Discussion / Assemblies thoughts
« on: February 18, 2011, 10:30 »
I'm curious as to what others are thinking about the Assemblies so far.

First: Speedloader Pistols are really, really good. They solve the major problem of a Marksman build, and thanks to the Chained Court change and the starting AoM mod (reset for Technical), they're very easy to assemble. I think the Speedloader is better than any other Pistol Assembly, Exotic, or Unique, with the singular exception of the Blaster (which does the same thing, just better); its speed advantage is just too much for the others to supplant. (Though I'll never say no to the Jackal, because the ability to break walls with a pistol is godly. The Blaster and Energy Pistol do that too though, I think...) It's good enough that I'd consider going for two even if you needed Whizkid, since I don't run MGK.

Second: Power Armor is the best armor in the game. Anything that could be better is much harder to assemble, requiring multiple Uniques and Whizkid and resulting in something with less move speed and knockback resistance. (See: Nanofiber Skin Cybernetic. Nanofiber is just terrible in general.) The problem is, it's so good, there's no real reason to use the Nano Pack on anything else, and a good number of assemblies require it.

Third: Tactical Armor and Boots are probably tied at my second favorite Assembly (after the Speedloader). Not having to carry any Green or Blue Armor is really nice for inventory space, and the Tactical Boots are the best footwear thanks to their move speed and knockback resist. (Phaseshift is a little slower and it adds to knockback, so it's not worth it unless you find the armor too.) The new Chained Court also means you can get one of them guaranteed on every run if you want it.

Fourth: When would you actually use High Power Weapon as it stands? You might if you're running Ammochain, but I don't think you can add Agility Mods to a High Power Weapon even with Whizkid, so accuracy is a problem even if reloading isn't. Most builds don't run Reloader unless you're running Shottyman, but Shotguns can't be modded with High Power and neither can Rocket Launchers, so Fireangel can't use it, either. (I'm pretty sure you CAN mod a Missile Launcher to be High Power, which seems like more reason to go to the Wall in such runs. Add a Bulk first and it's a three-shot 6d8, which is a fair trade.) You could put it on a BFG, I guess. I think you should be able to use it with the Combat Shotgun, though; yes, it might be a bit of an automatic inclusion in builds with Shottyman, but looking at the above items, I'm guessing that isn't why it was excluded.

The mechanic is really good, if a little inconsistent in the power levels. I'm looking forward to reading about the Master assemblies whenever the recipes are found!

You enter a big arena. There's blood everywhere. You hear heavy mechanical
 footsteps...

 Fire -- Choose target...
The Cyberdemon fires! You are hit! Your Angelic Armor is damaged!
Fire -- Choose target...   The Cyberdemon reloads his rocket launcher.

-- General ---------------------------------------------------

Before him 72 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 64 of those were killed.
1 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
And 7 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Made the mistake of entering The Vaults with one normal Phase; I wanted to grab the Vaults Silver. (Still need one more for Sarge Major.) Otherwise, I would have gotten YAAM.

Early game went well; got my Combat Shotgun very early, so the Hell's Arena victory was near-ensured. Nearly managed to die anyway due to really bad Cacodemon spawning in the third round.

I got incredibly lucky with my Exotics/Uniques this time around; I picked up the Onyx Armor around 7-8, picked up a Power Mod for it in Hell's Armory, then found the Super Shotgun a little bit before Hell. The Planeshift Boots around ~16 were gravy (and I swapped them out for a fresh pair that generated around 20). I got a ridiculous number of large medpacks and a homing phase before the Mortuary, so I decided that I'd go for it. I went in with around 160%, triggered the phase, and fought my way from the lower left corner to the middle using only my Super Shotgun; I think I killed at least 20 arachotrons there. Then I picked up the Assault Shotgun and left without the Nuclear BFG. I never found another nuke. The lava caves were for the hell of it, and the Cyberdemon consisted entirely of "play ring around the rosy with shotguns".

A good first win, even if it's one I don't really feel like I earned; the Super Shotgun and Onyx Armor really carried it for me. Now to try for AoMr... Or yet another AoB, if I'm feeling crazy. (My previous attempts have not been kind to my win percentage.)

Requests For Features / Second Pistol Master Trait
« on: March 29, 2010, 14:25 »
One thing that stands out about the Master Traits is that there are currently seven, and three of the four weapon groups have two Master Traits each. Melee has Vampire (tank) and Blademaster (speed/dodge), Shotgun has Army of the Dead (tank) and Fireangel (evasive tank + rocket launcher for armor, though it loses a lot on AoSg), and chainfire has Ammochain (all-out offensive) and Cateye (tactical/defensive). Pistol has Gun Kata, which is largely defensive.

Right now, there's basically two pistol builds, the Gun Kata build and a more offensive one, which uses Dualgunner and Son of a Bitch or Finesse. I think it'd make the game a bit more interesting if there was a second Master Trait corresponding to the offensive builds.

One idea I had:

Bullet Dance
Requires: Dualgunner, Triggerhappy (1)
Blocks: Finesse, Tough as Nails, Reloader
Changes pistol alternate fire to full-auto; fires up to six bullets. (Works with Triggerhappy if there are enough bullets to fire; bulk mods become useful!)

Thoughts on balancing the alternate fire (any combination of below):
1) Make it do shrapnel damage (double enemy armor)
2) Double firing time (with Son of a Gun 2, 1.44; with Son of a Gun 3, 0.96)
3) Decrease accuracy (to +1 or +2?)

I'm half-tempted to say that the fact you would go through ammo ridiculously quickly would balance it, even without the above options. It'd still be tactically useful with them, especially since you'd have +4-+6 bonus damage per bullet; it'd allow you to make one enemy very, very dead (or several enemies in a line) in exchange for needing a second to reload - if enemies were spread out, you'd be comparatively helpless (especially if you weren't near a door) if you used it and didn't have a second to reload.

It'd be similar to the Grammaton Cleric Baretta's option select, but with a lower magazine, base damage, and whatever nerfs are applied to it; the Cleric Baretta would certainly still be a useful pick-up. The Trigun, Blaster, and Anti-Freak Jackal might all be a bit ridiculous with it, though. I think Gun Kata would be slightly stronger, since it'd be better against groups, but this would be devastating with proper use of walls and/or a Unique or Blaster.

Thoughts?
