets too complicated...but if I were adventurous I would separate the traits in to buckets like Offense, Defense, Speed, Utility, and assign each a value based on the chosen traits and pick suitable names for a marine thats 6 offense, no defense, etc. But like I said - far too complicated for what it is...informational fun!

If the player doesn't have a master trait, probably the most accurate next step would be to name their build after the first advanced trait they picked. Dualgunner -> assume a pistol build. Berserker -> assume a melee build. Whizkid -> call them a Field Technician. And so on, leaving Grunt as a catchall if nothing else matched or they were still low level.
It could be a fun system, especially if you hid a few easter egg names for exact build orders.

And then that "Alucard" build would make no sense any more. =P
I was thinking, let's make this a community thing. Produce a list of possible builds, and then we scour the published mortems to source for some of the names that people have called their builds, and assign them as specially named builds.
As for the rest, we can do something like a spider chart of the bonuses, pick the top two biggest bonuses and assign a systematic name accordingly. That should cover the generic build name stuff. Heck, we can even make it a binomial name, with a "common name" (as provided in community) associated with it.
This obviously needs more refinement. =P
Oh, notice I said bonuses as opposed to Traits, since I believe that a build is more than merely traits (it can also include equipment as well). =)

You ass xD
At least it's not like my other pistol build I don't use that often, the "Deadman Special" (totally NOT based on Gungrave, hehehe...)
Leaving that aside, this is a nice idea to implement, but it requires lots of work and also must be considered the fact that not everybody has a name for their custom builds (It happens quite often), so it's more like "what would you name that build?" instead of just searching something that could or could not exist at all.

I like Nameless's approach from a few posts above. So here what I plan:
I'll create a new thread with the Master Trait classes at the top, then below I'll have Advanced trait class combos and I'll edit the post as people add ideas. For example Bad+TH = Duke Nukem! Ideally, I'd like to represent the combos in a two-axis lookup chart but I don't think that will work on the forum.
Below that we can have specific builds (Alucard?).
Keep an eye out for the new thread

Why would a MGK marine be a commando?
I'm thinking something more along the lines of 'bullet ninja'. Or 'gun fu master', but 'bullet ninja' sounds better.
