I'm not even sure I believe it's possible to do N! damageless without cheating.
I've managed to get through N! dlvls one and two without any damage.

it made me cry tears

it's so hard to get through the entrance without getting punched once

I can't advise enough the importance of removing the notion that doomrl can be played damageless
Oh, I know that. I've tried runs where I go for minimal damage badges. It's doable, but I ultimately end up losing patience. It's just not fun that way!

Um, but yeah. For some reason I thought there was an Angelic Conqueror Damageless badge.

Turns out there isn't. So that solves that problem. Still seems like bad design that there are areas that have unavoidable damage (if you're going for 100%), though.

Ah, I didn't realise the arena awards are random (how unusual!). I got acid-proof boots, which are pretty useless for the chained court aren't they? :)
I look forward to having a go with some serious melee resistance, but in all fairness it's the acid (torso) damage that's the killer on CC+. Maybe I should just get dodgemaster+3xberserk and charge at the arena master, then the stairs, never going back? :)
What I've gotten are:
*Acid boots
*Ballistic Vest
*Phaseshift armour

Also, the barons seriously don't do much damage while you're chainsaw-berserked! With some form of +movespeed you should be able to sidestep your way to melle range. With PRed, they do 1-6 damage WHEN they hit; very manageable!

4
I gave this challenge a go last night. I'd taken a total of 4 damage by the time I got to the chained court, but didn't have berserker, and I think I killed 1 opponent in the chained court before I died.
My usual tactic for CC+ is occupying one of the leftmost doors from the bunker, corner shooting until a baron wanders in from the right. I then leave the starting bunker to the left, and walk around the top of the bunker. The top area, above the bunker, is my favourite part of the level for line shooting barons, and I hang around there as long as possible, sometimes doing another 'lap' in running mode through the starting room or around the bottom of the bunker.
On AoH, though, even with hellrunner, there's basically no chance of taking it slow like that. I'm starting to wonder whether I should immediately use a berserk to get up there, and use the other berserks every time I do a 'lap'... I'll have another try tonight.
If you got the phaseshift armour from the arena, I'd strongly recommend trying blowing the middle/corner of the bunker open and just running at the barons with a chainsaw. They wont' do much against your 90% resistance, and tend to butter like melt to the mighty chainsaw. But I'm gonna have to work on a tactic like yours if I ever plan on doing a low-damage run.

Quote
ps. I think doing UV AoHu as a conquerer without taking berserker might actually be reaching a bit far for me, but I'm enjoying exploring the idea. I think you're on the right track, though, with your build.
Berserk and vampyre basically meant I had ~18 hp and 60% resistances all the time, which is enough to survive anything but plasma. Most kills turned out to be life-neutral trades (thanks to vampyre), so I could basically charge straight at most mobs by the end of it. Lifted the build off someone else who did a AoOC+AoHu run.

Maybe rocket jump past the trigger point of the ambush?
But that involves taking damage :x

Equipping an armor takes 1.0s. Unequipping an armor takes 1.0s. How much time does it take to equip one when you're already wearing another? Is there a difference between going about this trough the inventory or through the character screen?

And while we're at it, does this go for weapons and boots, too? I seem to recall something like that...
Equipping any armour from inventory takes 1s. Doesn't matter if you're wearing amour at the time.

Unequipping armour from the character screen takes 1s + equipping armor takes 1s. 2s total for that route.

Question:
How does one avoid taking damage during the phobos lab ambushes? The sergeants always seem to manage to get a shot in when I trigger the walls, and I can't seem to pre-crack them with rockets.

You're actually attempting AoHu on a melee build?

Personally, I'd take about fifteen levels of INT and every gun I could find... restec-pah!
The everyman badge requires you clear the Unholy Cathedral! I don't have much of a choice!

That said, the resistance bonuses berserk gives + red armour translates to ~1-3 damage/hit, so melle isn't actually that painful, and because one's health is so low, getting sneezed at triggers berserk, greatly improving one's survivability!

uhh, not much to say about this run. The onyx mod was nice. I should've used the nano mod to make blue power armour. Got around chained court by blowing holes in the bunker and running straight at the Barons. It worked well.

Heresy!

Console + keyboard + vi-keys forever!

But that said, nice win.  Speedrunning DoomRL ought to make an appearance on SRL or SDA, but naaah, they don't like rogue-likes.  =(
What exactly are vi keys?

Although, admittedly, I have never seen you before, it's good to see you've come back! Personally I have only started since the release of the first graphics version (0996), but I take it much will have changed for a player like yourself. Dig in, I'd say, there's probably a lot more waiting to be discovered.

Very good run, too, you went very well-armed if speedrunning was your goal :)
How many Doomguys did it take you to achieve this? I see you've left out the last paragraph of your mortem...
Approx five for this particular run; took me about an hour total (including Life Stuff). Plus a couple of suicides on level1, probably; I tend to beat myself up if I take unnecessary damage there. Still trying to figure out how to get past those first two N! former humans consistently without damage (you can't scout 'em. Can't spam 10mm ammo to find em. Probably need to use the "edge of your vision" effect(?) to initially detect em, then pull em to some cover?

But yeah, nice to be be back; thanks!

Right-click to shoot. Should eliminate misclicks. I, too, came back after having played a few years ago (your mention of aggressive tactics brought back memories!), and wierdly I quickly found graphics + mouse a better way of playing... Even for speedruns. :)
Wow. That'll make things way faster. Thanks!  As a roguelike purist, the fact that I *like* tiles makes me feel dirty :S

e: oh my god, I'm playing primarily with my mouse now

I feel unclean

ee: oh my god, rightclick also reloads. I have a new jesus.

Played DoomRL back when assemblies/uniques weren't A Thing, and you could switch between Cowardly, Cautious, Agressive modes. Finally decided it was time to pick it back up, and was bashing my head against Nightmare! runs. OCD tendencies meant I *had* to kill every enemy in doorways/barrel 'em, game became miserable fast.

Decided to change things up a bit, and man oh man. Speedruns are intense! Fast! Surprisingly not rage-inducing! Good challenge, good badge.

Still have plenty of room to improve, in terms of time and technique; often cleared areas that could be skipped (was anxious about exp, but all you really need is berserker), and once I *got* berserker, for some reason my play transitioned from ::: constantly shotgun scouting ::: to ::: BASH THE HELL BARON'S FACE BLOOD! BLOOD!!! BLOOD!!!! :::

Suffice to say, those runs ended in, uh, failure.

Couple things to note about the drops. Double-double shotgun was nice. Really nice. Took some extra (real-time) time to pull off, but shoot -> equip -> shoot is way faster than shoot -> reload -> shoot (1.5s faster!). Helped me out in a couple tight spots.

Didn't use the rocket launcher at all. Never occurred to me. Had to play fast. Incorporating rocket jumps is probably integral to faster times, however, so I should probably start practicing that.

The point in ironman was a misclick. Oops.

Finally, might make a macro that, when I press "t", it automatically fires in the last direction I moved. Not sure if that would be cheating for a speedrun, but I radar shoot a lot, and doing it with a keyboard is pretty damn slow for me. Doing it with the mouse was faster, but sometimes I'd misclick, and move instead of shooting, leading to much pain. Also, my (non-radar shooting) gameplay tends to be much faster and enjoyable on numpad, so that'd be another reason for the shortcut.

I love wizkid. 3 mods to a regular weapon generally is all the mods that I need anyways, giving me a rocket launcher with 3 reload before the wall (if I'm lucky) and a chaingun with 3 speed. Good fun.

Before him 40 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 39 of those were killed.
1 of those was killed by something unknown.

My first regular game on medium rather than hard, and I win it, go figure. I actually nearly ran out of ammo for all my weapons (didn't have plasma then) during the halls of carnage, and I ended up launching my last rocket at a demon while running for the exit (I had mentally blocked out all the shotguns and shotgun shells, because I NEVER have picked up a shotgun past level 1). Also fought the mortuary for the first time, which was fun and taught me the importance of energy cells.

This game is actually a lot more fun to play on medium than hard, simply because you don't fight solely hell barons and arch-viles 3/4 of the way through. That being said, I never used an ironman/TaN combo before, as I always prefered dealing damage. I usually relied solely on rockets late in hard games, as I take way too much damage with the lesser weapons. I've also never abused intuition, although I think I might try it out on my first Ultra-Violet attempt.

Discussion / Re: Request for Help -- Monster danger levels
« on: December 08, 2007, 19:21 »
Generally, monsters like former fhumans, regular demons, souls, captains, and sergants do not pose any threat whatsoever after the chaingun. The only time demons or imps can be dangerous is when they're paired with a hell knights or above, but it usually doesn't matter. Otherwise I haven't really fought enough to be able to rate them effectively.

On an unrelated note:
Hell knights and hell barons sometimes are completely harmless if you're lucky, as they'll simply move while you pund them full of bullets. You might want to consider changing that.
