Title: backpack
Post by: Brewtal Legend on December 15, 2006, 11:40
It would be cool if you could make a backpack item that would increase the number of inventory slots you have in the game. Not by much, but maybe by at least 5 more items that you could carry at one time. Or even 3 more.

The idea for an backback also crossed my mind a few times but I would make it more like it is in Doom, increasing the ammo you can carry. In DoomRL that would mean increasing the amount of ammo each slot can hold.
On the other hand it's not really needed for DoomRL right now :p

Been requested before, and IIRC it is on low-priority updates list.

... and let me add that if a backpack would be added it would only raise ammo carrying capacity.

Even ammo carrying capacity would be cool because that would still help to save a little space in inventory for things like extra armor and medkits. I always have trouble managing my inventory. I come across loads of armor or ammo, then I need room for a new weapon or a medkit and I have to get rid of ammo or some armor before I can get it. I usually like to have a couple weapon. About 3. Any chance of adding the weapon slots like in the original doom? So that way the player can have all the weapons when they have found them all and save the inventory slots for ammo, armor, medkits, etc. ?

I always thought a backpack (Doom style, natch) would be a great addition to the game. :)

Brewtal, DoomRL can't be like original Doom. What would you say if player could have only 200 or 300 ammo for chaingun, no medkits nor armors to carry and so? Everything comes for a price. It's a roguelike so it has no real-time and it'd be too easy if you were fully armed and equiped walking tank. I think the size of current pack is balanced. Try to finish the game on AoLT challenge and then you'll know that it's huge, actually :)

I think that adding a backpack (as in Doom, Quake and so on) is a good addition. It'll be some (unique) item or a trait perhaps? Porter, master packager and beast of burden hehe :>

Would backpack add additional inventory slots for ammo, or increase the number of ammo you can have in one stack?

Increase the amount of ammo in one stack. It would be easier to implement as a trait tough...

Maybe it's just me, but I don't like the idea of a backpack very much... IMHO it would only complicate the game - I like DoomRL a simple RPG-shooter.

The great thing is that it wouldn't complicate the game at all, though... ;)

All you really have to do is pick it up and then feel its good effects.

That would be a one-time only powerup then. Probably not normaly generated, but available as a reward for completing a special level.

Still, I think that a trait that would allow you to carry more ammo in one slot (Ammo stacker, +10% per level?) would be beter than increasing the total number of slots. Might be useful for non-melee AoLT 8-)

No, no, no -- the will be NO EXTRA SLOTS :-P. I will probably make a poll wether "backpack" should be a trait or a powerup :-P.
