Title: Ascii Dreams 2013
Post by: Gamer-man on December 24, 2012, 14:29
Let's get out the vote and get DoomRL up the list.  Currently it is in 7th place, after tome4, adom (the two that are dominating), Dungeon Crawl:  Stone Soup, Dwarf Fortress, Adom2, and FTL.
Interesting thing to note:  if adom wins this year, and doomrl passes FTL and ADOM2, the top 5 will all be former winners of ascii dreams.

Interesting "Diablo III" option.

DoomRL got my vote mainly for the G release.

Also Sil : "classic" in presentation, with a very modern design. Too bad i really suck at it lol.

My other favorite RL's just didn't release anything major enought to get a vote.
Plenty of newcomers too that seem to be promising games, but since i didn't play them...

Ascii Dreams 2012 has ended, here are the results of the top games
TOME 1659
ADOM 1445
ADOM2 730
Dungeon Crawl SS 687
Dwarf Fortress 605
FTL 454
UnReal World 442
DoomRL 393
Brogue 349
Dungeons of Dreadmore 280
Sword of the Stars: Pit 180
Torchlight 2 175
Cataclysm 173
Binding of Isaac 150
Caves of Qud 138
X@COM 135
TomeNET 133
Sil 130

DoomRL has managed to more than double its number of votes, and move from last year's 9th place, to this year's 8th place!  Congradulations Kornel!

Interesting to note, the top 5 games includes 3 past winners, a classic, and the classic's direct sequal.  Perhaps the genre is getting somewhat static with the 2 newcomers not coming until 6th and 7th (then followed by past winner doomrl). So, the genre is just like every other genre now :P

I didn't even try. The moment that Biskup and DarkGod started spamming, I decided that it's not worth promoting and bothering people with the vote. The only thing that makes me sad is that AliensRL got so little votes :<

I'm quite surprised that ADOM 1&2 made it this high, given the fact that no new version of 1 is publicly available (donators only, to the best of my knowledge), and 2 doesn't yet seem good enough to me, IMHO. I'd say that people are mostly excited about the development going on after such a long hiatus.

ToME is no surprise for me. DarkGod is really spamming (in my eyes, not a bad thing per se), but the development of what I call a really good game made huge progress even during those few months I'm playing it. The excitement part from a final V1 being very very close most likely plays a part here as well, but I must give credit to DarkGod for his work.

The same goes for DCSS. It has a well-established positin in the RL world, ever-ongoing development, two tourneys per year. And, to put it simple, for me it's currently the best roguelike around.

I would say that AliensRL are simply not established and known enough yet to score big in this survey. It's only IMHO, but it seems to me that there's really a small number of players who didn't get to AliensRL through DoomRL, and some may say "nah, just some DoomRL clone in a different setting". Understandable for me, as well as it's understandable for me that Kornel feels sad about it.

And DoomRL as number 8? I certainly find this a reason to conrgatulate Kornel :).

for me, alien and aliens were siege movies, so making the game an assault game doesn't feel right to me, though enemies popping from the vents does help a little.  But hey, Aliens RL got rounded to 1%, not terrible considing you didn't promote the poll and that AliensRL has been a secondary (tertiary?) project for you.

The other game i supported, Brogue, did fairly well too (9th).  considering the collapse the other new comers to the top 10 had between 2011 and 2012, i think brogue did fairly well.
