Requests For Features / Re: Request for Ideas : Unique Items
« on: January 28, 2008, 20:39 »
I know I'm late to the party, but here it goes:

Lance - melee weapon:
5d6, long range - can be used against enemies two steps away.  In order to hit a non-adjacent enemy, you press 'f' (fire) and direction, otherwise you just walk towards the adversary :)  Or you press 'f' and then aim as usual (makes 'knight move' hit possible).
This one would be great against demons - and even AoD when berserkering.

I just started playing again, and uniques are a great addition!  Thus I decided to give Kornel some ideas for the future :)

Discussion / Fastload combat shotgun - surprisingly decent
« on: April 25, 2007, 12:41 »
Hello,
I've found fastload combat shotgun really early - level 3, before Hell's Arena - and decided to try and use it.  Normal reload on combat shotguns already works slightly faster, so I though "why not?"  To my surprise, I managed to fire/recharge 4 times point-blank at a Cacodemon without retaliation!  (The caco in question is long dead, of course:).  I'll try it some more but I managed to pull that trick again with the same success, so I suspect reload time on it is really waaay down.
Once I get to Knights/Barons it will be a different story (here hoping to get to double SG before that).

FWIW,
    Zarin.

Pre-0.9.9 / Re: [U|100%|Win] 1st win 0.985
« on: April 15, 2007, 13:09 »
I see what you mean by "still experimenting with the other traits" :).  Juggler?!

Anyway, winning on UV is huge!!!  Congratulations!

BTW, how soon did you acquire Int(3)?  Did you have it in the Arena?  I know that killing the Barons there from out of sight is easy, but plowing through all the Cacodemons first may prove difficult.

Also, when and where did you find advanced double shotgun?  I know that the rest of the advanced weaponry you had is available in the Mortuary (and advanced rocket launcher even earlier), but this baby is truly random.  Did you have a chance to use it?

Discussion / Re: Ideas for nerfing Int(3) and AoB.
« on: April 10, 2007, 14:41 »

I disagree on the difficulty part. Higher difficulty also means (much) more XP and more ammo spawns. I personally found doing AoMr runs on UV easier than on M (pre weapons mods that is). The problem with the difficulties is, that the dangerous monsters still spawn quite late and the biggest part of the mass is still cannon fodder.
Well... How about knifing your way through (or even simply evading on your mad run to the stairs) some Hell Knights on level 3?  They are UV regulars there :).  Hell, even simple sergeants can be deadly for an AoB if they are spawned often enough - and on UV they are.
So please don't go nerfing AoB.  At most make the ultimate spoily weapon miss slightly more or feel less protected with it.

FWIW,
    Zarin.

Great!  Only this morning I thought "I played so many characters that died young (only the first 6 were "too young to die", though :) and that quantity might have gone too far".  The number 256(=28) hasn't occurred to me yet, but I was close to realizing it :)

Pre-0.9.9 / [M|AoB|92%|Win] My second win!
« on: April 03, 2007, 08:13 »
Started off innocently, trying to achieve Captain rank.  I'm not used enough to AoI and AoLT challenges, so I decided to first reach l15 in AoB.  It turned out that it was too modest a goal!  No save-scumming, the only save which was backed up is on the stairs to Unholy Cathedral - I decided that if I fail the first time I'll try to replay it.  As it turned out, no replaying was necessary :)  I was at 88% health (Ironman(2) at that point) and already berserkering before meeting Angel of Death, but decided to use large med-kit "just in case".  He brought me down to around 70% before dying, so even that might not have been needed.

I didn't find Invulnerability Globes before Phobos Arena so had to resort to a normal win.  I used only one large med-kit!  Not to mention that I forgot to switch armors from blue to red.  I had no AA - only one large med-kit before Mortuary which I decided was not enough :(

Oh, and I had to reinstall DoomRL prior to this game because it kept crashing (Kornel says the reason might be score.dat).  I kept my player.dat, though.

Pre-0.9.9 / Re: [U|AoMr|Win] Cybie killed John Wayne style ;)
« on: March 30, 2007, 19:05 »
Did you feel like asking 'Do ya feel lucky, punk?  Well do ya?' before you killed Cybie?

Well...  Blade is Russian, so I suspect he might have different quotes in mind :).  I myself left Russia (still Soviet Union back then) long time ago, so I don't know the most recent/popular movies there right now, but I might guess a couple of lines typical for people my age.

53
Congratulations!

By the way, I made the same mistake reporting my first win.  If you don't read "Da rulez!" post, just add [ mortem] [ /mortem] (without spaces, of course) tags around your ... mortem :)

Discussion / Re: On Angel of Berserk mode
« on: March 29, 2007, 13:39 »
Sounds really strange - you can go all coward with shotguns, but chainguns are different story.  I always switch to aggressive when shooting the chaingun.  A Cacodemon is killed in 3-4 bursts on aggressive while on coward 6 or more are necessary (tested many times in Hell's Arena).  And since it has quite a big fireball you will be hit more during those 6+ bursts, not less.  Not to mention the fact that sergeants and captains are usually killed in one aggressive burst (thus never even hitting you), but need 3-4 on coward.

There was a topic here somewhere in which several people agreed that the extra damage and chance to hit on aggressive make up for the increased chance to be hit - unless, of course, you have 4-6 Arachs shooting at you from all directions :).  And that's where TaN and Ironman both shine.

Good luck,
    Zarin.

As you can see, I reached level 15, but when I select "Show Player" from the menu, "reach level 15" isn't grayed out while two other achievements are.  The problem is - I reached level 15 on Angel of Marksmanship challenge, but so far couldn't do the same in regular game (I don't get enough uninterrupted time at home lately, so my play is sloppy).  I will overcome this, but it seems peculiar to say the least.  Is it a bug?  I don't know.  Does it "not quite meet player's expectations"?  Absolutely!

FWIW,
    Zarin.

An additional information which I somehow skipped the first time.

Before all those line numbers and file names, there was the following:
An unhandled exception occurred at $0041D93A : ERamgeError : Range check error

I hope you kept symbol maps for the latest release :)

Hope that helps,
    Zarin.

Didn't help - I deleted save, removed readonly flag (tried it several times, even with chmod 777 * */* . from cygwin) to no avail.  So it is not readonly - or at least not just that.

Besides, by using ls -l I found that all files have -rwx------ permissions, giving access to owner only - and I'm their owner.  In fact, the only two files which changed permissions after I ran chmod were player.dat and score.dat - I guess those two are modified each time I play :).

If you find a quick workaround please post it - I really want to become Lieutenant.

By the way, will there be any problem if I save my player.dat, remove and reinstall the game and then copy it over the new (empty) one?

Regards,
    Zarin.

Requests For Features / Re: Question on Arach Caves
« on: March 28, 2007, 10:12 »
Well,
sometimes the game is just a bitch.  I once had a game where I didn't get any large med-packs (I did see one former captain and one Baron use them :) and very few small ones - fortunately, including all four from the entrance - but that's it.  I survived until quite deep on a few Supercharge globes, all guaranteed (Arena, Chained Court, Halls of Carnage) and a few Berserker packs, but then got creamed when a Baron destroyed a wall behind me, opening the way for another Baron and a couple of Cacodemons or Knights, maybe even commandos or Arachs (I don't remember exactly whom).

As for the original question, I did encounter two Arach caves in a row during my only legitimate (not save-scummed) win.  I went shottyman route, which is probably the worst for such places (even Double SG doesn't cover 360o), and managed to survive by burning through all of my med-packs and shotgun shells, and then switching to chainsaw to finish off the few remaining ones.  This was on medium (hey, not too rough!) difficulty, and by then I had Ironman(3)/TaN(2), which is immensely helpful.

I think this is just the part of the game and you simply learn to deal with it.

FWIW,
    Zarin.

Discussion / Advanced double SG - wow!!! Just wow!!!
« on: March 28, 2007, 09:09 »
Hello,
I'm a fan of Shottyman/double shotgun.  In one of my recent games I managed to find advanced double shotgun ((6d4)x2).  What can I say - it's nice to kill Arachnotrons or Arch-Viles in 2 shots :).  Barons are sturdier than that, of course, so for them I still use "get next to them, switch to CS, kill in 3 hits" routine unless I can take them from afar with my (advanced) rocket launcher.

On higher (than HNTR) difficulties, though, I get hit way too much while closing the distance with a shotgun.  I'll have to learn to use plasma rifles, despite the ammo being much scarcer.

FWIW,
    Zarin.

Hello,
my installation went into a crazy mode where each death is followed by a crash, the game is saved, and then restarted with a negative life.  For some reason, when I check properties of DoomRL installation directory I see a gray check in "read only" box, but even when I uncheck it and apply change (to all files and subfolders, mind you) the same crash happens again next time.
<Edit>  This is the latest release - 0.9.8.5, Windows, with sound. </Edit>

This bug prevented me from reaching Lieutenant rank - I did reach level 10 in Angel of Impatience challenge (who ever said it was MEDIUM?  AoB is easier than that, at least for me!) but the death did not register properly.

Here is the information printed out during my latest crash:
