The former humans aren't used to dealing with the trees on Phobos (I can't blame them, would you?). They keep trying to shoot at me through the tree and failing, I might try to run them out of ammo.
You see : a former human (unhurt) [m]ore | floor
Targeting canceled.

cautious Phobos Base Entry
edit: changed the screenshot, in this one even the guy on the bottom is joining the others inneffectually.

And if they decide to take the time to tweak the AI for trees, then they could place trees in more than just the Phobos entrance.
-
It's not just the enemies, player's aiming is also subject to this (the targeting line is green even when going through the trees.
-
The targeting indications for the player have already been fixed (at least in the ASCII version). As for enemies, currently all enemies assume that line of sight is the same as line of fire. This has always been true up to now (excluding barrels which could be destroyed). Making the AI separate line of sight and line of fire would be cool, and it would be quite helpful to modders, but it would require quite a bit of work. I think we'll see this at some point, but not for 0.9.9.6.
A quick fix for this particular issue could be to allow the trees to be destroyed.

I just tried running an HMP AoB run, and you can, indeed, run them out of ammo. Unfortunately (or fortunately for balance) apparently shotgun blasts go straight through the tree.
BTW, does anyone know why you can't corner-shoot around the trees? The line-of-fire acts like the tree isn't there.

...or make them block vision.

Trees can be destroyed; I've had an imp blow one i was trying to hide behind. One would assume trees are fragile and are similar to crates in terms of damage resistance.
