So, playing AoP again, trying to beat it (still not nearly as hard as AoI, let me tell you that).
I had such an epic run too. Hell's Arena no damage (Int2 is a MASSIVE help there), only got hit one time in The Wall because a Baron strayed a bit too low and hit me while covered, Anti-Freak Jackal, Grammaton Cleric Beretta (I seriously wished that I had taken Gun Kata at that point), first ever BFG10k (Leaving only the Dragonslayer among uniques to pick up to confirm that I got it).
Using the Anti-Freak Jackal for taking out long-range targets and the Nuclear Plasma Rifle for heavy-duty damage if an enemy got too close for comfort, I made it through most of the levels with relative ease.
Lava pits were a real pain because I only had 1 envirosuit and no phases. Somehow I walked through lava and eventually made it to more envirosuits. After that clearing the place out was a cakewalk.
At the end of level 23 I was out of med-packs and down to a mere 4% health (2HP). With the help of Int2, I snuck up on her, used the lava element and unleashed hell upon her. The invincibility ended faster than I expected, though. I had used up most of my weapons.
Here's the amazing part: I was at 84% health (42 health). I had onyx-modded red armor. The SM was at Mortally Wounded. I reloaded the Missile Launcher...and was killed instantly. Did the reload really last THAT LONG to give the SM god knows how many attacks killing me instantly? Ugh, and I wanted to get the Grammaton Cleric Cross as well... I think that if the reload really took that long, the only feasible action would have been to just run behind a corner, switch to the Anti-Freka Jackal that I haven't used yet and use that to bring her down to Almost Dead, switch to and reload the Beretta and then, using full automatic, kill her with that. Ugh...so close...

Well, Spidey gets four shots per attack _and_ has 150% speed, so she can often act twice before you do for a total of eight 3d5 shots. Way enough to instakill you.
-
Let's face it. Reloading in the LoS of an enemy is just not a good idea in general, missile launcher or not. SM fires a whole volley of things at you, so you should have run away before reloading.
Heck, even if your reloading time were 0.4s, I would still advice not doing so in front of the enemy.
-
Maybe you accidentally went for the alternate reload? That mistake has gotten me killed on more than one occassion, too :S
Leaving only the Dragonslayer among uniques to pick up to confirm that I got it
Erm... I ran into DS twice, never was able to pick it up. It is listed in my found items, however... fortunate bug? Or is attempting to pick it up enough?
-
Or is attempting to pick it up enough?
It is, thankfully.
-
Attempting to pick DS up is enough.
And yeah - 42 hp vesus (3d5-2)*8 is definitely not enough.
Actually i think SM's ranged attack is OP.
Plasma damage which ignores half of your armor and there's no way to get additional plasma resistance(except cerberus).
3d5 damage, which means your already halved armor is most likely close to useless.
4 shots, so even if you have some cool armor it will break after several volleys.
150% speed, which means you need HR2+ some boots or something else to dance around the pillars.
Fast doomguys have it dangerous but possible but what those who can't dodge(i.e. MAD) shall do?
Added:
2TS: don't forget about nuclear overcharge.
-
She IS the final boss. Can't be a pushover.
@LuckyDee - Alternate reload would actually help in this situation. A partial win is still a win.
-
Can't be a pushover and kills you in one turn(or two sequential) are different things.
Imagine you got first time to Dis."Oh, there's the boss.Ok? let's try shooting this thing with X.What? What post-mortem?What was that?"
-
Alternate reload would actually help in this situation.
On a missile launcher?! You must be high on plutonium (again)... ;)
-
Oh, I thought you were talking about the nuclear plasma rifle... my bad.
-
Okay, a few things to mention.
1) I used a regular reload. I should have ran first, I realise that now. But still, when JC is much easier than the SM, and JC is supposed to be the true final challenge...disproportionate? A 6d6 rocket launcher that needs reloading after every shot + monster summons VS a (3d5-2)x8 plasma-damage dealing chaingun that doesn't need reloading...
2) I never even found the dragonslayer. If I did, I think I would have tried to pick it up :P
3) I am probably gonna try and do a few UV standard runs, at least until I get the Standard UV badges. After that I'll try UV AoMC to get Gatekeeper and Scavenger Diamond.
4) I guess I should also mention that the damage the SM dealt I vastly underestimated. I thought that she dealt (2d5)x3 damage, not (3d5-2)x8
-
(3d5-2)x8 is what you had with your armor, her super chaingun is (3d5)x4.It's just she is fast so sometimes she can take action twice.
-
I didn't fully read the OP when jumping into this thread, but after doing so, it's pretty easy to see what happened.
AlterASc's analysis was pretty much spot-on; I'd just like to say that in your shoes, I'd have gone for a partial win in a heartbeat.
-
SM requires special tactics to defeat, for almost any build. +movespeed really really helps. If you can assemble Tac Armor + Tac Boots, then you'll be able to out-run her. You can only stand there and slug it out with her if you've a melee build. The Lava Element only gives nine turns of invulnerability. Use them wisely.
When I beat AoSh, it was with Shottyhead, tac boots, tac armor, and the assault shotgun from the Mortuary. I could unload the entire gun, then still have time to pop around the next corner, AND fully reload. She never got within range. Would have beaten her damageless if I weren't stupid in the beginning of the match.
