Tried to get through AoPc 26 times, so I ran out of names, but since my last win was Flanders, Lets just say that this was Grandpa Simpson. You know what I mean, it would go something like this:
Huh? where am I? what are all these monsters doing here? *Points at AoD* DEEEEEAAAAAAATH! Ooh hey a box....What does this big red button do?

78 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
62 of those were killed.
7 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
And 6 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.
3 souls destroyed the Mastermind...
2 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
1 killed the bitch and survived.

Good run - feel like going for Pacifist Gold as well?
-
Yeah, after a while, you'll pretty much give up on naming DoomGuy and just set Random Names to True or something and keep doing it.
If I remember correctly, Pacifism Gold just requires you to complete the run in under 10 minutes.

There's a random name generator?!? *checks config files*
and yes, I intend to try for pacifism gold at some point. not right now, it got so frustrating I almost wanted to punch a hole in my monitor, that tends to be my queue to take a break lol.

I know that feeling. I have to say, though, DoomRL is really good at helping you cope with these frustrations :)

I tried again for about an hour, only beat it once, shaved my time down to 12 minutes.
I don't care what the label says though, this is NOT an Easy angel. at least medium, it's only easy if the stairs are right there or maybe if scouts could still see stairs right away, THEN it would be easy. That and if you get stuck in a hallway (or worse, the stairs being in a hallway blocked by a barrel, instant loss.) My dead DoomGuy count is now 3 digits lol.

It's mostly a luck thing, although it actually involves at least some strategy. Best thing about it is that it's great a teaching you how to get yourself out of trouble a.s.a.p., should the need arise.

I have been learning a great deal about the game mechanics from a player standpoint trying to get the gold badge. Mostly though I've learned that:
1.You almost always die early,
2.When you play really fast the game lags
3.Imps love to follow you
4.Shotgunners are more dangerous than anything that isn't a revanant. They are playing pinball and you are the ball.
5. There needs to be a way to move barrels blocking the stairs, or jump over an enemy in a hallway...at least the barrels blocking the stairs part.
-
Can't say I agree with pts 1 and 2, but 3 and 4 I can vouch for.
In regard to point 5, there is a solution: it's the sergeants you mentioned under point 4 :S
-
2.When you play really fast the game lags
I'm going on a limb and assume several things:- You are playing with graphical tiles.
- You kept things like BloodSlides, Flashing on.
- You left the MorePrompt option on as well.
- You didn't turn off hints.
Those are rather massive time sappers that make it hard to shave time off. At the risk of self-promotion, here's my AoPc win (http://forum.chaosforge.org/index.php/topic,6654.0.html). Yes, I used the Scout class, and get as much speed/dodge boost I can first (HR/DM), before cranking up HP and intrinsic armour. I took only a level of Badass to help a little with storing up more health -- knockback can be, in many ways, your friend since it allows you to get propelled farther and hopefully more towards your goal of the stairs.
Stair-sense is useful because it allows you to cut back on the cognitive burden of discovering the location of the stairs -- that cognitive burden can sap off quite a bit of time, actually. Maybe you can try this out for your next Pacifism Gold Badge run.

...'cept unfortunately, it doesn't work on AoPc...
-
Oh right. That was for my Strongman run.
rofl.
But more speed is always good.

What exactly are bloodslides? I didn't turn that off because I dont know what it is.
