if there's an item lying on the stairs it's impossible to find it by any means I tried, other than removing every item by trial and error .. meeeh. ..
.) line of sight won't work when you used a computer map
.) 'l'ook command doesn't give a clue, only describes the item lying there
.) neither does the 'X' command (I would consider implementing it there in any case)
maybe the easiest solution would be to make it impossible to drop items on stairs?
or maybe like in some games (ADOM) where you have a command to show the map without items

This situation does not happen very often, but is a real pain when it does. It would be nice to have this fixed. Not allowing items to be dropped on the stairs may be the easiest solution.

Yeah, I understand. Probably I won't allow droping items on stairs.

hehee, just had an idea, maybe do it so that items dropped on stairs "fall" down to the next level =-D
nah, just joking, I realize what this would do to balance and inventory managment :p
-
LOL, that would create a very tedious way to transport huge piles of items across levels xD.

This can happen waaay to often on N! games with all those respawning former foos, plus there's no case where it is as important to be able to quickly locate and head for the exit.

You might not know that, but this was done in at least one roguelike game before: I think its official name was Jaunt Trooper: Mission Thunderbolt (as well as in its sequel, mission Firestorm, available for Macs only). The items dropped down the stairs this way could become damaged in the process (you didn't want to fire damaged weapons there, unless absolutely necessary) or even break on impact. On the other hand, you could fix damaged objects as well, or drop a pillow there first to make the drop safer.
I'm not sure about the policy here about links to other gaming sites, but I can give the link if you contact me in private.

Zarin.
