Title: Small change request for Juggler
Post by: Creaphis on March 17, 2012, 10:16
When I started playing (which was only about a week ago, I guess) I didn't know what quickkeys were, or I didn't think I should bother to use them, so the only benefit I got from juggler was the instant swapping with a prepared weapon. Now I realize that you can use juggler to instantly swap to any weapon from your inventory, as long as you have a quickkey bound to it. The problem that I have with this is that to get the full benefit of juggler, once you start using assemblies and uniques that don't have a quickkey by default, you have to save your game and edit the quickkeys configuration file to assign keys to your new weapons. I feel that the full benefits of juggler should be accessible from within the game itself. How about we just change juggler's functionality to, "You can now swap your weapons or equip any weapon from the inventory instantly," as this is effectively what the trait already does?

Or, if that seems overpowered when it's written out like this, how about "You can now swap your weapons instantly and equip weapons from the inventory in 0.5 seconds?" I think this would be interesting, as then there's still a major benefit to having a sidearm in your prepared slot rather than in the inventory, and the player then has to consider whether it's more important to equip a second weapon (for faster swapping) or ammo (for faster reloading).

Ability to quickkey any weapon is kinda hacky and it's generally not approved.

Already tried, and the command function apparently only allows assigning those 10 weapons.  So, they've already thought of that.

assemblies use the quick key of the base item

Okay, fair enough. I assumed that you could bind quickkeys to different weapons by modifying the config file, as the wiki (http://doom.chaosforge.org/wiki/Manual:keybindings.lua) says you can do this, though I didn't try it myself. This just makes Juggler even more quirky and unintuitive, though. Why can the Doomguy grab some weapons from his pack instantly and not others?

Completly agree, it's pretty annoying having cool stuff and somehow wishing to have crappier one instead... when you would need to juggle that Missile Launcher or Assault Shortgun but can't.

Tbh Juggler should get the Badass treatment and get split in 2 ranks :

* rank 1 : insta-swap to prepared wep, autouse of melee in prepared slot.

*rank 2 : quickened access (not instant, around 0.1 to 0.5 s) to any weapon in inventory.

Would have the double advantage to nerf the overpowered part of Juggler, while also making it work a lot more logically.

I like your suggestion. Juggler usually makes a huge difference to whether I survive a nasty situation, even without using quickkeys. Spreading its power over two levels is reasonable.

Another juggler oddity: Pretend that you have a chaingun in your weapon slot and a shotgun [0/1] in your prepared. You have a shotgun [1/1] in your backpack and you want to switch to that. Pressing the shotgun quickkey once will just equip your empty shotgun, and pressing it again will do nothing. You have no choice but to spend 1 second equipping the shotty. But, if you have another weapon in your inventory, like a pistol, you can press the quickkey for that, then the shotgun quickkey again, and you'll have your loaded shotty in your hands in 0 seconds.

What the heck? As far as the game is concerned, it's faster to equip two weapons than just one.

it should give you the empty one, last I knew quickkeys always gave the one with the least ammo to prevent juggler abuse like this

Nope.  It give you the one with the most ammo.

I actually approve the original poster's idea.

you'll have your loaded shotty in your hands in 0 seconds.
Just checked in case it was changed.Juggler still chooses the weapon with least ammo, so you'll just swap to unloaded shotgun from prepared slot.

In my download of 0.9.9.6G I can swap empty shotties for full ones in the way I described. I can't even guess why your copy acts differently.

I actually approve the original poster's idea.

Which idea is approved? The insta-swap, or the 0.5s swap? Oh boy, these are going to be interesting times in any case :) Rapid fire shotguns, here I come!

i like sirdec's idea best, but yeah i think the quick keys should be removed from being a gameplay effecting thing

Really, I could go any way: making Juggler usable on everything, give a partial benefit to all non-prepared swaps, and two-level trait changes are all reasonable. Balance wise, I think the first option makes it too powerful, but the others should be fine just as they are. Regardless, dropping the arbitrary use quickkeys is a must.
