Anyone who has anything to add, please do.
My personal questions are:
Fallout3 - I wasn't aware that it had changed ownership AND was an active project.
So WTF, mate?
Fallout Mods - is anyone aware of one which is *playable*, or might be in the near future? FMF is on life support, last I've heard.
Fallout RL - I haven't tried Alphaman 'cause I heard it was really bad. Other than that, I've heard of many post-nuclear projects (or indeed Fallout RLs and modules) which were only very theoretical.
Why?! This is one game with massive potential left completely untapped! I assume all Fallout Tactics objectors agree this is due to a lack of dialogue and depth, so we know what's *not* there, why doesn't someone, with the tools to create it, do something about it?? Certainly, I'll be glad to help in any way possible - map, quest and character desgins, whatever, and I'm sure there are others here who'll act the same - please speak up. With enough serious people on the project, it won't take up your lives unless you'll want it to.
So, is anyone up for the job?

Thanks! I've heard of it but kept forgetting to check it out.
Oh, and there're modding details!
-
Fallout 2 MegaMod is rather good, though I highly recommend waiting for the next release (it will be announced on NMA mentioned here), since 2.0 is buggy as hell.

Try to find "Awaken" mod for it - you'll be surprised...
Their site is down, unfortunately.

FalloutRL -> Okeee, gather 500$ in FalloutRL dedicated donations, and I'll do it :P
-
TFoN- Have you ever played Wasteland? It's the spirtual predescessor to Fallout, and in my humble opinion, is as good as, if not better, than the Fallout series. Forgive my heresy if I offend :P But while it's not a RL per se, it's more rogueish, if I'm making any sense. Check it out at http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?gameid=2425

It's Dos only and so far i know, DosBox don't give any sounds for Xp systems. I want FalloutRl !!!!

Ahhhh. I have a old machine dedicated to old games and roguelike, I probably should have mentioned it's a bit of an oldie. Oh well. I suppose I'm just wierd like that. Tho I would like a FalloutRl, but I'm a poor college student:(

you mean for this particular game i suppose? i play other games in doxbox (in xp), and there the sound/music is fine.

Awaken, MegaMod. Thanks :)
I have Win2000 - I'm kinda' pressed to manage with what I have, considering my "too ancient; not ancient enough" computer.
All kinds of abandonware I've been downloading have to wait, which is annoying as hell considering there are newer games I don't want to play, but can.
I guess I'll add Wasteland to the list.
$500? I'm broke :)
But we'll see, in a few months... It's a worthy cause ^^
Is there any way beside paypall to donate?
-
Nobody said one person would have to pull out that 500$ :P. As for other methods -- I dunno. If there's any that will allow me to withdraw the money here in poland, it would work. Also all Visa/Mastercard credit cards work without a paypal account, as long as they support electronic payment. So all that is needed is a friend with a credit card :P.
-
A card and account I have, they're just very empty 8P
Well, I guess I'll check with the officials once it becomes relevant.

Hey, sure, that'd be great, but I can't talk for anyone else :)

I really want to donate you, Kornel! But i'm only Russian student that programming games as you, for free, belive me, i don't have much money.)) So untill i will find second work(for money), i won't be able to help.
-
Modeling the game after Wasteland (except with random areas) but keeping it in the FO universe sounds like a good idea.

To the starving student. MS Virtual PC is free now, so why not pull a copy, and set yourself an virtual DOS or 9x box? That was the only way I ever got WarHammer40k: Chaos Gate to run clean. It SHOULD handle sound ok, and if you're thinking RL only, you won't have to give up much drive space. It'll be slower than you parent PC, but it should handle a roguelike just fine. Also, you can run it in a window, and watch a movie at the same time. Perfect for my short attention span.

Well, I just downloaded Wasteland, and managed to find and order copies of Fallout I, II, and Tactics on E-bay. (They came as a bundle, or I would have ignored Tactics.) Soon enough I will have learned the joy that comes from playing these titles you all seem to love.
Of course, Fallout isn't here quite yet, so I'll be playing Wasteland and anything else I can find online during my 12 hour shift this afternoon.
In other news, I hate my life. :)
-
Great choice! I'm sure you'll be as enchanted as the rest of us.
I strongly suggest sticking to the plot-line, playing Fallout I before II. Graphically and with regards to character and general game design there's almost no difference at all, so there's no real reason to compare prematurely and possibly spoil some surprises.
Tactics has much better graphics which IMO could have suited the originals very well. It also has some other very nice additions, which could have likewise fit in. If the mods are as good as it's been suggested, I think it's worth getting anyway. Unfortunately, neither of my relics/computers can allow me to check them out for myself just yet :)

When I ever get Paypal I'll donate to you to work on Berserk! more...

Okay, just so that everybody knows:
There are some things that you have to do in order to make Fallout 1 and 2 work on a newer version of Windows (IE, XP). For Fallout 1, choose to run the program in Win 95 compatibility mode, and override the screen refresh in dxdiag. Set it to 60. For Fallout 2, run it in Win 98/NT compatibiliy. I don't know about Tactics yet, as I haven't installed it yet.
Reasons why: Fallout 1 displays only objects on the screen that are actually moving. Which means that the screen is black most of the time. This is "not good". Fallout 2, won't even run unless it's running in the compatibility mode.

I don't know if I'd call FO3 alive and kicking...
Bethesda (the people who brought you Oblivion) bought the IP (intellectual property) rights to FO, and let Interplay keep a license, on the conditions that they have to start full-scale development of a FO MMO (uhm, that could be bad...) within 2 years, and publish it within 4.
While it would be foolish for interplay to let FO get away from them, I also don't think they much care, since they've sat on it for how many years now?
I think the outcome (whatever it may be) will be the same if something similar happens to the Dungeon Keeper IP.
