Title: YASD due to luck
Post by: BDR on November 29, 2006, 01:55
The post-mortem:
--------------------------------------------------------------
DoomRL (v.0.9.8.5) roguelike post-mortem character dump
--------------------------------------------------------------

hmph!, level 1 Former Human Corporal, killed by a lost soul
on level 2 of the Phobos base.
He survived 2355 turns and scored 491 points.
He didn't like it too rough.

He killed 8 out of 24 hellspawn. (33%)
He was an Angel of Berserk!

-- Statistics ------------------------------------------------

  Health 0/50   Experience 224/1
ToHit +0  ToDmg Ranged +0  ToDmg Melee +0

-- Traits ----------------------------------------------------

    Hellrunner     (Level 1)

-- Equipment -------------------------------------------------

    [a] [ Armor      ]   nothing
    [b] [ Weapon     ]   combat knife (1d6)
    [c] [ Boots      ]   nothing
    [d] [ Prepared   ]   nothing

-- Inventory -------------------------------------------------

-- Kills -----------------------------------------------------

    3 former humans
    1 former sergeant
    2 lost souls

-- History ---------------------------------------------------

He started his journey on the suface of Phobos.
On level 2 he battled through the complex.
There he finally was killed by a lost soul.

-- General ---------------------------------------------------

Before him 15 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 12 of those were killed.
1 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
And 2 couldn't handle the stress and commited a stupid suicide.

--------------------------------------------------------------

My first glimpse of how bad it was going to be came from seeing 6 humans, 1 sarge, and 1 lost soul when I opened the door.  Turns out there were actually about 3 or so hiding in that room.  I only had 2 medkits left (had to use the first two to survive the first level; nooby, I know), and it didn't take long even with dancing around the entrance to die.  So, what is the best trait to take when starting AoB?

Edit: Use the 'mortem' tag ^_^

I took brute and tough as nails... dont remember which first... it is mostly not so hard to get close to enemies, so i think speed bonus from hellrunner is not so important...
i noticed that if i took two brute traits then i had no good protection, and if i took two other traits first - damage level is too low... though TaN and Brute are not the only options here, of course. i tried to modify my toHit too, but dont know how melee works =)
i am kinda noob, managed to get to lvl9 on medium AoB in four tries.

Well, I managed level 3 now...

gah, level 2 Imp Corporal, killed by a former sergeant
on level 3 of the Phobos base.
He survived 7687 turns and scored 1075 points.
He didn't like it too rough.

He killed 22 out of 35 hellspawn. (63%)
He was an Angel of Berserk!

-- Inventory -------------------------------------------------

    [a] small med-pack

-- Kills -----------------------------------------------------

    10 former humans
    2 former sergeants
    5 imps
    1 lost soul

-- History ---------------------------------------------------

He started his journey on the suface of Phobos.
On level 2 he battled through the complex.
On level 3 he battled through a maze of rooms.
There he finally was killed by a former sergeant.

 17 of those were killed.
1 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.

Unfortunately there were just too many imps wandering around for me to survive long on level 3, even though I'd gotten a record 5 (small) medkits saved up.  That human sergeant, ironically, was the first enemy I saw, and only noticed him standing behind me after I'd been blown in range by an imp and took a step away (bringing me even closer to the shotgun blast).

as i see the most hard are the first levels... after Chained Court it gets much easier. i had lots and lots of stuff when entered hell... there it was still not very hard and if i didnt make a silly mistake at l20, i think i could win...
